So this was a surprise… I’m Rance 😂. The guy who got the Silverburst. The shop I got it from is actually a great guitar shop in a city that’s known for its live music. Im always on the lookout for good deals on cool guitars here and come across them pretty often. There’s a ton of shops. This one particular has quite a few high end and vintage guitars. I want to say they had ANOTHER 70’s or early 80’s LP custom with maybe the worst refin I’ve ever seen. It honestly looked like thick spray paint. The guitar itself looked structurally sound. It had a similar price to the silver burst if I remember correctly. I know this shop takes in things on consignment from time to time, so I’m wondering if that was the case on those two customs. Would be a helluva deal for someone who knows how to do a proper refinish.
@@stvo2009 I have had a headstock repair done too to my 2006 Standard, if it's done right and you really can't feel it it's good enought for me. I had a lot of play wear on the "cowboy" chords but the repair was so well done it looks and feels like playwear. Great touch up... the luthier put 3 maple blocks in the break with glue and sanded it down the right way. I hope Rance is enjoying this one. The heel cut ain't that bad either. Wouldn't do it to my guitar but players grade, it's great. If it makes the upper fret access better, why not right?
I remember a while back I was in Missouri and so I started getting fb market place sellers in the general area I was in and came across an Ibanez gio which was awesome by itself but here’s the part where faith in humanity has been restored I was battling cancer at the time and I believe we were up there as a hurricane hit my state and because he knew the reason why we were up in Missouri aside from visiting family he dropped the price to like 150 again I don’t remember the exact price but he gave me a decent deal and even threw in a cheap frontman 10g and I didn’t even realize he was going to throw an amp into the deal so I had my grandparents swing by the music store and pick up a cheap amp so I now have 2 fender frontman 10gs 😂 but I was grateful he dropped the price given the situation with Louisiana being hit by a hurricane I think what also helped a bit was the unfortunate fact I was battling cancer which sucked because I hated having special treatment but that guy was a great man and his parents did a great job raising him, I legitimately thought there was no kind souls left in the world but he proved there was!
I got a 73 Strat from my buddy’s garbage can. (He wasn’t a guitar player!) Just happened to be visiting while he was spring cleaning and saw him throwing it out. So I took it home.
The first few made me wince , the ' Ralphie ' SG makes me think of the Honeymooners with Jackie Gleason with Norton saying " Hey Ralphie boy ! "...I recently bought the ' Beauty of the Burst ' book and oh me oh my what a feast for mine eyes ! Thanks Trogly !
No shop is putting vintage Les Pauls on the floor, so you can't judge a shop by the photo of the floor items that are usually under $500 in any shop. Given the modifications and condition that we know of, this is about a $3000 guitar. We also don't know what other devaluing condition the guitar has. As for price comparison, you cannot compare pricing at a store vs Reverb/Ebay since online stores charge their ridiculous fees. Used guitars on Reverb/Ebay guitars will always price higher.
SGs are great guitars period. My go to. So cool you have a standard with P-90s. I have a 94 Standard in H.C. and a more recent SG Special faded Pelham Blue with P-90s love em both!
@@scottmartin356 maybe they bought the wrong size, or got tuners for a Melody maker or junior sized headstock? Odd they’d have the nice buttons, unless they swapped those off of something else.
5:47 My working theory leaves two explanations. Either the tuners wouldn't turn with the full wings, or he dropped it. With a chip on one side, it was filed down and of course, it had to be symmetrical.
Hey Trogly I've got more info on that silverburst. It was for sale at South Austin Music earlier this month. They have a yearly auction and while that guitar wasn't part of the auction it was sitting right up front by the door. I of course went right to it when I saw it and my eyes popped out at the price tag. The issue that the buyer isn't disclosing on it is that it had a headstock break that was very cleanly repaired and disclosed to potential buyers (was the first thing they told me while I was noodling). Normally I'd just brush this off and carry on but if this thing ends up being flipped, potential buyers should be made aware of this. Also, S.A.M. is a fantastic shop that doesn't just sell a bunch of imports, that's just the section of the store that can be seen in the pictures. They have 50's LPs and LP Jr.s, 60s 335s, 60s mustangs, strats, and teles, as well as vintage amps. They also hold the yearly auction where I saw a 57 CS gold top go for 2900, a 64 mustang (with some holes from a bridge swap that had been done then restored to original) that went for 1900, and a 69 vox ac30 that went for 900. These guys are musicians who also love to take care of other musicians. Though I can't personally verify if they got the year wrong on the silverburst, they deserve more credit than they were given.
I bought the guitar… I can assure you there is no headstock repair. Even put it under a black light. Headstock is as clean as it can be. If you pay attention to the guitar, the neck is also painted silverburst, it would be pretty apparent if there had been anything done. Before you go off and tell me I don’t know what I’m talking about, they also had it listed as an 82’ when the seriel # was 9###7😂. Lots of mysteries with this one
@Thisisrance they literally pointed out the spot that is repaired to me at the shop. I circled it and showed it to you on one of our mutual pages that you posted on. It's faint because it was a solid repair, but it's there.

I can't emphasize enough what you said about making sure a shop specializes in what you're trying to sell. The style and vintage of a guitar can make a big difference in that regard. A shop that specializes in a particular type of guitar not only knows correct specs and parts for the guitar, but also how to price it the best, and likely already has a clientele in that area.
@@Thisisrancefair enough. I’m not necessarily referring to your case, but I’ve seen literally thousands of dollars lost by sellers consigning to shops that don’t understand the archtop market, which is my specialty.

Screamin' deal??? lol I'd say at 45 years old, heavily played, heavily modified, damaged, missing parts, 2200 is more like maybe a "fair" price. Still have to consider condition of electronics, are frets still useable, etc...
Kind of related but tangential question about buying a les Paul, is it common for the a and e strings to touch behind the nut? Is it a problem if so? My new LP has this “issue”
Still regret it but $2200, that is less than what I got for a 78 silverburst in the late 90s (all original) it was the heaviest guitar I have ever played topping 13 and a half lbs...sustain for days. the seller would have been better to consign it somewhere like gruhn guitars or get someone tech savvy to get fair dollar price. even today that silverburst should get $4k everyday

You have such a hard on for the Adam Jones guitar. I remember admiring it in 92 but didn't think much of it. At least it doesn't have an ugly flame top.
The shop did not screw up, it just priced it normal, like it would be in every shop if there were no to-rich collectors who ruin the market, making it impossible for normal hobby players to buy an old Les Paul. 20 years ago and before internet they would probably not even had bought it or traded it in because the looks and damage. Or for a few hundred dollars. But the whole relic "thing" made ugly/worn guitars even more expensive.
