Extrordinary tenor, one of the best of the best of all times!!!!. la sua voce di un tosto eroico "magnifico", anche di grandisima belleza. People tended to say "this or that" in his singing, but by God, who can denie this is the true emsion for this kind of repertoire. Besdiedes this, his vocal technique probed to be one the best, he sang until his last days with more or less the same beauty. He is a "singing master class" for me. Bravo, Viva Del Monaco!!!

      no comment
      il vecchio
      PS

      Fantastico Del Monaco .

To see this level of passion and love for Wagner is infectious. You can tell he loves every single second; as if his heart were rising with the melody. This is EXACTLY how I feel when I listen to Tristan und Isolde. The music, the rising timbre, and the emotions make you feel like you're being tossed around in a storm.

  • @AfroPoli
    @AfroPoli  10 лет назад +51

An interesting side note: in 1957, Decca wanted to record act 1 of die Walküre with MDM and Flagstad. But Flagstad rebelled against MDM, and that's probably why he never made a great career as a Wagnerian. A Walküre on Decca would have been his breakthrough in that fach, no doubt about that. Instead, they just let him record a few arias. A pity.

Of so many magnificent, and in certain cases, legendary tenors of the past having sung this repertoire, it's safe, at minimum, to say there was at least no better suited "bari-tenor" voice than MDM for those Wagnerian roles written in this tessitura. I've never heard Siegmund's stuff more naturally "settled" in a voice, than his. Not a big leap of the imagination to contemplate a Parsifal and a Tristan from this voice.

One of my accompanists was also his accompanist for his coachings for Otello and Aida (yes he is rich in years!) and cherished those moments in the studio. "Mario was always alive!" He looks like he is labouring here with his breath so this must be post accident. I have a signed photo of MDM that my wife found, he was Canio- but more interesting was the photo appears to be signed to me "A Nello..." but probably was for Nello Santi. I treasure this most.

Almost all of the films like this (many made at his home) were done post-accident and his personality is exaggerated in these. He’s my favorite tenor and these are just my observations.
