  • With her huge voice and an assist from talented trombonist Daniel Walter Eaton, Zola Jesus presented a curious combination at the Tiny Desk - a combination I hardly ever encounter. Having seen her mostly with a big and powerful band, I wondered if this configuration would work. But it was magic, with the trombone poignantly complementing her mellifluous voice and stark personal words.
Zola Jesus is the work of Nika Roza Danilova. She has five albums that span and mix electronic music, classical and goth influences. She's always exploring unusual combinations, and this mix of trombone and voice provides just a glimpse into her eclectic explorations. If you find this intriguing and don't know Zola Jesus, you're in for an adventure as you explore her catalog, including her most recent album, Taiga.
    Set List
    "Ego"
    "Hunger"
    "Nail"
    Credits
Producers: Bob Boilen, Maggie Starbard; Audio Engineer: Kevin Wait; Videographers: Colin Marshall, Maggie Starbard; Assistant Producer: Michaela Gugliotta; photo by Colin Marshall/NPR

I love it because her voice still sounds good without any production over it

Beautiful arrangement. Way to go Niki and Daniel! Different but I love the a capella but not variation. Nicely done. . Plus if you've never heard of Zola, definitely check out Taiga and Conatus. Incredible voice, powerful arrangements

Hunger was very enjoyable, she's not terrible and neither is the trombonist. To all the people saying get a guitar in there, go die. Bands like this are inspiring, trying to save brass in modern music.

wow, I like this naked, raw, stripped down sound compared to some of the electronic-heavy sound she puts out on her albums

trombone accompaniment was gutsy and interesting but i agree with Mr. Johnson and others about it not always working.

    Some may say the trombone doesn't work with Zola... Well, if you don't know her enough, then search for her here in youtube. You'll really know what she is into and how she has evolve musicaly through the time. So... Go. Don't stop. C;

I appreciate that they were trying to do something different here, but I really wish that Nika/Zola had brought along a string instrument or two instead. Her Versions album with a string quartet is one of the best albums I've ever heard, imho.

1st time listening to Zola Jesus, great name. I love her deep penetrating voice, I can feel the vibration in my sternum. At some points I feel the selection of a Trombone as an accompanying instrument just did not work. Incredible voice.

To see her live is just...enthralling. She is an amazing performer and one of the best musicians of her time (and she's been putting out records since she was around 17 I think).
When I saw her live the place was PACKED but it was a smaller venue and I was right up front against the stage. When they played Nail she stood on a chair without a microphone and the whole place got silent as she belted out the first verse all by herself. It was chilling.
She also got all wild during her upbeat songs and walked around in the crowd like...singing to people. It was a very powerful experience. I've been to hundreds of concerts and am a musician myself, Zola Jesus really is something special.

She's a talented singer, there just aren't enough sounds to make it interesting; it's like listening to isolated tracks from a full recording. A drummer with a cocktail set might have saved for me.

  • @rbaleksandar

LOL These two are so out of synch. And even if they were the thing the trombone's player tune is different from what the singer follows to say the least. The problem with such wind instrument is that it is a LOT louder than the voice of a person, who's singing next to it. So even if they were in synch and were following some decent tune that fits with them both nicely a trombone is a very weird choice for such a performance.
