Adam's latest machining project is a return to his Mercury spacesuit replica, his very first spacesuit replica project that keeps on getting improvements. Adam just upgraded the gloves on this suit with an amazing custom sewn pair, and turns to machining the distinct wrist coupler rings that connect them to the main suit. It's a painstaking process of turning a large round aluminum bar into hardware that looks right out of NASA's spacesuit shop.

I really love to watch your videos, I wish I have a space like yours and create what I have in mind...
If you went with tubing you would probably have resident freq. going on during your 60deg cuts on the press. It would've been super loud if you went that way. Patience was taught at Covid University. :) This is why our technology is so advance, over-engineering a glove that will never see space.
Are the jaws on his dividing head reversible ?
Please put I am an impatient money wearing shoes on a tshirt. Never both laughed so hard and felt so seen at the same time.
Im loving watching your videos and have thought you should look at ruclips.net/user/KEF791 Keith Fenner's Machining videos! All ways interesting and informative.
Adam, just call it what it is: "One Day [at a time] Builds." Love what you do! Thanks for sharing.
At this point "one day" refers less to the timeframe and is more the brand of the segment
or even better: "Adam Savage Builds:"
Lolol
One episode builds mabye
The camera movement from 29:21on is just marvelous. The first angle feels intimate, immersive, playful, framed by the mill itself. The smooth transition to the slitting saw is like getting to the point and then "BAM!" moving out into the open for the conclusion, with more room, more light. Beautiful long take.
I feel like this is the build that led to Adam wanting to paint his wrench for the mill. haha
I love how much of Adams humanity comes out in these vids: *deep breath* "this is a terrifying cut to make"
Finally a proper One Day Build again, I was getting worried with all these things that were actually finished in one day.
Your "Not amazing, but not bad" is so much better than most of our best efforts
The way the music starting playing quietly over Adam's little monologue at 31:30 was art. Love the editing!!! :)
"From everyone here, happy painting, and God bless my friend."
- Bob Ross
I honestly love Adam's solution to his milling problem. Him modifying an existing tool to do a job it previously couldn't, is in my mind what it means to be a maker. It's the origin of what making is, and it's why I love being a maker and I love watching makers do what it is they do best. Solving problems only they could run into.
I always do the “not like this” and no one gets the reference. Shout out for that lol
Yeah, with the Matrix being such an unknown and obscure cult movie I can understand how that reference would go unnoticed
God I love the color of blue Layout fluid is.
It is sexy
I kept thinking: "This is begging to be used on some Covenant equipment from Halo". Beautiful shade and translucency.
"I'm an impatient monkey wearing shoes."
aren't we all...
@@tekvax01 nahh. I hate shoes.
Making a list, checking it twice gonna find out if it’s square in the vice 😂
HAHAHAHA
When you don't HAVE the right tool, MAKE the right tool. Way to go.
Thanks Adam! Learned so much from you Adam. Even created my own personalized Mandalorian helm. The paint job and weathering is what really sells a piece and your tips and tricks really help in that department. Still need to create a permanent Visor and instal the electronics but it's coming along!
Adam,
You might want to look into getting some drum silences, they are large rubber straps designed to reduce chatter when cutting brake drums.
Switch played by Belinda McClory in the first movie "The Matrix" "not like this" is her most famous line in the movie.
Adam, you really need to make a broadcast show out of these videos. I could watch you make anything to your hearts desire. You are really the Bob Ross of creation.
Thanks for helping everyone get through 2020 and so far 2021 too, your inspiring in so many ways!
Oh man, these build videos are SOOO GOOD! :D Seriously, I'm thrilled that Adam and Tested are cranking out these vids so regularly, it's become a key part of my covid-era therapy. Thank you!
These videos have helped me so much. These 2 weeks.
Lover these kind of workshop builds. My father had his own engineering business. As a kid I would go in and help (hinder lol) him. Watching these videos brings back very fond memories.
Adam is one of my favorite inventor engineer person
A classic one day build! Good to see you again!
I always love a good spacesuit build! Thanks Adam!
I don't know how but something so mundane becomes interesting with you making it.
Thanks Adam
As a machinist I am loving the metalworking! I learned on a Bridgeport much like yours.
Love the montage music Adam, it's perfect for this type of work
Utterly AMAZING, can't wait for the next video
I have to admire how confident Adam has become on the mill in these last few months. I have a number of abandoned projects that I've set aside because I'm not comfortable with a step.
Adam, a tip for this kind of work. Think to yourself "This is what I do for my own pleasure / enjoyment. This is a process not a race. What I'm doing now is part of the story. Part of the journey. Not something that is slowing me down."
There is no client or prop master tapping their foot for this kind of work, this is for you. Learn to take joy from slowing down, doing things precisely. If it starts to get a bit overwhelming, go watch a Clickspring video. Enjoy the time taken with every stroke of his file to achieve perfection. Then in a calm state of mind, return to the workpiece and enjoy yourself.
Video quality looks great on this one!
OMG this is exactly what I need for one of my cosplays I am working on!
