Hello, I am Magnetar. I reside within the Void where space and time become indistinguishable. It is here, too, where I can hear tales from all across the multiverse. Tales of horror, future technologies, AI, Aliens, cosmic horror, world-ending catastrophes, apocalyptic events, space, and more.
So, if you're brave, join me in the Void. Listen to their screams, their pleas, and their stories.
But remember - Astrophobes be warned
----------------------
What is a Magnetar?
Magnetars are some of the most mysterious of all heavenly objects and only one in ten supernovae create these dense cosmic dynamos. Out of more than 3,000 neutron stars discovered to this date, only 31 total magnetars have been confirmed, making their strange existence extremely rare.

Ted Chiang is a brilliant writer, thanks for including this gorgeous story.
I've watched the movie "The Arrival" but the way the story is written and the incredible way you tell it makes it so much better for me. Thanks for your beautifull work! I love it
This was such an incredibly thoughtful, beautiful story. It was so well paced, and well written, and so touching. The narration was excellent as well and really enhanced an already wonderful work!
Thank you for this wonderful comment
This is my 4th listen. I can't put words to the emotion that I get from the story I don't understand it but I keep coming back to it time and time again thank you for sharing it
I had no idea Arrival was originally a book! The movie and this story are amazing. The fact that you used the music from the movie has me emotional. I love it.
and I like the title Story of your Life better than Arrival, but when you think about it, this is two stories being told simultaneously so the two titles make sense.
Glad you enjoyed. One my of favs! 👾
This story is an example why human language is so intricately beautiful even though itself writes to decipher another. To those who dumpscroll on Tiktok thinking reading serves nothing , written language is why humans are superior.
Just a huge "Thank you a lot" !! To the writer and the channel.
Such an amazing work both the written AND the spoken!
The music was well chosen and mixed for this and I liked your narration. Thank you
Thanks for putting all these stories into compilations makes enjoying them that much better and easier.
It took like 5 hours to export and upload this for some reason 😭
Can you imagine being in this little life raft for 5 hours lol with those monsters standing around you
It reminds me of The Mist lol a cool movie but definitely a better story
I loved it when they made a movie from this book. It's actually one of my favorite movies. The Arrival. What a mind bending tale. You did a great job with this.
1hr 40mins in and just realised (I think) the story is being told as principle of how the light know the end destination and all along its pathĺ which makes a really great story even more clever in how's in been done.
Grammatically Gratifying.
Great timing I was just looking for something and my notification from you popped up looking forward to the story
Thanks so much for reading this and linking the parts together! I have always been awful at reading so this is really helpful.
Bravo! Thank you so much for your time and effort. This is one of those rare youtube videos you save and revisit. Thanks!
This was so beautifully written.
You do an amazing job, steady voice and very good at portraying emotions
Wow... truly amazing...an intelligent, richly immersive story....I found myself glad that I cannot readily recall the movie in my mind. (Maybe on purpose) Through your voice, I was transported. Mag, you are truly gifted to be able to read and to express this story, the verbiage alone! .... Not to mention its characters, and so so many concepts...linguistics, biology/sociology, psychology, philosophy, math, physics, and of course--all the many kinds of love, and human emotions.... Beautiful. Thank you for an incredible rendering...
This story this story whoever wrote it must have a pretty good understanding of something like mathematics and human dialect and good language comprehension and a well developed imagination.
Ted Chiang
He has a degree in computer science and he happens to be an absolute genius.
Please learn how to use a comma bro💀
He does, unlike you.
He spent five years researching the science before he even wrote the story.
Dude walked through the door and was like NOPE…. Lol
That was incredible.
Finally caught up on this story, loving it thanks 🤙
Wow.. just wow. Happy to have heard this. Great work!
That makes a lot more sense as a narrative than as a movie
A movie is a narrative
@@TheStarBlack **misses the point on purpose**
wow, listening to this I wish I had never even heard of the movie. thank you for narrating this.
Love the way you read it. Thank you for the post ❤🙏🏻
Beautiful. Ominous.
I literally have RUclips premium to listen to mag and scary Juju uninterrupted by ads. The added bonus is being able to download videos like this one for offline use on my other phone. Thank you for all the great work mag because getting thru my work day has been so much easier since I subbed to your channel.
Best of luck to the Astrophobic community. They are truly missing out on an awesome adventure led by the Man, the Myth, the Legend....
Mag 😂💪🏽🌟🏆

