Living in Australia it is nearly impossible to find these works of art for garden projects. For future content it would be great to learn about the different tsukubai water basin styles. I try to use local materials as much as possible but it’s these pieces that really help with making it more authentic.
What a wonderful beginner's introduction to basic Japanese Lantern styles. I would certainly love to see more presentations by Mr. Kitayama. He is very informative and has a ease with the camera. I especially love the transition in the uses of the Japanese Lantern historically. I would have never considered all those aspects without your vlog. Kanpai.

Maybe you can ask about the symbol on the sao of the Oribe lantern, is it Buddha? Also, I have heard that there are Shinto origins for some of the lanterns. Thank you for another great video! p.s. - Similar to this video, a tour of a Japanese nursery stock yard where the gardeners purchase material (matsu, maki, sugi, hinoki) would also be very interesting to see.

11:51 the “Sanko” lantern struck a chord in me. The sun, the moon, and the Stars and how you use this lantern to display light. I had previously watched A RUclips video titled: Why Frank Loyd Wright’s windows look like this. It describes the architects manipulation of natural light be it the sun, the moon, and the stars and how natural light was an obsession to him. It described the relationship between homes and natural light using clerestory windows with patterns. Using light settings in architectural design models on computers you can see the graduation of light over the course of a day in Frank Loyd Wright’s designs. I wonder if the same idea was used in Tokyo’s imperial hotel. (The gardeners There must be amazing people to talk to). His idea that a house should stand as a tree in the midst of nature I find so interestingly relatable to the “Sanko” lantern.

When my daughter and I traveled to and within Japan, we visited several lantern shop display areas. I loved to see the different types they had to show. The many styles would make it both easy and hard to pick just one. Here in our garden on Hawaii Island, we have 5 lanterns, all different. I love them all. Aloha

Very interesting video, my friend! I've always wondered about the different styles of lanterns; please teach us more about garden features like this! I wonder if you can do a video about Suikinkutsu, and interview someone who can speak about the history, because even for Japanese people, they are not very well known. They are very mysterious! I would also like to know where I can see more Suikinkutsu in Kyoto, other than Enkoji, Taizoin, and Eikando. By the way, is this the lantern place/Ishiya -san near Ryoanji? I found it by chance when I was on my Kyoto bicycle temple tour, but there was nobody there to speak to. They have such an amazing collection of lanterns and basins! Keep up the good work, my friend!

There is much speculation about the Buddha-like design on the sao of the Oribe lantern. I'll get back to you on that, Patreon, and explain it to you!

Very interesting video, my friend! I've always wondered about the different styles of lanterns; please teach us more about garden features like this! I wonder if you can do a video about Suikinkutsu, and interview someone who can speak about the history, because even for Japanese people, they are not very well known. They are very mysterious! I would also like to know where I can see more Suikinkutsu in Kyoto, other than Enkoji, Taizoin, and Eikando. By the way, is this the lantern place/Ishiya -san near Ryoanji? I found it by chance when I was on my Kyoto bicycle temple tour, but there was nobody there to speak to. They have such an amazing collection of lanterns and basins! Keep up the good work, my friend!
