    I knew Nika reasonably well during my time in Wisconsin and she is no poseur. She is a genuine fan of noise and avant-garde music and has been for many years (esp. considering her age). She did get the Dr. Who thing wrong, but otherwise thumbs up for her excellent and informed choices.

    Just because she intimidates you doesn't mean she's pretentious, you know...

  • @thaincrediblemaier

    And once again we have all these comments that pick on someone for liking experimental weird shit, calling it pretentious and "trying to hard". Seriously guys, like are you jealous or what's the point? Maybe this woman really appreciates the pioneers of electronic music because she respects them for what they have done? Maybe we wouldn't have her music if we didn't have Luigi Nono in the first place? What is pretentious about thinking outside the box? You don't have to like experimental music or her picks but she seems to have a genuine interest in these things and seems to know stuff. Can't we just accept that musicians are inspired by stuff that isn't necessarily what they end up producing themselves? How bout expanding our minds in all directions and research these picks and try to understand what people like about them and what we could like about them? Can't we give experimental pioneers respect just because we don't like the music on a daily basis? Why is someone a poser if he enjoys stuff you don't? How would you think if someone said so vice versa??

      Agreed. Trolling is a thing. Zola Jesus is very knowledgeable about these artists and obviously appreciates them. But even if she didn't love the music, would this be interesting if she was shouting out to Kanye and Pink? Nope. I've found lots of music I like by watching this series.

      It's misogyny.
      They'd be oohing and ahing if it was a man making the same picks.
      But women who make electronic music are supposed to be pixies or eye candy or something (sort of how men are supposed to be guitar gods, women are supposed to be at a piano), and they can't handle it that there's a woman who's deep into the genre they work in.
      Probably her picking a woman who pioneered electronic music makes them doubly crazy.

    Damn, didn't realize there was so much hate for experimental and noise artists. These live shows are usually filled with just as many women as men, and they are all normal behaving normal dressed. Compare it to a metal/hardcore show where it's just a bunch of greasy dudes in cargo shorts and all black and only a few girls.
    People legitimately like this stuff and I don't find her disturbing or weird at all. Most the girls I know into this type of stuff are actually ridiculously sweet and mild mannered. She's not faking her enthusiasm to look cool or unique, you can tell it's genuine. I'd wifey the hell out of someone that appreciates this stuff. Notice how she never once said it was "good" sounding stuff; she basically implied she's fascinated with the fact artists choose to make these albums. It's a common reason most people dig experimental music.

    • @danicb3
      @danicb3 8 лет назад +3

      +Dan Daianu Some people are pretty dumb and not open to new stuff. For example at the comments of the sharon van etten video theres a lot of people writing them off as hipsters for liking old folk and americana, whats up with that really. Like this people must ve found the video randomly somewhere for sure, cause there's no way that you are interested on this channel or the artist and after that you decide it's a good idea to type such bs.

    • @CodyChromeBand
      @CodyChromeBand 8 лет назад +5

      You can not be an "anti-hipster" and just plain hate the samples that were played. Obv the point of experimental music is inaccessibility so you've gotta expect more people to reject it initially and possibly never give it a chance. And of course 10 dislikes on RUclips equals one million dislikes in the real world.

    Just got to love Daphne Oram and Hermann Nitsch
    And that Donald Erb is going on the wishlist 100%. Didn't know about it yet.

    Not surprising at all that she has amazing taste in music! Now that I'm aware that at least some of Nitsch's Aktion music has actually been made available on physical format... SO happy I watched this!
    Nothing pretentious about liking experimental music. I get that for most people it holds little interest, but it's ignorant and a form of neo-anti-intellectualism to just dismiss it, hahaha. Without music like those she picked, you wouldn't have half of what's on the radio now -- Evolution and progress are inevitable! Nobody has to like "weird stuff", but it's silly to try to hold evolution back in any areas of art or society, because it's natural.
