Azula looked different because she was in bed and was drawn without her makeup. I always loved that as an added touch of realism. It's a contrast between her highly regimented look and makes her look kinder.
I think the first half of season 3's biggest strength is humanizing the fire nation. The first two seasons are centered around building up the fear of the nation has a whole, but these episodes show that the people are just people. They aren't all the army
venrakdrake No, the most emo is when Zuko's trying to learn how to make lightning. "Instead of lightning it keeps blowing up in my face, like everything always does."
I know a lot of people hate this episode, mainly because it is Avatar Footloose. But I can't help it, this has always been one of my favorite episodes of the entire series. It's got a lot of humor (Wang Fire), but it also provides us with out first look inside the Fire Nation, and as you see, it's a sort of combination of Nazi Germany, the Japanese Empire, and modern day North Korea. It's an entertaining, but also smart episode of Avatar. Plus, I can't help it, the Aang and Katara dance is one of my favorite scenes from the show, and I don't even ship Kataang. It's beautifully choreographed and animated, the music is fantastic, and it also shows how much of an impact Aang has had on Katara.
MetallicaRules I agree their whole dance scene is probably like the only scene of like a romantic development we see between them I guess you can say them but it was really nice to see I enjoyed it a lot even though I don't ship them either
A lesser show would have spelled out that Aang and Katara were doing modified waterbending figures, instead of showing it through the moves. (and context)
Just a quick thing - though it's pretty early, I highly recommend that you guys watch the 4-part finale in one sitting. You can release the videos to fit the schedule, but the finale really needs to be watched as a movie to be fully appreciated :D
Since you showed the clip thought you guys would've discussed the fire nation's attempt at revisionist history. Defeating an army sounds better than mass genocide of monks
So.. the first time I saw this episode as a kid, I thought it was SO weird that they stood up and said a pledge to the Fire Lord EVERY SINGLE DAY. But then I thought.. I did the exact same thing growing up for a good 8 years. 10:00 am, everyday, pledge allegiance to the USA flag. And I live in Texas(for those who don't know, Texas at one point was its own country), and we have our own flag and pledge to recite every single day as well(I do realize that other states also have their own flags). Its just so weird to me the way we were brain-washed as children. Of course there's nothing wrong with loving your country, but having it drilled into your mind everyday is a bit odd in my opinion. And also the way that the fire nation changes history by teaching their children what they want them to believe.. makes you wonder what kind of changes were made to OUR history.
Yesss, I'm very lucky to have had both my parents teach me differently at a young age. Cause I also had questions about why we had to repeat the stuff the told us to everyday
Yeah...I think you've watched too much of this show. This show is fictional bro. The US does pledge to the flag, but the flag represents the people of the country. The US is a democracy, the citizens do ultimately control the country. That's why protesting is allowed, why anyone can run for any office. And as for history, yeah...no. Like it's not even a possibility. Historical facts are wide spread knowledge, if it got out that something different was being taught in public schools, that would probably lead to a full reform of the us government. If you want to compare the Fire nation to a real world country, try North Korea. Their citizens are actually brainwashed into hating America, and most live in complete poverty.
Aang is getting more and more... I don't know - charming? Hot? Cute? Something along those lines. Even though the story just progressed a couple months since 1x1, he grew a lot more - he's getting funnier, and his changing realtionship with Katara is cute. Love his expressions during the "duel" with the bully and during the dance.
I rewatched the entire ATLA several times. Whenever I do though, I pick a focus. In one rewatch I did a Kataang focus and I was rewarded by many many episodes of visual cues, dialogue, interactions, observations by other characters in the show about Kataang. Made S1E1 all the way to S3E21 full of meaning for me. This is from someone who didn't mind if Zutara happened the first watch. Now I can't even stand Zutara (I now see it as toxic IRL if it did happen) and chalked it up to Dante Basco and his voice being sexy as the only reason.
GoldFlannel OMG ur the first person I’ve met that isn’t a simp for Zuko. I don’t know what people are so in love with him. Katara is a badass but he is just a pepperoni eyed emo boy 🤣🤣😭
Really good comment about Zuko wanting validation from others! I think that's an extremely important aspect to understanding his internal conflict throughout the entire show.
This is why they don't read the comments anymore. Everyone has their own idea of what a spoiler is. The problem with spoilers is, even if you didn't intend it to be a spoiler, or don't see how it is a spoiler, the result is still a spoiler. Especially a name like Sparky Sparky Boom Man, it doesn't take a lot of imagination.
A note about the architecture; the earth kingdom (outside of Ba Sing Se) and the water tribe have had to deal with a hundred years of raids from the fire nation so their culture would've suffered. Meanwhile the fire nation homeland would probably have gone mostly untouched by the war.
This is by far my favorite "filler" episode of the series. Just seeing Aang go to school and actually being a kid for once is just so heartwarming. Plus, the plot this episode is basically the plot to the movie "Footloose" which I absolutely love. This was also a heavy Kataang episode which always makes me gush of happiness!
This episode makes me want to dance even though I have no rhythm whatsoever xD ...I also loved how we got to see more of the everyday people of the Fire Nation. As a kid, I've always viewed everyone in the Fire Nation evil because they're the ones that started the war, ya know? Then this season happened and I realized that that wasn't true at all. They're all just regular people living their day-to-day lives. Oh and Kuzon was actually first mentioned in "The Blue Spirit" (S1E13) when Aang was talking to Zuko about the possibility of being friends. WANG FIYAHH!! FLAMEO HOTMAN!!! Kataang-o anyone? ;) Oh Zuko Zuko Zuko ... Poor Iroh ...
Lalisa T yeah I agree everyone in the Fire Nation isn't bad they're just regular people living their regular lives and yeah I was really sad for Zuko and Iroh too of course and team Zutara here lol!!!!!
This episode isn't just filler. It shows life in the Fire Nation and also shows how the Fire Nation unintentionally neglects students from fully learning the ways of the fire element by not letting them dance.
Aang didn’t give up Katara PERMANENTLY in order to unlock his final chakra, he only had to LEARN to give her up and come to terms with who he is as the Avatar.
The Headband, also known as the Footloose episode. Aang is being incredibly smooth, with his dance with Katara being as close to a sex scene as we'll likely get.
Sir Chester Bellington What's the difference between me saying the episode number and the title. The title doesn't give anything away, and even if I say the number of the episode, all it takes is for someone to google what episode that is and they get the name.