Both the story, and the reading were awesome
Sweet thanks 👾🤙
Fantastic!!!!
Noticed the variation or cover of the Arrival OST, good call. I initially said to myself "man this would be great if he could use the score without being hindered"
Question, what was the song in the background? It's so soft and melancholic. I could listen to it for hours. It's perfect for this story.
Edit: I know the name of the song, but not this cover. The original version is wonderful too, but I love the quiet somber piano in this version.
Heck yes!! 🫀☠️🫀
That was. AMAZING. The narration was perf too, really set the mood right. LOVEE IT, i didn't want it to end 🤣
Except he can't read the word causal
@@tamerlanenj wow you are so intelligent I am blown away by your intellect thank you random internet incel
Thank you man❤
Hey @magnetar, I found out that this is part of some kind of series and not a stand alone book! do you think if you have some availability you could read us the 'story of your life' series? If it's not in your genre or channel scope though no worries ☺️ I love your narrations of these types of stories and just had to ask 😅
Oh? I didn't know it was a series. I'll take a look
This was a very interesting series. I like how it was played out and how these aliens almost sounds like hanar from mass effect
First timer here🙋♀️ 3 minutes in, sounds great!!
Hey there! Welcome, and I hope you do give some of my other narrations a listen. This one is quite old, I've just recently complied all the individual parts together!
Amazing, thanks! I’m just going through your list now and I can’t wait to binge! Cheers!
Your stuff is awesome, you and JuJu are my newest and greatest, you do Space/Sci-fi type stuff which is great!
this was amazing. thank you so much
Soothing voice perfect for the story. You are awesome
Reminiscent of movie of the same name.
This is rather dense material and it’s a rare thing to trust your audience, respect them with this material.
Hard thumb up.
I Love this opening...
I love you 👾
@@MagnetarYT I Love You Too 🥺
So this is the movie the arrival but from Amy Adams character view with a twist. Nice job.
Still trying to catch up with your back load of stories. I listened to part 1 & 2 then found the compilation. Ya Hoo.
Great story as usual.
hey just me! I promise you dont want to fall asleep partway through this one you will only have to start over on the morning, its that good. oh and search "dead man running" Im sure youll like it
Perfect story to fall asleep to.
This is so beautifully written in comparison to the movie. The movie adaptation was surprisingly decent. I was kinda disappointed when I watched the movie the first time because my standards are based on my favorite movie of all time, "Interstellar", and the vibes I got from it was Carl Sagan's Contact updated to 2016. But after hearing it as a story, I have a bigger appreciation for it. Well done Mr. Chiang, and well delivered as usual Mag.
Best wishes to the Astrophobic community.
Interstellar is my fav too! 👾
ME TOO!!!
The film was great
Thanks. Can you do the 'three body problem' please?
story time 🍻
🥰 Beautiful
No u
@@MagnetarYT Come on, we *both* are 🤗
The "Arrival" if this story sounds familiar... 😅 Good job dude!
Also, how the Heck'n did you get permission to do a contract-tied story like this?
fuckin Sovereign from Mass Effect jump scare at the beginning lol
They landed at the airports, on the west coast
💙👍
that was profound and touching, heartbreaking and iust awsome. Truly a literary treasure, thankyou Magnatar for this and special thanks to Ted Chiang hats off to you sir you are truly a national treasure
Very good story, beautifully narrated! I never saw the movie and I find the eponymous biographical parts boring, but the whole lot of linguist/ physicist ideas is really fascinating.
Re listen, the ‘biographical’ parts are her remembering the future - an effect of learning to read Heptapod-B!
Also, I noticed several places where "casual" was said in places where "causal" should have been. Causal as in causality. Cause and effect. Not casual as in "casual Friday" 😅😂.
Those are some cool background images 😋
16:25 heptapod first appearance
I wish I was a heptapod
So Ted wrote a short novella that became a movie? Or is this some fan alternative?
I have no idea what I just experienced.
what was that intro, was in mass effect
Having read this and seen Arrival, it's ROUGH listening to the first part......
Greatly enjoyed this story until I got to your pronounciation of Fermat. 😂
And "integral." Sorry, I'm OCD.
This sounds like the movie Arrival.
Because the movie was based on this short story
Could anyone tell me if 'causal' and 'casual' pronounced same or differently? There's a few confusing moments.
They are completely different words that have nothing to do with each other. The guy reading this is just an idiot
Gosh dang! That wasn't sci-fi that was some sci-🔥
Remember to like, comment, subscribe, and be sure to hit that bell for more sci-🔥 reads!

The kangaroo thing is bullshit :)
1:22:40 nice joke
Magnetar your always gonna be my favourite but please TDC do this story!!!!!!
I'm not crying; you're crying, crybaby!
Love it except I find the music annoying
Really great job!! But do you have a version without the music in the background??. Your voice and delivery of the text is enough.
I do not, sorry. I plan to begin uploading narration only, podcast style mp3s to other sites.
@@MagnetarYT that's too bad. You have a lot of talent you should do more of a classic style "podcast" audiobook.
Ending A
Very nice reading. A bit annoying only that he pronounces “causal” as “casual” and “teleological” as “theological”…
01:14:44
24:17
Didn't you miss a few paragraphs at 1h41, when it talks about free will?
1:45:53
1:55:38
That was unexplicably mid, what even happened bruh, thanks for the audio tho
1:23:20 (19)
My only complaint is that you read CAUSAL as “casual” every single time 😭 really quite a hugely important aspect of the story to mispronounce as it drastically changes the meaning of what’s being said
Potato, pātato... get bent ya control freak
Lmfao ok pissbaby
Way too many ads.
This is the movie Arrival, sure there is some differences but the story is the same
Well yea... That's because the movie is based on this story
Rr
Ummmm... Isn't this essentially The Arrival?
Give the title a read again, and the description a once over 🙃
Literally the reason the movie was made.... Smh these ppl
@@The_SCPFoundation LOL, he literally thinks, "This story ripped Arrival off!" 🤣🤣
Causal not casual jfc. Way to ruin the story
Why does it keep interrupting the story with random flashbacks? It seems useless and annoying
Because it's a literary device that actually helps tell the story?
Ah, ok. Just felt so random when out of nowhere there was flashbacks talking about a child
