Why Seroquel Is SO Much More Than A Sleep Aide

- Is Seroquel (quetiapine) really just a sleeping pill? This presentation, a coda to my recent "Insomnia Armamentarium" video, answers the question, "Is Seroquel an acceptable sleeping pill?" Quetiapine as a hypnotic agent is in widespread use, but is it really safe and well-tolerated?
I use this question as a springboard to present, in the usual 20 minutes, a comprehensive overview of the second-generation atypical antipsychotic/mood stabilizer, with a scope and format appropriate for the layperson and student/trainee alike.
If you are more interested in knowing if you should be taking quetiapine for sleep, check out the 8-minute excerpt, "Quetiapine Hour: Is Seroquel for Sleep Worth It?"
Thanks for posting. Hope you had a good thanksgiving.
Happy Holidays!
I think the problem is they created the small dose pills to aid in titrating up to the effective dose and thereby avoid EPS. Someone realized 25mg makes you tired.
Seroquel has an extremely low incidence of EPS even at the highest doses, though, and although the severity of EPS is dose-dependent, titrating it slowly won’t necessarily avoid it once you reach the threshold for it (with the possible exception of avoiding an acute dystonic reaction, but that’s really more a danger with the high-potency agents delivered intramuscularly) It’s probably more a matter of avoiding orthostatic hypotension, falls and the sedation itself, ironically. Thanks for watching!
