It almost looked like the series was about to slip away from the Jays too. They blew a 5-1 lead in that game in one inning to give the Phillies a 6-5 lead, and they squandered a bases loaded opportunity in the 8th. For all intents and purposes, it looked to be heading towards an epic collapse. Thankfully, Carter had other ideas. :D

@@stephenmiller2337 Which one? '92 or '93? I'd say '93 was more exciting in that it was won in walk-off fashion. I made a videotape (remember those?) of Joe Carter hitting the homer. I had the tape in the VCR and the VCR running in case something big came up, which it did.

They had an advantage over previous expansion teams in that could they draft from both leagues whereas before the expansion teams could only draft from the pool of players from their own league. Plus the established teams could protect fewer players in their organizations for the draft. So the later expansion teams had a better head start in forming competitive teams.

Another thing, the Pittsburgh Pirates (favored by most baseball fans where I live) last won 100 or more regular-season games in 1909; however they've won over 100 since the advent of divisional play, factoring in postseason wins along with, say, a 96--66 regular-season record. In fact I believe the Pirates won 110 games in 1909, en route to beating Detroit in the World Series. It was well over 100 regular-season wins that year, anyway.

So basically, the 1990s: New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves (rinse repeat)
2000s: Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, Giants (rinse repeat)
So if you had to GUESS who was going to win the World Series, and you picked from the Yankees, Red Sox, Giants, or Cardinals, you would probably be correct at least 75% of the time.

@Mayhem Jr. I was a kid and I knew the Reds would win that series, though I didn't think they would sweep. The Reds were a power pitching team and Oakland struggled against that. The Reds were also a team that manufactured runs with steals and line drives amd could hit for power. They were also a veteran team. From the mid 80s to 90 the Reds almost always finished second and should have made the playoffs a few times. They were also really talented. If Eric Davis and Jose Rijo had stayed healthy that team would have had three HOFers (Barry Larkin) with a borderline fourth one with Paul O'Neill.

1991, 1992, 1996, 1999. Braves lost 4 World Series in less than a decade. Jesus, 1996 hurt especially. As a Braves fan growing up, that series and the Leyritz bomb literally broke my heart as a young baseball fan. I only followed baseball casually after that as a defense mechanism I think so it wouldn't be as painful. After they lost again in 1999, I pretty much stopped watching. I don't think I've ever sat down and watched a full game since....just bits and pieces.

1990 was an impressive upset. The '90 Reds were massive underdogs. I personally think the Pirates in the NLCS were the bigger challenge.

Also, I think to find the last time the Giants clinched a World Series on their home field was 1922. I do know of the five they've won since, all have been clinched on the road. 2014 was the first time since '79 that the road team won Game 7, and it's happened twice since then: the Cubs in '16 and the Astros the next year.

Mariano Rivera ending WS in '98, '99, '00, '01 and '09. What the hell man? How selfish of him.
Joe Carter was the man responsible for ending the 1992 & 1993 World Series. He caught the final out in '92, hit a Series ending Walk-Off in '93.
Edgar Rentaria ended two World Series as well. He hit a Game 7 Walk-Off in 1997, and grounded out to end the 2004 World Series.
3 men, nine separate World Series ending plays between them. That's just crazy.

If you want to win a lot of bar bets, or just stump a baseball fan, ask who made the "last out" of a World Series that ended with a walkoff hit ('91, '93, '97, '01). Even better, the answer to two of them, '93 and '97, is Devon White (a flyout two batters before Carter in '93 and a fielders' choice one batter before Renteria in '97). The other two were sacrifice bunts (Chuck Knoblauch in '91 and Jay Bell in '01).

Just a couple tidbits of useless information on some things I noticed. Joe Carter had the final put-out of the 92 series and final at bat of the 93 series. He also hit a walk off single to win the 91 division title for the Jay's. He also was the final at bat when when the Cubs won the 98 wild card one game playoff against the giants. Edgar Renteria had the final at bat of the 97 world series to win it for the Marlins and had the final at bat of the 04 world series to lose it for the Cardinals...

Jays were a pretty well oiled machine by that point. They got rid of their jitters against the Braves. The Blue Jays batting line up was a murderers row. Even better than the 92 team. 4 .300+ hitters, (that was the year Olerud flirted with .400 for almost the entire year). And it was apparently the first time in 100 years that the same team had the top 3 hitters in the league (for average). 3 100+ RBI guys and Alomar at 93. And the pitching was good enough. Well balanced. Dave Stewart was still an intimidating starter and Guzman was pitching very well. Ward had become a pretty great closer.
