    This little tool is easy to make and works extremely well. If you want to make perfect dados on the tablesaw then a simple kerfmaker is the way to go. You can certainly make a much nicer looking one but if you're not worried about aesthetics (not that this one looks bad but there are some very nice looking ones around) then this one is perfectly functional and is very easy to make.
    As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

    RUclips suggests videos based on the types of videos watched. So I wasn't surprised when RUclips suggested I watch some other kerf maker videos.
    I have to say cobber, "Your kerfmaker video is hands-down THE-BEST-VIDEO-OUT THERE I HAVE SEEN SO FAR! BAR NONE!" I reiterate, bar none!
    Simple, to the point, and easy to use. Not too simple and not too complex. Spot-freaking-on!

    As of today (May 26, 2020) there are about 790K views and 29K "thumbs up." There should be many, many times that number. I wish more people would simply say "thanks" by clicking the "thumbs up."
    I only recently discovered your channel, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. Your instructions are clear, and your projects are both realistic and useful. This project is a good example. Thanks for all you do.

    I just made this. It works like a beauty! So simple, yet so effective.
    Pro tip, plane down the side that will take the wing-nut, so the top side is just proud of the bottom. This will allow the washer to get a really good squeeze on the top half.

    Thank you for this video. The design is simple, effective, and doable. After blowing up/flinging my first one with a cheap rabbeting bit I made a second try and got a nice one that didn't try to blind or maim me. A couple of tests to dial it in and I am SO pleased with it. I was able to cut 6 long dados with it to build my daughter a bunch of picture frame ledges. Nailed them all on the first try. • @Dingbat217
    @Dingbat217 7 лет назад

    Nice and simple! :-)
    If you don't change the blade that often then you can do away with the adjustment screw at the end of the bottom part, then after you've squared up the two parts make a cut, with the same blade that you are going to use, where the two parts meets up at the other end of the the kerf maker. This cut will need to be deep enough to cut through all pf the top part so that it's now a blade's width shorter than the bottom and you should get a perfect fit without having to adjust anything it.
    When you swap blades, close up the two parts fully, square the ends up and make a new cut along the joint at the top of the kerf maker.

    I am an amateur woodworker, yet I could easily understand how to make the kerfmaker. And guess what, it worked the 1st time. Watched this and then two other 'styles' and this is by far better than the others. They both required another measurement for the blade thickness where your version already determines it with the screw in the end. Additionally, yours allows for a blade change then a small adjustment of the screw to account for the balde and viola... you use it without a single adjustment as long as you use that blade. Superior design sir!

    • @randyhawley7202
      @randyhawley7202 6 лет назад

      Mine don't have an adjusting screw. In order to do that, I have a dedicated kerfmaker for a specific saw blade. Instead of the screw, I had it assembled all tight, with the butt ends cut off even, then ran it across the saw blade so that the kerf it cut separated the end piece from the sliding piece. This makes the sliding piece the perfect length. So quick and easy to make, and it produces amazing results.

    Another way you can do it: take an old saw blade and cut out a little rectangular piece of it. Put this piece up against your fence when you make the first cut, remove the metal piece, replace it with the board that's going into the dado, and make your second cut. If the saw you used to make the rectangle is the same thickness as the saw you're using to make the cut, then it will be exactly as wide as it needs to be. You can even keep drill a hole in them and keep them all on a carabiner, one for each saw kerf. Or if you don't have a spare saw blade to cut up, you can just create a shim out of metal or plastic with the same width as the saw blade.

    Thank you very much for sharing this tip. I’ve been looking for a jig that wasn’t to complicated to make and this is it. I’m a newbie to. The woodworking community but having a blast at 65!!

    Nice, small variation; cut a scrap piece of tongue and groove oak flooring down the middle and fit together so the groove slides in the toung. Complete the rest as shown. I can't work without one of these.

    Thank you. I've made many mistakes on dados over the years -- too tight, too loose. I was thinking about buying the BCTW KM-1 commercial Kerfmaker, but (a) it's out of stock at Amazon; and (b) more than $50 when they DID have it. It's $61 direct from BCTW. The KM-2 is even pricier. I don't believe they're worth it, no matter how well made.
    Your little DIY kerfmaker works just as well, and it was FREE -- I already had all the stuff I needed to construct one. Works like a champ.
    One possible improvement: Use a wood-screw with very fine threads for the kerf-adjustment -- easier to make very fine, precise adjustments.
