I had always wondered how Gantz's backgrounds had such high resolution in so little time.
This explains everything.
lmao
true
Yes that is correct.
The Mangaka used 3D models + images + hand drawing for his manga.
His style is so realistic and he have a week to produce a chapter so he have to use computer for his backgrounds.
In Berserk the Mangaka takes months or even more than a year to produce a chapter because he draw everything by hand.
Unlike in One piece or Naruto or Bleach ...., most of the time left the Background blank. Or less detailed.
Inio Asano os Oyasumi PunPun does this aswell
gantz came out in the 90s this software was not there then
I think it's okay as long as the picture is royalty free / no copyrighted. Or even better, it's your own photos. I mean if you draw background especially detailed ones from scratches, you ended up feeling burnt out.
This is so true, I'm pretty good at my character sketches but the environment takes a month out of my life span lol.
imagine making manga background back in the day man...
Yeah! But i think i will make my own 3D background, i'll try make them on Blender, and make it as a image. I would like to make 3Ds & for my own manga background (without taking from others picture) 😍
HIGHLY UNDERRATED VIDEO AND TUTORIAL!!!!!!
@Minhothekiller121 what the fk are u saying
I am aspiring to be a mangaka and am actually really bad at drawing architecture and environment this is a live saver thanks bud
Hey, I didnt know this is what lots of people do to make manga. Being honest, it always striked me how they were able to make this kind of so smooth drawings about cities and objects, and I also assumed they were just really really good at drawing.
Thank you for this knowledge my friend. If, my first short manga this year, I'd like to show it to you..
Thank you again for this.
Most people do just draw their backgrounds themselves, they usually just use reference pictures. I wouldn't recommend doing this if someone were actually publishing something, because if someone notices it's just a picture snatched from somewhere, people would be upset
@MiniMight if he just a beginner using it to start out I don’t any people would care, but he should deffo learning his to draw well
@@MiniMight True, and it isn't so much that they are bothered by it, but once you start making a lot of money then everyone is going to be scrambling for excuses to steal that money from you.
This will be a game changer for me, Thank you soooo much
I read punpun by inio asano and I was so amazed by how he made those backgrounds 👀
those are photos backrounds
Honestly, with all the techs, I would be surprised if this isn’t the norm.. Such a time and energy saver.
thank you so much! i was struggling with making backgrounds for a manga I'm making for my friend and this really helps!
Hey, this is a pretty good tutorial, thank you! One thing I can add is you make a lot of decisions about the contrast and white balance of the image only during the filter pass stage, perhaps doing standard Photoshop adjustments with curves and levels after you've applied the filters would be a more flexible approach.
Oh yes totally! Great idea
i am a hero is the first manga i read and i believed he used the technique of taking photos and turning them into backgrounds. i think he did a couple of pages at the end of the manga of him taking photos all over tokyo for the backgrounds.
and i am postive sui ishida did the same bc one panel of an alleyway book store is almost identical to one i found irl on good maps XD.
The plane one was amazing, it could pass as a drawing at first glance
exactly what i was looking for. thanks a lot
really great vid thanks for sharing this valuable infos
this was really helpful, thank you for uploading !!!!
This video was worth every second! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much for sharing these tips! Definitely useful! ☺
Your welcome :)
You, Sir, are amazing.
Thank you.
I always thought Japanese mangakas were fucking monsters for drawing backgrounds in manga so dam fast but, this explains a lot
There are some who don't use this technique and still a monster haha. But those are usually 90's old mangakas.
Thank you. I will do it for my manga.
omg thank uuu i’ve always wanted to make backgrounds like oyasumi punpun
Your welcome
THANK YOUU SO MUCHH > < glad to find this video ♡
thanks man this is really helpful for my projject
I love manga, thank you so much
Hm. But what happens if you need the same background just from a different perspective? I don't think you can find that easily free bg of the same pic from different angles. And taking photos of special bg (like 11. Century or fantasy bg) are almost impossible let alone talking about different perspectives.
So this is kinda useful if you just use one bg of one perspective with zooming or make the photos of the place yourself. Otherwise I guess it's the old classical way to draw them yourself.
Still thanx for sharing. It is an interesting method.
Yes, or if you live there, you plan ahead and go for a walk and take heaps of photos and use the ones you like best. So, you have your own camera decision involved as well.
@@warrenography Yeah. But too bad that can't be used for my ideas.

Great video!! this really helps a lot ,but I was wondering about adding color to the backgrounds and if it works with this style of editing?
Thanks, definitely trying this !!!!
Wich version of Photoshop are you using? I cant reproduce the results in PS6
Great tutorial man!!!
what version of photoshop is it? I use the 2023 one and I don't get the poster edge option :( please help
Time saving video bhai... helpful..😍
No way! Aweasome!
