    Nice project, I would however make the front slide out like a drawer, that way the bottom shelf can be used like normal.

      A tug on the face would reveal the hidden drawer.

    • @ecospider5
      @ecospider5 4 месяца назад +1

      Drawers are less secret because the whole front would pull forward. So there would be a tiny gap when closed instead of a truly glued front piece.
      Less secret. Easier to access. Tradeoffs

      It would also be harder to use the magnetic trick to hold your candy

    • @SeanBlader
      @SeanBlader 3 месяца назад +1

      @@ecospider5 You could use the same magnets on the back of the drawer face to hold it in and hide the gaps. Also with the slides hidden, you could do identical bits on the top ones as well, and you could have no hinges or holes showing. Since the drawer is pretty thin, you could just grab the whole face to pull it open.

    • @jameshonomichl4816
      @jameshonomichl4816 3 месяца назад +1

      @@SeanBlader I don't think ecospider5 was talking about the little rare earth magnets that keep the door shut. Rather, the "candy magnet" that allows the candy to be stuck up under the top, so that if someone opens the secret compartment, they don't see the "candy". Look at the center section at 23:38

    I really love the secret compartments. My only thought is, if you’re using the shelving for any kind of storage, it might be difficult to pull them down. I’d love to see your take on concealed drawers, that way you don’t have to move storage out if the way for the compartments to open.

    Ingenious. Add some more lights to the upper shelves as 'justification' for them being so thick.
    I have often thought that the kick-space would have some potential for unexpected storage too.

    I built a little back trunk shelf thing for my camping/road trips in my Prius. There was a hidden compartment that you could only see if you put the back seat down. I did this to hide my laptop and more expensive electronics in. I figured that someone might try and break into my car at some point and most camping gear i could replace. But laptops and other devices I didnt want swiped. Its a handy thing to have on weekend trips.

    I can use secret storage over the top of the cabinets, as well as the ones that go underneath the bottom cabinets replacing the dead space behind the toe kick.

    it'd take the Mrs. approximately 7.5 minutes to stuff the bottom shelves with books, clothes, decorative pinecones, a hydraulic press, 3 orphan raccoons and a Boeing 747's landing gear (from under it's left wing) making absolutely sure no uninvited cereal killers would get the well deserved high blood sugar dose on time XD

    • @jameshonomichl4816
      @jameshonomichl4816 3 месяца назад

      @@JamesWelbesSenph42 means that the space *under* the secret door would be filled up. So when you go to access the secret stash, you'd have to get all the crap off the shelf below. If it's a bunch of folded shirts, you scoop them off onto the floor and open the secret door. But if it's a decorative item, you don't want to risk it crashing on the floor and making noise or breaking (glass shards everywhere) or landing on your foot. Basically, the lowest "shelf cavity" (that is the one under the shelf with the secret storage) is effectively unusable. Or at least, needs to be minimally used.

  • @ryanhodges1986

    Its a really cool project. I like the comment someone said about making it a drawer to make the bottom functional as well. I also would have given the top shelf a bottom so that if for some reason someone looked under the shelves they really do look the same and a hidden lock would be better also so that it really is a hidden drawer. All that said this is still very awesome and I love the way you put your videos together!!!

    • @elijahcherweznik3505
      @elijahcherweznik3505 5 месяцев назад +1

      if you did that and wanted to hide the hinge I think you could also add an extra piece of wood to the bottom and instead of having the box in the back you could cut it to an angle to let that extra long bottom pice have a place to hinge. the only issue I see with the adding a base to the top would be that then you wouldn't be able to adjust the height of the shelf.

    • @ryanhodges1986
      @ryanhodges1986 5 месяцев назад +2

      @elijahcherweznik3505 I agree about the ability to move the top shelf... I would probably design it knowing where i wanted the shelves and have both be fixed.
