They booked professional studio time to record this song and shoot the video, but the booking fell thru at the last minute. So instead, they recorded the audio in a bedroom closet and shot the video in Avi & Kevin's kitchen, all on an iPad, with a production budget of $400 (not counting post-production and editing costs). The result? Their first video to go super-viral worldwide, their first international hit, their first Grammy, and being promoted by Sony from the small Madison Gate label all the way up to RCA!
@@TheCurtisMagicUncleGijShow There is also a live private performance they did for someone in a little kitchen (I think), no mics, nothing but them - its also online, the only major discernable difference is the quality of recording, and the "crisp studio" effect
First of all best reaction ever to this Grammy award winning performance by Pentatonix in my opinion. Secondly, Its Avi (pronounced Awe Vee) Kaplan and he was an original member of the 5 . He is the basso profundo and my all time favorite. He also majored in Opera. He left the band amicably in 2017 as was eventually replaced by Matt Sallee. Kevin Olusola (beat boxer) and Avi were roommates. The other 3 Scott Hoying (blonde baritone), Kirstin Maldonado (mezzo soprano) and Mitch Grassi (crazy good counter tenor) grew up together in Texas. I think its best to watch earlier performances first so you get to know the band members and you can see the progression. This band has 3 Grammy awards form the earlier years with Avi. These 5 are musical geniuses and the story of how they came to be is crazy. Destiny....? Sure seems to be. I hope you will continue this journey. Please react to Hallelujah. The video has over 615 million views and they also have a live performance(will shake you as well) from their Christmas Special 2016. Other great earlier performances are Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody, Rather Be, Say Something, Love Again(original written by Avi and Kevin), Misbehavin has several live performances and is an original written by Scott Hoying. The PTX fans are the best and will support you on your journey. Thanks again for the ride!!!:)
YES! Then you can experience them raw sooooooooo good. There is also an official video and live versions of Hallelujah that are worth comparing the live is from their Christmas special and the audio quality is great.
Pentatonix and Ben Bram (their arranger) are redefining A Capella as a whole. Avi and Ben created an A Capella Academy for teens and Scott and Ben produce Acapop! KIDS (that features younger kids) that embodies this new style! I can't wait for the new generation to bring some great new music to this scene.
Kevin also is involved with music with kids but on the classical side of things (he is also a cellist). He hosted a miniseries where he features rising young classical artists and later jams with them a bit (beatbox and or cello). The whole group is inspirational.
They recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary so there is lots to chose from. A few suggestions: Originals: Run To You Love Again Rose Gold Water A Light In The Hallway Standing By Sing Covers: Bohemian Rhapsody (Queen cover) Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Imagine (John Lennon cover) Can't Hold Us (Macklemore & Lewis cover) Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy (Tchaikovsky cover) No (Meghan Trainor cover) Gold (Kiiara cover) Problem (Ariana Grande cover) Say Something (A Great Big World cover) Radioactive (Imagine Dragons cover) The Sound Of Silence (Simon & Garfunkel cover) Can You Feel The Love Tonight (Elton John cover) New Rules/Are You That Somebody (Dua Lipa & Timbaland cover) Havana (Cabello cover) Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone (Newton & Tomlin cover) Christmas: Mary, Did You Know Little Drummer Boy God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen Oh Come All Ye Faithful The First Noel If you finish all those, literally anything else they have done is good. Do check out their solo projects. They are awesome. Do check out Home Free and VoicePlay.
The Sing-off episodes might be worth a watch. An Amazing Grace/Hallelujah two punch might be in order. Those are two of their most beloved songs. Also Sound of Silence, Can you feel the Love tonight, and a whole bunch more. Also, if you want to see one that's just instrumental, they won a Grammy for The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy
Glad that you are starting down the PTX rabbit hole! Love for you to see the breath of their older music to see their journey, hope you look at their originals and even solo work. Kevin’s cover of down or Mitch’s cover of Your Power are just two songs that show the talent of their arraigning abilities, that they do play instruments (very limited within PTX world) and vocal skills.
This won them their first Grammy, their second was for their Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy which has no words and Jolene which they sang with Dolly Parton and was the first Grammy ever won for that song. Highly recommend both! If you want to see a great cover of theirs about unity and love, check out their cover of Imagine. Thanks for this wonderful reaction friends!
This was a great way to start the day! So glad you reacted to this one - the arrangement won them their first Grammy. It was recorded in a bedroom closet and filmed in the kitchen, believe it or not. They are a bottomless well of talent and genius. I subscribed after your first reaction yesterday - looking forward to more PTX. They've been prolific, so lots to choose from, but I think you would really enjoy their "Evolution of . . . " medleys, which are live, one-take performances.
Thanks for the great reaction. I love the way you go through the history of "a Capella". You are right. There is before PTX and after PTX. They changed the whole genre (with help from "Glee" and the "Pitch Perfect" series). The make-up of the group only changed once. Avi (Bass) left in 2017 and was replaced by Matt. The other 4 members are the original. Please continue on your journey with Pentatonix. Thanks again.
You can find live versions of this song, which will give you an idea of how much after-processing actually happens. The finishing arranger up until this day continues to be Ben Bram, who shared their Grammy awards with them, but Pentatonix starts the arrangement themselves. You can find a video interview with Kevin Olusola (beatboxer) where he discusses how they build an arrangement. Also, there is a new interview (April 2021) with Ben Bram out there that gives some history as well. A favorite song of mine that showcases the versatility of the members is La La Latch. You mentioned The Weeknd - Pentatonix recently covered Blinding Lights, and it is fantastic. For other groups, Home Free was mentioned last time - this time I'll mention VoicePlay. This was another great discussion, you two.
Once again you came through with a great reaction! Thanks so much! One of the great things about Pentatonix' covers is that they introduce the listener to genres of music or artists that the listener may never have thought to hear. I know this to be true in my case. Although, I have to say that in most cases I think PTX sounds better than the original. JMO. If you want to hear a masterpiece cover listen to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. They didn't cover it for many years because they felt they could not do it justice. I know, so many reactors, when they are asked to react to it, say that there is no way ANYONE can do it justice, but then are blown away when they hear it. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed. Thanks again for a great and and informed reaction. I look forward to them!
Daft punk and Love Again are my 2 favorites. These guys did this in a closet with ring lights and makeup. It cost them $400. No manager, producers etc.. Self made and got several Grammy's for it.
From a theatricality perspective probably their two best videos are there cover of Papaoutai and a collaboration they did with Todrick Hall called the Wizard of Ahhhs. Both highly recommended.
I think it'd be interesting for you to react to their original "Run to You" which is a traditional 5 part harmony with no beatboxing or vocal instrumental tricks. You talk about how they rewrote the rules of a capella - true! - but do you still feel the innovation and next-level-ness of the group if they even the playing field with a traditional approach? I do. And it's a beautiful song.
Awesome reaction! I could tell how much you were getting into it. I would love to see you react to their live performance of hallelujah from their Christmas show. It really shows off how little difference there is when they preform live. Can't wait to see more!
Dudes! Their covers of Havana and Radioactive will flooryou and introduce you to Matt, their new Bass, who brings so much to the mix. His range is astounding. I discovered them on the sing off too. Dig Kevin's air-flugelhorn.
You should react to the off mic version of this, it is a private performance in their ready room right before one of their concerts. You can tell they aren't quite fully warmed up and are holding back a little bit since they are about to perform at their concert, but it is still amazing. ruclips.net/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/видео.html
Great recommendation - I was going to suggest the same thing! I don't think it fully sinks in mentally exactly how unprocessed the music is until you see them off mic! 😂
Only one change in the lineup.... Avi Kaplan was an original and left in 2017. Matt replaced him after that. Otherwise it's the same lineup. I believe this was made in a members closet and cost roughly $450 to make.
No one ever mentions how the name of the Grammy was changed in 2015 to Best Arrangement, Instrumental *Or A Capella* specifically so they could get the nod 😏