Self opinion, but this is cheating.. however, I know, because sometimes for big shots I use it too, you gotta do it. I could make it from imagination, BUT, the time is ticking. For all of you "bother" by this, just don't. You're the creator of your work, and everything you put in came from your mind. Also, if you know you can do it without copying, why are you bother by it in the first place? (I know that feeling, just step up and ignore it)
Cheers my fellow artists brothers!
Once you start doing art professionally that feeling will slowly go away. Because as I've said "Clients don't care about the process". They need the final result to look good. And ofcourse if it's your personal work then you can draw everything yourself no one is stopping you. And I still prefer guys who can draw all of these all by themselves before using this technique because then you won't feel bad about it much cause you know you can do it even without it ;). And it's not really cheating. All of the game concept art you see are mostly photobashed. All of the Concept Art for last of us are done the same way. Then there's matte painting. Even using photos correctly requires skill :). Even I'm not great at that. But yea first learn to draw everything yourself then use these techniques when you're in a deadline. Don't rely on this technique if you can't draw because then the background will look amazing and suddenly your own character in that background won't match the skill level xD so it will look out of place. Hope this helps :)
This is life saving for someone like me who is drowning in manga commissions 😭
Thanks for tutorial. Can you please say what the version of Photoshop at this video?
I was using the 2016 Portable Photoshop. It's a smaller version of photoshop where you can't use the plugins, It's faster than normal photoshop as well.
Thank you!
Where is the software used mentioned ? That should be in the title.....
Could you do one for clip studio please if you haven’t yet
You saved my life fr fr
when I tried adding the halftone filter the image went blank.
same here😩
Reset the Foreground and Background Colors (D).
@@furkanblvck HOw?
thank you
This is amazing. Thank you!
What art program is that? does it cost money?
Terrific.
Hello, every time I add the halftone filter my image becomes purple and orange; do you know why or how I can turn it off?
no wonder it look so real.......
what photoshop version?
Thanks man it really helps
Bro that's awesome btw r u from India?
yep
thank you for this
Hey! Quick question,
when I activate the halftone filter, the image becomes blank white. Would you happen to know why this is happening?
imgur.com/gallery/o4Pslea
Any help is deeply appreciated! Thank you so much!
Change your background colour. I mean when u choose colour u have 2 colours right? One primary colour and one secondary which is below to the primary. Change the secondary to grey or black. And try again.
For me when i apply the halftone filter it becomes blue even though my background color is white
@@omarlachgar9775 OH I found it out!! You have to set your primary and secondary colors to black and white! You know the two squares buy the color wheel? Change one to black, and one to white
@@dicedip7431 yes exactly
when i go step making halftones, my images become all black. what should i do?
this is so cool
Thnks bhai
i'm really thankful
Thanks for the tutorial! Just one question. Is it plagiarism if I use pictures from google?
If you're using images from Google especially images which are taken by other photographers then yes it's plagiarism. That's why I said to take your own photos or you can search "Royality Free Images" on google. There are alot of great images which is royality free. So make sure you're not using someone's else's work. Either take your own pictures or use free images then that way you won't be in any trouble.
@@Grisha786 you can take free copyright image on website like Unsplash etc..., that's where i go when i need picture for my work.
another thing you could do is use google earth or something similar and with the street veiw option and take screenshots from real places around the world
ty man, ty !!!!!!!
Thanks a lot!!
Now how do I not get sued😅
Jokes aside, what are good sites for copyright free stuff?
Can one use Google Earth?
Also I heard that some architects copyrighted designs of buildings...
best
❤❤❤
Thanks a lot
can I make my own version of backgrounds I don't understand?
Sure, but this is just showing how to edit an image to make a manga background. You can still draw it but it will take longer and won’t be as realistic
Which software and device laptop or computer you're using?
Thanks bro
more like cheat codes
What add did you use?
Photoshop
nice
What the app name
What if I want it colored tho
is there away to do this on krita?
Bro how did u paste it
Is this also possible for clip studio?
Clip already has its own manga shader settings. Those are better than Photoshop
Himesh Anand hey, I just downloaded clip studio paint ex. do you know where these shader settings are located? thanks
@@vikpere8129 on right side above layers . There are small icons with halftones, blue box icon etc. Try the halftone one.
Whats the app?
It's not an app, it's a pc program it's called Photoshop (i'm sure you've heard of it before)
well cheating is very unprofessional to stay beautiful tutorial had a lot of fun hope see more from you .
it doesn't work for me well :((((((((((((((((((((((
Why does this feel to me that it degrades mangaka's work? Probably because this is easier and takes little time compared to the hard work of detailed drawing. So, if a mangaka drew with such detail I would impressed because of the hard dedication and work but the photoshop option is much easier so I cannot be impressed.
This doesn't degrade anything, what are you talking about lol. It's just another way to make bgs for manga.
Which version of Photoshop is this?
Photoshop CC 2016 Lite Version
@@HimeshAnand thank you !
@@HimeshAnand
@@HimeshAnand Is it done in all versions of photoshop
