- Hello Friends! Enough people asked for a bandana making tutorial that i thought i would just pop this up here for you all. I discuss pulling of threads in linen and also show you the baby rolled hem foot and how i manage that process as well! I do hope you enjoy!

I appreciate the struggle of thread pulling
I had a job which included hemming linen squares for liturgical use. We would chain hem one side of 20 or so pieces, then flip the chain & hem the opposite sides. Then we cut the squares apart & did the same to the other two opposite sides. Linen is very obedient, so even though the squares were torn, it was easy to finger press a tiny rolled hem, & stitch it with an industrial straight stitch machine. The alloted time was 3 minutes for each completed square, & I liked doing them because it was something that could be finished accurately in the time limit. So satisfying!
I don't really sew stuff (but I want to start to) yet I absorb a lot of knowledge from you and from other costubers. Pulling the thread is one thing that sticked in my head and I got to use it recently. It felt so great to have the straight clean line to cut along and not get a messy edge. I am deep in the babywearing rabbit hole and of course, the wraps/slings are beautiful fabric also used for scraps and sewing and other crafts. I got to divide one long one into three scraps, so pulling the thread it was and my brain was very happy about it. Also, cutting into the wrap fabric for the first time flipped some switch in my head and suddenly the idea of cutting and sewing wrap fabric doesn't look so scary. Most of my precious wraps are now in danger of being turned into skirts and other wearables :)))

I made several bandanas for my son out of cotton flannel. I ironed over an edge as small as I could and then ironed it over again, then sewed the seam. I am very envious of your rolled hem foot. It's so much faster.

It makes sense to me that the weft pulls easier than the warp, the process of weaving makes a clean shed for each weft pass, and the warp threads have a slightly wavy path as they get raised and lowered… so at some point, the weft had to be pulled through that channel, smoothing any of its fluff into line, where any place on the warp threads where there is a stray fiber, it will be pulled at right angles into the path of the weft thread…

No bandanas, but on my last project I decided to level up and do a rolled hem by hand. Turns out I didn’t roll it enough and after the first wash a bunch of the raw edge poked through, so I had to go through and roll it again. It’s all a learning experience!
Thanks for the tutorial on rolled hem feet, I have a handful of those that came with my hand crank machine and I need to learn how to use them!
The first time I attempted to pull threads was on a piece of rough linen that was a duvet cover with a lot of sun damage. The threads were so weak and broke every few inches. I ended up cutting up to the break, find the thread, and work about an inch at a time. It was about 3'. My back was screaming at me by the end. The second time was basic kona cotton and 1000x easier. I used my big gingher scissors and the cut was so not straight. So now I sit better, use my little scissors and take my time. I have to take some deep breaths and just lean into patience. Like hand-sewing a hem. I really should buy a rolled-hem foot, though.
I also love Bernadette. Sometimes I think she's magic.
I've been practicing rolled hems using new fabric I'm ready to wash; two birds, one stone there. That trick with using guide threads is really helpful! I'll have to try that.

Sewing with my rolled hem foot as I watch the video! I have a very similar process and like you, I just make it work for me. It really does wonders for finishing the edges on fussy/shreddy fabrics - like the bridesmaids dress I am hemming right now. After I get this hem done it's on to cutting out pattern pieces for the Coquelicot skirt! Always very exciting when I get a whole day to spend sewing 😁

The closest thing to that type of foot I have is the 1/4 inch quilter's hem foot, which I do want to try as I would like to make a bunch of half-square triangle things for fun (or maybe machine sew the hexagon quilt topper I'm hand sewing for...I dunno....reasons, I guess). I like the idea of the foot, though. Simplifying life is always a good thing as is knowing how to take advantage of the simplifications, so thank you for the suggestions :D I think, should I ever have the chance to get one, I'll feel better using it now ^^

Let me show you the reality of pulling a thread 😂. So true I had a mystery fabric that I did this with and my lord… between the thread breaking and trying to pick it back up with tweezers or a pin and pulling but not pulling to hard…I will say the threads I pulled that did stay together I repurposed as mending threads and did the same when I washed the fabric and it frayed I (like a mad woman) un raveled the ball of frayed threads and wrapped them around a cardboard flat to keep the threads all together. Obviously this was before I lost my sewjo

I got one of those feet and could not work out how to get it started! Just hand turned a whole massive skirt hem in the end, it was less frustrating. I will try this method next time, thanks.
I hate, hate, hate rolled hems, but sometimes they are necessary (light weight silks). I have a rolled hem foot for my machine and I have yet to master it. The hand sewn rolled hem method you shared from another RUclipsr during CoCoVid has worked for me, but takes me forever to do because I have issues with pain in my hands. Next time I need to make one, I'll try the method you show and see if I can get it to work for me. Normally I can start off fine with the machine, but then I mess it up as I go.
Well, I hope it works. It takes a couple tries, but once you figure out your method, it seems pretty good!
I have so little patience for pulling threads that when it breaks I just cut until I find the break....or what might be the break - I'm not super picky 😂 I do need to take the time to figure out my rolled hem foot though.... that's a nice soft goal for myself. I did a reset on my sewing stuff the other day and basically tidied up my scraps. And then I did some more work on my bodice sloper that I've totally been avoiding. I keep having to convince myself that it's worth it and I'll be happy it did it....I'm on the trace of V2 (have to cut and sew it still]

Cutting the line of a pulled thread reminds me of cutting aida cloth.

I have tried to do these kind of hems many times, but not successful.
I am going to try your method with the zigzag stitches first next time.
It also looks like you only have one fold over the foot, I thought it had to be both folds...
Much to learn! Biggest problem is finding the patience.
I found a cheap set of feet on Amazon with the larges foot making a 1/2" rolled hem. But I also have the baby hem foot from the brand of my machine, so plenty of opportunities to experiment.
For sure try the biggest one first and then work your way down!
I've been watching your channel for a long time now, it's funny because I'm from San Jose and went to a high school on Blossom Hill that starts with an O. :) But, I'm in my early 50's so we would mostly likely not have any people in common. Do you have a list of podcasts you are listening to? I'm always looking for new ones to listen while at work. I ordered the first book in the St Marys series, sounds like an interesting read.
I listen to you’re wrong about, if books could kill, maintenance phase, sounds like a cult, and today explained right now. But I’m really picky about my podcasts, so they may be too specific for most people!
@@Costuming_Drama I love the first three, I was sad when Michael Hobbes left You're wrong about, but then we wouldn't have the other two. It took me a minute to listen to Maintenence Phase as diet culture wasn't something I thought I'd be interested in, but it's not what I thought it would be... I don't miss an ep now. If books could kill is even better, I love Peter Shamshiri! I'm not familiar with the other two so I'll give them a listen. I try to listen to history/informative/news stuff in the early morning and progressively get lighter in tone as the day goes on so that by the time I leave work my sanity is still intact. 😆
oh... and my newest binge is a podcast called "too scary, didn't watch" I used to love horror movies when I was a teen and young adult but have liked them less and less as I get older (though I still love a good monster movie.) The premise is three best friends, two are too afraid to watch horror movies and last one loves them, she does a synopsis of the films while they all discuss. It's kind of cute and charming. I'm currently reading The Martian which is better than the movie (of course).
Love a narrow hem foot! If it fubars I just fold it over and straight stitch. I do that sometimes just to make the hem heavier.