It can't be said enough that this show is phenomenal, but who else looking is looking forward to the day when a new show appears that can top even Avatar: TLA? Or at the very least, stand beside it as equal. Wouldn't that be amazing?!
Huh. I thought its quality alone would be enough to be completely immune to cancellation. Glad it made it to the end! I think people like it so much because it's the closest thing to perfect that you can get in a cartoon, but I don't doubt that it could be topped one day. In american cartoons, I mean.

Either way it's a great way to introduce a new voice actor. You only hear grunts or other insignificant noises and slowly forget the old voice while slowly getting used to the new one. Honestly, if I don't hear them side by side I couldn't tell that the voice actor was changed at first because they made him silent for such a long time.
Jake Morris that's true I really feel like that there would've been some conversation between the two but due to the death of Mako they didn't really have a voice actor for Iroh at the moment which is why he was silent
like what bunnit w said. mike and bryan said it wasnt because of mako's passing as iroh had already been recast at that point and that it was always planned that iroh wasnt going to talk to zuko.
What's most impressive about the fire nation this episode is that it suggests that they have some sort of formal, widespread (and seemingly public) education system.
Azula also mentioned that she, Mai and Ty Lee attended a school for girls that is probably reserved for the daughters of wealthy people and aristocrats.
The Fire Nation is an archipelago and they have the best metalworking techniques, which is why they have such good ships and even tanks. However for the Earth Kingdom, having their architecture be built with stone works for them, because Earthbenders can easily repair any damage or improve designs swiftly.
It's so incredible that the sun warriors said that the fire nation lost the true meaning of fire bending long ago and the nation itself also doesn't dance but in order to learn the true meaning behind firebending you have to perform a dance of the sun warriors: the dancing dragon. how did the writers make a homage to footloose a solid piece of world building and lore.