1st Grammy for this; cost 400 dollars and made in Avi's Closet and Kevin's kitchen! Try "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "Hallelujah" both masterpieces. Loved the reaction guys!
I hope you check out a version of this that they did that they performed in a dressing room without any mikes. You will find out that there is very little "post production" work to get the sound you heard in this video!
Try a RUclips search on "Pentatonix daft punk private performance." What you'll find is a live performance with no microphones but also no crowd noise, shot on someone's phone. Listen to that, and then tell me again about all the things (other than visuals) that Pentatonix must have done in post-production.
Here's a great one-off a capella song to react to: Sacramento State Jazz Singers "All Along The Watchtower". HINT: this was arranged while the Battlestar Galactica reboot was in production.
Yeah.. no vocal effects on this. They have a couple of live versions out there which show how the sound so robotic with no effects. Check out their original "Love Again". It has similar style to Daft Punk and very theatrical. By the way, I really like your reviews. Very thoughtful. Welcome to the Pentaholics!

there may indeed have been some post production work on this as you mentioned but you could always watch their private performance of this medley without mics obviously a bit quieter than this version but shows their amazing talent to perfection if you want to check it out here is the link. ruclips.net/video/tw4YCsHXKgI/видео.html

Avi and Kevin are in a realm all their own. Amazing!!
Truth!!!
PTX is the gold standard, for sure.
They made this video in Kevin & Avi's closet for an insanely small amount of money, and won their first Grammy for this!!!
🤯🤯🤯
For the theatrical experience, watch Pentatonix' My Favorite Things, excellent.
👍🏾
Absolutely a must as well as Can't Hold Us, La La Latch, New Rules/Are You That Somebody mash-up and Havana!
