personally i think the papal states are an important country to talk about as the catholic church has shaped history and their power was based in the papal states.

PS...I don't know why Ceylon was included. The territory of Sri Lanka is identical to that of Ceylon and the island was not included in the British Empire of India. The island simply changed its name. Other disappeared countries would include: Texas, Hawaii, Sarawak, The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Scotland & Wales as indep countries, St Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, Newfoundland, Cyprus (de facto), Palestine, and inumerable African kingdoms and states. I am just touching the surface here.

    • @jimb9063

      Yes fair points.
There's some ambiguity around the word country I guess. By countries these days, most people probably mean Nation States, which are reasonably recent.
As you say there's plenty of historical states or kingdoms that have existed, and also a few empires, if the duel monarchy of Austria Hungary counts too.

I think one interesting country for me is Imperial Abyssinia which existed from 1270 until the 1974 coup d'etat of Emperor Haile Selassie of the Solomonic dynasty by the Derg. Nowadays it's split into two countries, Ethiopia and Eritrea. It's wild for me to think that if the emperor wasn't overthrown, we would have a modern-day ancient Empire and dynasty still alive and ruling in Africa.

Hey, dumb video idea.. i love RTS games. This includes Age of Empires 4! It would be interesting to see a history teachers take on the technology paths on each of the Empires and if their play styles actually correlate with their historical culture. Examples would be how the French Empire is a Calvary driven powerhouse and the English are agrarian and defensive with the longbow keeping enemies at bay.

Regarding the RSI, commonly referred as republic of Salò: when the allied invaded Italy king Victor Emmanuel III immediately surrendered, arrested Mussolini and joined the allies, at this point Germany invaded from the north busted Mussolini out of jail and put him in charge of the RSI. And while it is true that it was essentially run by the germans, the majority of man power was still provided by italian fascists. Sayng that there were only german soldiers is a lie that serves to hide the crimes committed by the italian fascists there.

I like the history from Neutral Moresnet, the only country/free state which almost used Esperanto as official language. Actually it wasn't a real country with a head of state, but a condominium. The difference in law made many people from all over Europe visit or move there and many of them were refugees and later artists. They disturbed the surrounding countries also with the gambling, smuggling and being a tax paradise. In typical European style: the borders weren't realistic and often went through existing homes which made the whole situation very difficult after the declaration. A very rich, century long history (1816-1920) on a very eventful border (Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium). Philatelists all over the world search for the post stamps of Neutral Moresnet, only made in 1897. Having a law based on the code Napoleon made that the surrounding countries evolved in modern societies, while many rights stayed unchanged in Neutral Moresnet (child labor, voting rights, education, ...) Germany complained about this mishaps in 1902.
The name of Neutral Moresnet in Esperanto is 'Amikejo' and means place of friendship.
In 1914 took it the Germans only half an hour to capture Moresnet. They didn't have an army, and many inhabitants spoke German so almost nothing got damaged, until 1918 when the Germans lost ground (and eventually the war).
In 1820 the borders of Moresnet got deforested, so from above you can still see the borders because of the different growth of nature.
The last person born in Neutral Moresnet died in 2020, 105 years old.

    interesting bit of info.
    for example-
-France abolished slavery on its soil in the 1300s, except for the southern port cities, it banned slavery in colonies in 1794 just to reinstate it in 1802
-England abolished slavery on its soil in 1102, maybe 1215 for a more written law, but a lot of people say its 1066 when William 1st banned slavery, but he actually only banned the trade out of England.
-Haiti (a lot of people point to) "abolished" slavery during their independence in 1804, but they then invaded and enslaved the Dominicans in 1822 until 1842.
and its the same for Vermont too, it abolished slavery but only for children, and they had to reach 21 for males or 18 for females, and it was never properly enforced.
history gets both, boring, interesting, and sometimes spoiled when you start looking at the finer details of the events.

Eh, I wouldn’t say Austria-Hungary was to blame for World War 1.
If anything, their dissolution in the manner that it was, planted the seeds for World War 2 (partially) and the later ethnic conflicts in the Balkans.
It was Serbian ambition and fears of Austria-Hungary’s possible future success that stirred things up before World War 1.
Not saying it was a perfect state (especially with how Hungary was ironically what dragged it down in some ways due to their magyarization and other supremacist policies). However, the successor states each proved less successful in many ways.
It’s also worth noting that the treaty of Trianon was authored by the French as well…. You know, the ones who authored the asinine terms that were present in the treaty of Versailles.
