  • I made a Hall Table with a hidden drawer as my first attempt at secret compartment furniture.
Imagine what treasures you could hide away in this secret drawer and the surprise on friends faces when it springs open at the press of a concealed button.
I spent hours lying awake at night designing the secret latch mechanism which was the hardest part, but it worked out and the spring loaded concealed drawer is fantastic.
In my previous video I made the Red Cedar Hall Table with intricate Huon Pine inlays in the drawer front.
Table Build Video - • Huon Pine Inlaid Table
The table and drawer build was a marathon 6 weeks over a two month period.
The table is 600mm wide and 420mm deep and 840 high.

This table was a lot of fun to make and very challenging at times.
The design just evolved as the build progressed and the secret drawer kept my friends and workshop visitors intrigued. Let me know what you think below. Sit back and enjoy. James

Aesthetically pleasing but cleverly functional too. You inspire me James to get off my arse and make more stuff.

I like to think someone will reach out with and share a video of a build based on one of my projects. It would quite surreal.
      Do you have a workshop?

@@onehandedmaker Yes James. I work with timber and steel as well. I have designed and built most of our beds and furniture, mostly from Tassie timber as that is where we live.

Ingenious modification of an already impressive project! There must have been some angst when cutting into the original drawer face pattern…

Absolutely questioning will it work. There were no second chances!
I remember lying awake thinking about the design and sketching it up a few times.

Hello from SC, I have enjoyed watching your videos, you sir are a very talented craftsman. I just found your RUclips Channel today, I have subscribed and look forward to the next project. I am also one handed, and would like to see the small details such as connecting the latch spring with one hand. I could gain another one handed persons knowledge-technique, if you will. As you, I have also found that masking tape is your friend as well as small magnets. I work with small coil springs, small spring steel, screws and roll pins, inside firearm receivers of modern and old antiques. I also do stock repair and finish work as a hobby on a small scale. I am not a professional by any stretch just an amateur, novice at best. I am retired and in my very late 60's and still enjoy learning things daily. I have found it to be incredibly helpful, to watch other one handed people working thru the challenges of one handedness to solve problems that would not exist with two hands. The fact that we only have one hand should never limit our abilities to perform difficult but rewarding task. We have to think in different ways, outside the box, inside the box and under the box, and of course, things always take a little longer to complete, at least for me. So I guess what I'm getting at is, please share the challenges and your problem solving solutions so that your one handed viewer's can get different ideas of say, clamping the work down, tools that you use to manipulate small objects, how you safely setup and use power tools and hand tools alike. I have recently found RUclips, a couple years ago now I guess, and it has become another useful tool for me. I am technically challenged, so I'm not sure if I would ever start a channel but it's something I should think about. I look at my one handedness as a small inconvenience and use it as a way to get out of things I don't want to do lol.

      Wow Harrell
Comment of the year from someone who truly understands the situation. Good to hear you repair antique gear and have a passion to make things, its important to be busy mentally and physically. More so if you enjoy what you do,
So good that you found RUclips and thrilled to hear you enjoyed my videos.
I am currently editing a Tambour Door Entertainment Unit video and your request to see more of the "One Handedness" tricks. tips workarounds has certainly influenced the edit. That said, I will make an effort to video more "One Handedness" in my next project, so thanks for the inspiration.
Your comment covers a lot of topics and I am truly flattered by yours and, well most comments to be honest.
Keep in touch with comments and check out a fellow OHM Leo @Hand-i-Craft who puts out some outstanding content.
