An interesting side note: in 1957, Decca wanted to record act 1 of die Walküre with MDM and Flagstad. But Flagstad rebelled against MDM, and that's probably why he never made a great career as a Wagnerian. A Walküre on Decca would have been his breakthrough in that fach, no doubt about that. Instead, they just let him record a few arias. A pity.
To be honest I prefer James King as Siegmund (which he eventually sang in the Decca recording). He had an absolutely gorgeous voice too and was basically fluent in German (no audible accent to me)

Modern singers just seem to not onlynsing far weaker..limited in fulness and just plain Beauty of tones...they always sound and LOOK struggling ....whether soft or loud highnor low middle..as if they're ALWAYS about to reach limit..at end of phrase you get so uneasy that that was "barely made it in time!!..."". Leaves an empty feeling.. Whereas the olde school..they SOUND like Fillmore energy reserves..breath length...phrases are finished with a COMPLETE tone ..just so different because ...BETTER!

Of so many magnificent, and in certain cases, legendary tenors of the past having sung this repertoire, it's safe, at minimum, to say there was at least no better suited "bari-tenor" voice than MDM for those Wagnerian roles written in this tessitura. I've never heard Siegmund's stuff more naturally "settled" in a voice, than his. Not a big leap of the imagination to contemplate a Parsifal and a Tristan from this voice.
What a charisma, what a voice! Would he have learnt to pronounce German vowels correctly and disciplined himself just a little bit, he would have become by far the best wagnerian tenor of his time. The only one able to succeed Max Lorenz.
I know right? He sounded so good when singing Wagner except for the fact that his German wasn't pronounced correctly. He most definitely could've done well with Wagner's tenor roles.

This is how he REALLY lived, con vivace! One of my accompanists was also his accompanist for his coachings for Otello and Aida (yes he is rich in years!) and cherished those moments in the studio. "Mario was always alive!" He looks like he is labouring here with his breath so this must be post accident. I have a signed photo of MDM that my wife found, he was Canio- but more interesting was the photo appears to be signed to me "A Nello..." but probably was for Nello Santi. I treasure this most.

Wieland Wagner invited Del Monaco for several years in Bayreuth but for several reasons, Del Monaco declined the offer. K.Flagstad liked Del Monaco very much contrary as it is proclaimed by certain people and Karajan wanted Del Monaco in Tristan, but once again, he decluned the offer. So....Wagnerian or not? He was one of the rare Italians able to sing it. You like it or not, it s another story.
Vocally, this was no longer the great tenor of the 50's, but his musicianship and love for opera was unwavering. And yes, he was quite a character as well. I loved his excitement and enthusiasm for Wagner. Del Monaco will forever hold his own as a legend of the operatic stage.

I love his Wagner recordings that I have. Many people think he sang Wagner in an overbearing fashion, but imo, he sang it like a true heroic italian tenor, with open vowels and a forward sound. I don't know if he recorded a full version of any Wagner opera, perhaps someone could enlighten us!

Well, from a psychological standpoint, I think he was more extroverted and less confident after the auto accident, which damaged his kidneys and broke his ribs, and took away some of his vocal ability. Almost all of the films like this (many made at his home) were done post-accident and his personality is exaggerated in these. He’s my favorite tenor and these are just my observations.

In video del genere la somiglianza di Del Monaco con il grande Totò è veramente impressionante. E l'effetto comico davvero non è minore. Io mi chiedo tutti quelli che commentano entusiasti una bambinata simile che concetto possano avere della serietà dell'arte, della professionalità di un interprete musicale. I pochi brani wagneriani incisi da Del Monaco - qui nemmeno lo si apprezza - sono uno dei punti più bassi mai toccati dal punto di vista della superficialità, dell'infantilismo, dell'istrionismo ridicolo. @VivaRenata I agree with you: Martha Mödl is adequate but not as outstanding as Flagstad would have been as Brünnhilde in a better vocal shape. All in all, it's a classic recording, the testament of the great Furtwängler.

Mario's a lil nutty here isn't he? But I LOVE it=) So, much passion! & When he cranks out his voice...no 1 & I mean NO 1 comes close 2 his sound!!! Well, from a psychological standpoint, I think he was more extroverted and less confident after the auto accident, which damaged his kidneys and broke his ribs, and took away some of his vocal ability. Almost all of the films like this (many made at his home) were done post-accident and his personality is exaggerated in these. He’s my favorite tenor and these are just my observations.

In video del genere la somiglianza di Del Monaco con il grande Totò è veramente impressionante. E l'effetto comico davvero non è minore. Io mi chiedo tutti quelli che commentano entusiasti una bambinata simile che concetto possano avere della serietà dell'arte, della professionalità di un interprete musicale. I pochi brani wagneriani incisi da Del Monaco - qui nemmeno lo si apprezza - sono uno dei punti più bassi mai toccati dal punto di vista della superficialità, dell'infantilismo, dell'istrionismo ridicolo. Wagner ne sarebbe stato inorridito e avrebbe certamente ripetuto i soliti luoghi comuni dei tedeschi, da Beethoven a Nietzsche, sulla poca serietà degli italiani. In questo caso assolutamente a ragione.

Caro Alessandro, Se non hanno capito Gesù Cristo, potevamo mai credere che capissero Mario Del Monaco? Giovanni Battista fu il predecessore di Gesù in quanto gli preparo’ la strada facendo la volontà del padre celeste e predicando la venuta del Salvatore e la primissima forma di battesimo. Era un uomo giusto. Che fine ha fatto: Decapitato. Mario del Monaco, un uomo che ebbe la vocazione sacerdotale nell’adolescenza ma che grazie al suo confessore gli fu fatto capire che Dio lo aveva creato per cantare ed esprimere la fede proprio con la voce tanto da diventare un vero e proprio fenomeno e miracolo vocale. Che gli è successo? Insultato, denigrato, criticato da Celletti e da altri detrattori invidiosi e i ignoranti e oggi giorno divenuto quasi un ricordo sbiadito e sotterrato artisticamente e vocalmente da vocine rielaborate, amplificate e falsificate come Pavarotti, Bocelli e in ultimo per mettere la ciliegina sulla torta, da quella tromba ingolata di stampo ibrido che è Kaufmann. Ci manca solo IL VOLO che cantano con tre voci maschili un pezzo da tenore soprano e baritono. È proprio vero che chi vuole fare qualcosa di buono a questo modo diventa un martire e Il nostro caro Mario pur essendosi preso grandi soddisfazioni personali con la sua voce e nel mondo al livello artistico, è stato e lo sappiamo, una povera vittima di questo mondo e incompreso fino alla fine. Intanto però non c’è nessuno che abbia mai emesso una nota come lui tutt’ora. Chissà perché, è?!?! Guarda, se non c’era Mario, avrebbero detto le stesse cose di Corelli come d’altronde le dissero anche di Caruso. Saluti caro!
