  • Adam dons his replica Apollo-era spacesuit, made by replica spacesuit builder Ryan Nagata. As part of their ongoing collaboration, today's One Day Build entails milling parts for the spacesuit, including a radiation dosimeter and aluminum knobs. But all doesn't go right as Adam has to overcome a maker's slump.

      Adam you'll never know how much your closing comments about your mistakes/ screw ups etc as a 'maker' bringing you down even with your level of experience & I should etc etc etc well that really gave me pause & got me back to a project I'd blown hundreds of $$$ on already with fail after fail. I said..
      'well if Adam can still bone 1 up after all his years... Then what possible reason do I have to try again!!! Man! I just started with this s^%&! & I'm already blowing $$$ out everywhere! If Mr "award winning program where WE MAKE CRAP!!!" is still having issues!?!?! What in Satan's butthole of a reason do I have even trying!?!? Another 30yrs of failure!? I'm on my first project!.....AHHHH!!!...
      Sincerely,'
      Your biggest fan.

    This is one of the best ODB videos you've made. You show the process in detail without getting dull and didactic, and you show success and failure. This is why I love your channel. Please: more like this!

  • @alexaraldi6458

    Sadly for Adams the best part of this video (in my opinion) is showing him fail. People think they're not capable of doing something because they don't have the knowledge that Adam has, and showing him fail will remember to those people that they can do it, by learning, and mistakes are the best way to learn.

    • @setra23
      @setra23 7 лет назад +44

      This is one of the best bits about Adam's videos, he's not afraid to show himself failing. As you said, the best way to do something is it to give a go, get it wrong, learn and try again.

    • @ConradsStudio
      @ConradsStudio 7 лет назад +5

      While making mistakes machining is no fun, if I learn something then the day wasn't a total waste. It was very much not a waste if I learn how to correct things. Useful knowledge is often a much better takeaway than a perfect part.
      I watch many of the machining channels on RUclips like Abom79, Oxtoolco, etc. and even pros like Tom Lipton have "Mr. Bozo" come to town on occasion. As a novice, I find it encouraging that even real pros mess up. It's important to show the mistakes.

    Adam if you are scared of the cut off blade you should run it upside down and with the lathe in reverse that way it will never dig into the material if it is stuck.. that way it will be lifted out of the material if anything builds up.. further... gravity will help material fall away from the cutting edge also to prevent build up....Seriously... that's the way to do it...
    Guys please thump this up so Adam sees it...

    • @donaldmoore8023
      @donaldmoore8023 7 лет назад +17

      The flaw in this is that it decreases tool rigidity, thus increasing the likelihood of chatter, poor finishes, deflection and so forth. This leads to worn out tools, worn out tools create even more mistakes, and they need more pressure to cut. Basically, this is a compounding issue that quickly snowballs. QCPT tool holding, as Adam has, is designed to take force in a downward motion, (towards the floor) if it were to be ran in reverse, the tool could be lifted and cause other bodily harm. Lastly, the tool cannot actually be ran this way as the tool could not be placed on center to the lathe. Hopefully this is enlightening.

    • @FondlesHandles

      basically, tools can be replaced, body parts cant.

      What a load of crap.... that is in no way accurate...except it can give a poor finish if feed rate is too high, but it will do that no matter what way you run it..

    • @shammient
      @shammient 7 лет назад +4

      That's a pretty common (and really good) trick on small lathes. The lathe Adam has is more than rigid enough to part off without any trouble. Parting off can still be a dog of an operation, causes no end of problems for us hobbyists.

  • @DFMurray
    @DFMurray 7 лет назад +6

    Little tip for cross cuts, super glue a piece of wood to the front face once you are done facing/squaring it (turn the wood down to size as the metal stock). Then when you get ready to cross cut, you have a nice piece of wood to cut into first (sacrificial) to check your alignment. When done, just heat the metal part up with a torch and it will break the super glue bond.

    this video is the prime example of why adam makes things in doubles whenever he builds, and I love it. takes a lot of hubris to set out on a project thinking you'll do it all 100% right. It's great that adam doesn't cut out the 'mistakes' which really are just possibilities to learn new ways to do things.

      It took me far too long to learn that with machining parts. Adding 15-20 minutes to each step to make duplicates, is so much easier than going back hours in set up time just to get back to when you made a mistake.

      It's really frustrating to have worked for hours on something and have to finish for the day without having anything to show for it...except the experience you gain from learning from your mistakes of course.
      I can think of several projects where, after I'd finally completed it the first time, I could do it again in a quarter of the time and at half the cost...but I'd probably never have a reason to do it again. But there's the joy of doing and learning and (hopefully) the satisfaction of a job well done.
      My wife used to ask, "why don't you just pay someone to do that?" She's long since learned the answer: because then I wouldn't get to do it!