I like how you're the only reactors who've noticed Mai's side eye to Azula... or maybe the other reactors just didn't care about it and edited it out lol. But anyway, it definitely foreshadows about what happened at Boiling Rock.
Fire Nation Kid 1: Hey, you remember Kuzon from school? Fire Nation Kid 2: The kid who showed up and threw that sick dance party, then vanished? Fire Nation Kid 1: He's the AVATAR
Fun Fact: Aang wears his new head band upside-down to match the direction of his hidden arrow tattoo
BotsBoy 408 That's awesome, never noticed that!
BotsBoy 408 I actually never noticed that until I watched the Avatar Extras edition of this episode when they mentioned it.
I figured this out on my own after several re-watches... then I told myself "duh!" LOL

Sokka and Katara's dad's name is Hakoda. It's been mentioned before.
Rory reviewer yes it is in the intelligence report
It was also mentioned by Bato in a few of the scenes with them and Sokka in earlier episodes.
StygianTraveler141 That, and I think Bato mentioned Hakoda's name while Sokka was with the water tribe fleet.
Best moment:
"I already have a picture of Firelord Ozai...and here's one that I made out of noodles."
Very impressive
Nope. Not even by a long shot
I feel like there's better lol
I like the fact that they show Zuko covered in bars and Iroh in the clear
"those are enemy birds" kills me every time
Anything from Sokka's mouth is hilarious
Liam O'Brien facts😂
Sokka's the smartest one. Those birds were all spies.
Zuko, prince of the Fire Nation and king of Poor Life Decisions.
You ain’t kidding
Aww you guys cut out the most emo moment in the series i feel :(
"I don't hate you"
"I don't hate you too"
venrakdrake No, the most emo is when Zuko's trying to learn how to make lightning. "Instead of lightning it keeps blowing up in my face, like everything always does."
that too LOL, and metallica does rule
Those are great, but my favorite is still "I'm never happy".
Does “you’re crushing my individuality” count from LoK?
I don’t remember the context, but something Zuko said to sokka sounded super emo.
Sokka: fine, are you happy now??
Zuko: I’m never happy
Katara and Sokka's dad's name is Hakoda. It's been mentioned once or twice.

I think Aang said - "Let's do the practice routine". They did this many times before, off screen, and one would say "Practice paid off". Smooth

I like how you're the only reactors who've noticed Mai's side eye to Azula... or maybe the other reactors just didn't care about it and edited it out lol. But anyway, it definitely foreshadows about what happened at Boiling Rock.
The markings on the forehead of the assassin, which you guys mentioned as being illuminati , is actually Hindu .
Just Google "Shiva" images 😁
Funfact: In the german version Sokka didn't call Katara sapphire, he called her Lagerfeuer which is german for campfire.
Man, I love 💙🌊Katara🌊💙. And
🧡🌬Ang🌬🧡 and her are so cute. 😊
Sokka and kataras dad's name is hakota
Sokkas fathers name is hakota
toph looks great in fire nation clothing
Poor Iroh 😢💔
The actual reasoning Iroh isn't talking is because his voice actor passed away
Fire Nation Kid 1: Hey, you remember Kuzon from school?
Fire Nation Kid 2: The kid who showed up and threw that sick dance party, then vanished?
Fire Nation Kid 1: He's the AVATAR
Do you guys know the voice actor for Iroh died before season 3? So all the season 3 Iroh lines are from a different actor.
hahahah i died at "what do they teach at the fireschool?" "drop down and roll"
