I made this tiny mortise chisel

  • Most mortise chisels are huge chunky pieces of steel associated with carpentry and heavy duty chopping. But sometimes, it is good to have a very small one - for example when making wooden planes.
    In fact I needed a narrow but stiff chisel for a different project I was working on. So I took a cutoff of 1095 steel and a piece of ash from the fire wood pile and went for it. Since it is so small but still needs to be able to take some hammer blows, I decided to make a ferrule on both sides of the handle from a length of brass tubing that I had lying around.
    In the end I am using the chisel to chop a mortise behind a piece of plexiglass. This demonstration is an imitation of a great video by @Paul.Sellers that you should watch, if you haven't yet.

    You know what mate? You're inspirational. I never ever thought of making my own chisels, and I would like a set of mortising chisels, at least in a few sizes. Now I know I can do it myself. BTW, I love your humour. Have a great week ahead, LG

    Одна и та же ошибка на нескольких работах: насаживает рабочую часть инструмента в слишком маленькое отверстие, деревянная ручка лопается. Лайк, тем не менее, молодец ! ))))

    Hello, nice realisation🤗. Sorry but I desagree : if you look at mortice chisel the faces are not parallele, there is a light bevel, it's made to help the cut.👌👍🖖

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  3 года назад +1

      Yes, that is true. But I use it mainly to shape the cavities of wooden planes and for that, I find it helpful to have square edges.

    • @fork4587
      @fork4587 3 года назад +1

      True for a lot of chisels. I think Rob Cosman said he advised lie nielsen to not have the bevels on their mortise chisels, and his own line woodrivers also have parallel sides.

    As always a fun enjoyable watch. One question, what is the name of that bench top(?) lathe you use? I'm working in a tight space would be interested. Thanks in advance!

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  3 года назад

      Hey, glad you enjoyed it. I’m not sure what brand the lathe is. But I also can’t recommend this design very much. It is almost impossible to align properly. There are other hand drill lathes where everything is at least mounted to some sort of rail.

      I've seen a good benchtop one made by AEG - mine is quite old though so look second hand

    I love mortising chisels, but they are hard to get and pricy in Europe. Don't know why. I have some questions. When you heated the steal, was that a brick underneath ?. Would any brick do ?. Did you use a blowtorch to heat it up ?. Great video, i would never have thought about making my on chisels. Mystery solved, thank you So much

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  3 года назад +2

      Yes, I use a simple blow torch on a gas can. The bricks are there to concentrate the heat on the steel and stop some of it from escaping. I use chamotte-type fire bricks, but I guess normal bricks would also work.

    • @TheHibener
      @TheHibener 3 года назад +1

      @@imadethischannel thank you so much for your answer. I feel more confident doing this myself. Chamott is a good choice, they are made for ovens 😀

    Bom Dia, pode passar as medidas que usou neste projeto?

    • @imadethischannel
      @imadethischannel  2 года назад +1

      Hey, most of the dimensions are pretty arbitrary and depend on the material you have. The most important thing is the bevel angle. It should be between 25 and 30 degrees.