    So just a though... you could have used a simpler way to get the small slots cut
    If you made your fist small cut and then used the 8 steps on the dividing head to make 8 small cuts 45 degrees apart,then move your dividing head the the second of the three cuts reset to zero and follow the same 8 45 degree cuts etc...

    As much as I love watching the process and craft of making, I think it's that last 30 seconds of the video that are the real heart of it. It's a thing everyone who does anything needs to hear. You're human, you will mess it up. You can keep moving and hopefully next time you won't make that mistake. You'll make a different one. And thus the cycle continues, and that's OK.

    I studied as a machinist and spent time as an apprentice. I finished school to be a certified machinist with a AAS in metals manufacturing technologies....
    I never got to actually be a machinist and ended up doing quality control inspections of other people's work and being a CMM programmer. I am so envious of the mill and lathe Adam has, but I also have no place to put 'em if someone gave one to me :(
    I went through school imagining myself working on high performance engines, race cars, aerospace parts, or guns...instead I just look at them, measure them, and program robots to measure them. Generally I just get a part number and only even a clue as to what it goes to by what dept controls it; Nuclear Energy Commission, Atomic Defense, Dept of Defense, or International Traffic Regulations of Arms. Combined with the fact I am in New Mexico, I am pretty sure I work with nuclear weapons.

      CMM jockies are super important but if you are not happy then find a place that will take you in and start from the ground up.
      I had to work on the CMM today a bunch, I really dont like it...BUT you guys probably get payed pretty well so theres that at least.

    There is integrity in honesty. Showing the good, the bad, the ugly and the beauty is comparatively rare these days. People mostly want to manage their persona so only that which shows them in what they perceive as the best possible light is available for public consumption. Symptoms of a world that thinks beauty is skin deep. To show your mistakes and review the insecurities and self doubt they spawned takes courage. Without the blue days we might never know the red ones! Well done Adam, regards Karl

    Once again, the person(/team) editing this is showing that they have a deep knowledge of what the Tested audience loves in the One Day Builds. Already in the first minutes, there is already moments where music is close to non-existant (I don't hear any with my headphones on) and there is only the sweet music of the tools Adam is running.

    My favorite Adam video so far. I've watched 20 or so, and had developed a private criticism of "he edits out his mistakes". So, this video was refreshing and my criticism is now gone. I even noticed the cuts on his hands for the first time on this video... which are realistic if you've ever spent more than an hour on this type of work. Thanks Adam, for being genuine and genuinely interesting.

    Watching Adam work is amazing. Even when he messes up it's great to watch. We're literally watching a genius at work. I'd sweep his shop floor every day for free just to be able to maybe pick up a quarter of his knowledge of pretty much everything. His shop is literally a playground for tinkerers, lol.

    Hey Adam, you're a great person; I love you and the things you do. Your builds are utterly fascinating to watch and learning what I can from what you do is always a pleasure, even if I don't know what you're talking about half the time. Its just so fun to watch someone have the time, patience, intelligence and charisma to craft seemingly anything they put their mind to. Even in some very dark moments, you always find the bright side in it and take the necessary steps to reassess the situation and recollect yourself to make an effort to succeed. You are an inspiration to me and I can't thank you enough for posting content like this. I've binge-watched all the one-day builds and I can't wait for more. In the mean time, I'll try a little harder to emulate your perspective for myself so I can be as genuinely happy as you are. Thanks again!

    Honestly, Adam, don't take this the wrong way but it's really validating to see you goof a couple times on a build. It's good to have that reminder that even professionals have off days, and even better to watch how you work through the frustration. Thanks for leaving all that in for us, you probably hate seeing it played back (I mean, I would) but even that's valuable to us.

    Love watching Adam doing this kind of thing. His meticulous attention to detail is a pleasure to watch a man after my own heart. Admitting that he makes mistakes is a nice touch that effects us all and makes us feel better about our own difficulties when doing what is in all intense and purposes a meaningless task. One of those jobs that you don't tell the wife what you have spent the last 8 hrs doing!

  • @seancsnm

  • @bodford11

    Just speaking as someone who has taken a manual machining class and is currently is a Cnc course can I just just say when making depth cuts with an endmill you shouldn't use the quill feed it can walk and you just using it like a drill bit but that's just the way I was taught and I could be wrong

    • @bodford11

    • @donaldmoore8023

      To elaborate on this, he should have used the face of the endmill, traveling in the X-axis, into the part for the least amount chatter and deflection. However, given the circumstance, tolerancing, and Adam's given training/expertise not a big deal.

    Adam and the guys behind Tested this is your best video so far. To show someone whom so many look up to fail and for him to say it's okay breaks the "hollywood perfection" videos often show. This brings the god we all look up to, Adam, down to a human level we can actually relate to.
    Thanks.