Oh they’re glorious. I just got my pair in today and they’re absolutely gorgeous
Love the Nausicaä Möwe model kit in the background.
Ive grown up watching this dude he is the best.
For those asking about The Song, it is: "Chill Breed" by Auracle. It is one of the songs on the music service that we subscribe to, which is called Jinglepunks. my.jinglepunks.com/player#versions/374790
The large number of comments about the music would indicate to some that the music is a distraction from the video. I found it extremely distracting and muted the sound during those periods. The question may be, Is this a video about Adam and his work, or is it about the editor's choice of music? Do people watch because of or despite the music?
@@timetravellingbunny3952 i personally like the music in the videos, it adds to the ambience, ill be cueing this one up next time im doing some craftin
@@timetravellingbunny3952 It's rare we have comments about the music -- it's just that particular song that people seem to like. We've tried other treatments of the timelapses, including ambient noise; music overlay is by far the most popular so far, but totally understand that it's not for everyone. Appreciate your watching and finding a way to personalize the experience.
@@tested Thank you for your response. At the risk of beating this with a horse, could the fact that you are getting increased responses about the music indicate that it is taking people out of the video? I wonder if recording with lower volume could be a treatment? But enough of that. Yes, thank you for your response. Anticipating the arrival of my shop apron.
@@timetravellingbunny3952 It's possible to enjoy both the project and the music. The biggest issue was that people really enjoyed the music that was selected and it both wasn't listed in the video description and is obscure enough to be hard to search for.
Adam: I’m gonna make 7 rings...
Me: Hmmmm, ok then. I will not worry until you also have made 9 other rings and 3 more...
"Three rings for the Apollo suit, above the sky,
Seven for the Mercury suit, painted like stone,
Nine for Nostromo crew, doomed to die,
One for the dark lord on his dark throne..."
@@houdin654jeff “In the Cave of Savage where the blueprints lie...”
@@houdin654jeff Nice!
@@houdin654jeff 😂👍👍
Not gonna lie, i dont miss the perfect production with the camera man and all that. I prefer adam with his phone so much better
Nice! More spacesuit builds! 😍
Hi Adam, hope you’re doing well
I’m high jacking this comment.
Adam and tested crew:
BETTER CAMERA ANGLES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
Besides that amazing work. Adams content is only hindered by the worst angles of mill work.
Diresta and Adam should have a baby
This was a cool build. Very interesting
Nobody likes to pull the vice from a Bridgeport. Takes to darn long to square it up again. Perfect world it two mills one with a vice that never comes off and one that you can clamp right to when needed. Love watching your builds. Tool maker here and l love watching people that know tools use them in a way that I never had the chance to or need to. Great work.
Man you inspire me with every one day build
What people do not understand is the amount of set-up time it takes for a job like that. Set up includes making hold downs where needed, layout of piece, modifying tools and cutters to do the job. many times after 4 plus hours of set-up time I will make 2 just so I do not have to ever do that set-up again. Some days you work your butt off and never get to the first cut of the work piece. Everyone goes thru that and have the feeling of failure or not getting the job done because we never think that the hard time consuming part is now done since there are no pieces to show yet. You are doing a great job, much better then I could do.
I can totally relate to this... just made my first gear on my RF mill using my brand new dividing head (similar to yours)
it was a 120 tooth spur gear, and had to make an arbor (on my lathe) with slot/grove for it as well...
That, plus all the prep/setup took most of my spare time for an entire week!!!
but finally got it done and it turned out perfect:-D
the satisfaction of making precision things/parts is hard to beat;-)
Love your videos Adam, you are a great inspiration and when i have the time i allways enjoy them.
best reg.
Micah Elm
Always enjoy watching your videos
This is a pretty good video to watch and 2X speed. Funny as hell....
31:53 This track slaps. I know you’ve used it before...but what IIISSS it? Giving me vintage Clapton vibes.
Yea i wanna know too
I came to the comments just to see if anyone had the sauce
I guess it’s just RUclips friendly non-copyright Muzak. I think if they use actual songs they could get demonetised, and the earnings go to the original artist. No expert, just my best guess!!!
@@cossie6824 I’m guessing the same, which would actually be great as we could use it for free, too. Just need someone to tell me what it is/where to find it.
(Might also just be something someone made exclusively for Tested...they have a community full of makers, after all, and I don’t think I’ve heard this used on any other channels, before.)
@@goodwolf152 after I replied I was going back through the comments and tested have actually posted where they get there music from. It a subscription service, so you probably still have to pay for it there!! I suppose someone is going to get paid somewhere along the line!!
"I'm an impatient monkey wearing shoes." This is going into my sig file.
Aslo the get-it-done-itis syndrome of procrastinating because I don't want to start something if I don't THINK have time to make a major accomplishment by the end of the day or chunk of time plages me. Trying to turn on my brain and hold all the things in it like balancing cups and saucers I will need to get into the head space of just before making the first cut - worrying that I will get started, interrupted and all the plates and saucers come crashing down and I have to start stack cups and squaring and shimming and getting this thing just right so I can make that cut and NOT FUCK IT UP after all that effort - it makes the smallest bump a mountain of intimidation.
I think there's a Zen of Making book in all the asides you make while making things.
This one had me holding my breath for you 🤣 Love coming along for the journey ❤️
Thats so a nice blue.
Lathe build! dope.
Damn Adam you’re keeping a roll on your uploads. 👌
We're trying!
Ooooh a tilting dividing head ! This old tony needs to do a video on this
Him using the metal lathe to brush on the marking dye feels like it would be satisfying
Adam thanks it was interesting. although I know it) always glad to see you)
Looks very intimidating
We had two ground pins that fitted into the bottom of the vice so that it would lock into the tracks on mill bed. This made it really quick for taking the vice on and off really quick. We also had some other pins that allowed for big plates to squares up against the back rail of the mill bed. Might be something to look at 🤷♂️
it is hard to leave something that to myself looks like little progress has been made. Adams pro tip for sure haha Love Tested!
I'm not sure whether this has already been commented, but at 37:20 you had the perfect opportunity to rhyme and say "I'm making the list, I'm checking it twice, and now it's time to take it off the vice" :P
31:30 these are gonna be one of the few words that stick with me in life.
adam my childhood has been made with you In mythbuster your AWSOME :)
This is the most Wintergatan-y One Day Build ever.
Make the music available. Nice build. Loved watching setting up the machining.
This content brings me such joy Adam Thank you !
12:07 would just taking out and reversing the jaws work?
When you cut the first face it was cool to see the refractory light intersect right at the center of the workpiece. I wonder how that could be used practically.
At 12:00, you say the chuck jaws are too small to hold the bar... maybe you know already but you can wind those out and they are reversible, in most cases! Put them back in the other way up and hold on the steps in the jaws. Take care to note the order they come out in and where each one was. Same for your giant brass bolt! Great videos, cheers!
I can really relate to the “getitdoneitis”. I’m six years into a kit car build with tons of modifications. Sometimes I spend a week to discover how not to do something. Simultaneously frustrating and oddly rewarding!
I need those for my FTR!!!!!
Very cool
Alexa: Someone is at the front door.
Adam: No, Alexa is lying.
Me: This feeds into my ghost theory.
I'd be willing to bet LikeLinda's Etsy shop just got a boost in orders.
Got that right! I’ve already ordered a pair of these gloves.
Adam, you can turn the jaws around on a lathe chuck to grab inside or outside diameters
because of you i made a sokol suit!
Reversible jaws on the rotary head!
Deffinately making 7 😂 that's the spirit Adam. I know that feeling very well.
i would love to see you involved in the maker secret santa with the hacksmith and colin furze. or even just a colab. love the content. keep it up!
please do a full mandalorian suit, would love to see how you make it all!!!
Wowzer!
We need to get a clickspring / Adam collab.
TOTALLY.
Maybe Adam can give ClickSpring a nudge, to finish that goddam Antikythera mechanism. I love that project- I really hope he finishes it sometime.
@@baconsarny-geddon8298 They were on hold looking at the next step.
@@wobblysauce But the paper is out, now, right? I hope he's just working on the next video, and it's taking a while, and like normally he has a queue of stuff, but because of the hold-up, the queue was empty, so..... we'll start getting regular videos again at some point??!?? I hope!
@@DavidLindes It is but still takes some thinking time with prep to make the parts
Using blueing on larger areas like that I have always used a pipe cleaner bent at a 90 to cover more area at one time. Just a quick tip from on maker to another. If you saw my can of Dykem it would always have a pipe cleaner bent around the lid.
You need to set yourself up an account with local tooling supply stores. They often will make 2 deliveries a day (early morning & early afternoon) to machine shops and as long as you are in a commercial facility I'm sure they wouldn't mind swinging by your place too even if you are only ordering one or two things every now and then.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
10:49 ADAM!!! WHAT DID YOU DO!!!!!!!
Famous last words. "I'm gonna try it."
Why does anybody give a guy like Adam a thumbs down?
As somebody named Ryan, who had this on while working in another monitor, the "I'm looking at you, Ryan!" at 36:36 was rather startling. :P
Yes
That moment when Adam says not too many people know the difference...I'm looking at you Ryan, and my name is Ryan.
I want a whole album of your time-lapse music.
Adam: - Alexa is lying to me.
My Alexa at home: I never lie.
Me: Do you know each other ??
Ive never had that problem with spray, same brand as that brush pot too
Adam Savage and Zen and the Art Of Machining Aluminum.
I want to make some space suit gloves just because i like the look
Adam this was worth the effort.
Next one day build? A misting coolant nozzle assembly for your mill.
Switch
Apoc just has "I hope the Oracle gave you good news" as his only line.
I'd love to have an I Spy book made from pictures of Adam's Shop! Got the idea from the shot at 32:59 when you can see the knight lighter in the bottom right hand corner of the screen
Thats a deep Matrix call-back!
Replica yes! But can they be used for snowboarding?
