I run all my Apple TVs in 4K SDR with match dynamic range and frame rate set to On. I don’t care how the screensavers look; I’d rather have the content I’m watching look better than a screensaver. If the screensaver is activated, that means I paused the content to go do something and am not there to look at it anyways!
I mainly use RUclips tv on the AppleTV and when set in Dolby vision there are too many handshake changes. I went back to using 4K SDR. If I'm in the need to use the screensavers, I'll manually switch to Dolby vision. I did not know about this before your video. Thanks!
I run the SDR setting. The wallpaper still looks good and to be honest, the wallpaper only runs if for some reason the tv is left not playing content. It is a family tv, so it happens. The less static images on my OLED the better, although i don't really consider burn-in an issue.
Ah-ha!!!! My Apple TV screen savers DID NOT work when format set to 4K SDR (it only showed the LA cityscape over and over) but ALL THEMES DO SHOW when set to 4K Dolby Vision and match range & frame rate. THANKS FOR THE TIP!!!
Hey Jaremy, since I saw one of your video’s I changed from HDR to SDR and believe it is an improvement. Before the change some of the dark spots were ugly and not black/black. I had this on Apple TV+ and Netflix. Always good to see you and the info is Great
Bad things can happen sometimes when you unnecessarily put SDR content in an HDR container. The first HDR ATV were doing this in a not so great way and needed fixes and then the match dynamic range came along.
Great videos, thanks. I´ve seen people (FlatpanelsDK) recommend not having "Match Dynamic Range" on - on lower-end TVs. Mine is a Crystal UHD 4K (DU7100 series). I haven´t tested it yet myself - what are your thoughts?
I would assume they say that because cheap TV probably don't do HDR any justice, so better to just leave them in SDR. I'm not sure about your model though.
If you running in 4:4:4 your bandwidth increase with higher refresh rate means you are likely dropping your actual color bit depth from 10 to 8 bits . Better to have it set to 4:2:0 which is the default that streaming services use. So you are artificially upscaling anyway. Also leaving the Apple TV on sdr with content matching means that your sdr content displays correctly even when the content doesn’t flag as SDR instead of blowing out the colors , it also allows you to have other content match the refresh etc better.
Thanks! I don't agree with your HDMI setting assessment though. The latest Apple TV 4K has an HDMI 2.1 port with requisite higher bandwidth. Content will still be 4:2:0, but that is what is natively sent as. 4:4:4 is for menus, games, and such. Nothing is being artificially handled or being dropped.
quick ?, I too have atv4k and LG oled, atv4k set to 4k sdr with match content and frame rate turned on. When using youtube app, there is a 2-3 second black screen with atv4k each time a in video ad starts and stops, with app on LG oled it is there also but switches much faster (not as long a black screen). Can this be fixed so there is no black screen with youtube app on atv4k?
There's no saving the black screen HDMI resync time until we get QMS features fully deployed, then you shouldn't even notice them. That said, TV syncing is still really fast compared to projectors, which are terribly slow.
@@TechthusiasmQMS only works with frame rate changes, you’ll still get the black screen handshake with changes to dynamic range. As RUclips has frame rate matching disabled anyway it won’t resolve this issue. Also QMS is already active on the ATV4K 3rd gen, but only currently available on some 2023 TVs.
Here's a question, with the generally accepted recommended settings of 4K SDR & match frame rate/content = on then why can't the ATV honour these setting & switch the output to DV for the screensavers themselves? are we sure that screensavers are natively in DV? (Is that what you were trying to show in the HUD that they were?, apologies if that is the case). As someone with a family that routinely just pauses TV & walks away leaving the screensavers showing for extended periods I think I'll stick with 4K SDR + match all default video settings. On a seperate note, I'd have thought the LG G2 you have supported QMS but that option wasn't showing up, when I enquired with LG they said all UK TV's from model year 2021 would get QMS, Is the ATV you are using in this video the 2022 (latest) model?
It would be nice to be able to specify an SDR menu and DV/HDR screen savers. Then with match dynamic range, it would switch. Overall though, I don't think people would prefer that because of the black screen required in between to change ranges. Better to have the savers and UI use the same range. The savers display in whatever mode is set as the default in settings, so yes, they are in DV when DV is set (per the overlay, yes, this is confirmed). I have the latest model ATV. I didn't think my G2 has been updated for QMS with ATV, yet. Not sure if both will be.

Hello, great videos. I have a question for an expert like you. Are the streams from Netflix Amazon and Co played back by the Apple TV 4K with a higher Bit rate than the native apps?
I don't have a good way to measure bit rates on other platforms like I do on the Apple TV. That said, I trust most apps, included Apple, to offer their best quality/reliability on Apple TV over other platforms.
Before I use the APPLE TV 4k player as a paper weight, could someone tell me why it completely cuts off running programs and why the player turns on by itself?
I have tried multiple combinations of settings. Haven’t had any luck. RUclips TV sounds way better using the App from the TV vs using the app on the AppleTV 4K. Seen things on Reddit discussions about it. Any thoughts or possibly something you could dig into at some point?
There was a good amount of feedback to the original settings video that was basically "what about the screen savers", so I figured I'd check it out and see.
I completed the settings from your last clip. However Cannot change them now.Nor use UK application bbc itv5 16.6 update since +help talk with Apple Cork+power reset +2 retrys. Gave me Dolby vison 4K60hz. With apps going to try reinstall.
I have the 2021 box. As per my calibrator’s recommendation for my Sony 83 A90j OLED, settings are 4kSDR, RGB high and both matches set to on. Picture, including the screen savers is superb.
Turning on Dolby vision and not matching content also makes some SDR shows look better plus it makes dialing in your lip sync much easier. I have found if you match content lip sync is different depending on the content and/or app used. It's a pain because there are also other times matching content looks much better. Why is lip sync still a pain in 2023. Oh and dont get me started with the HDMI sync times.
I was having the same lip sync problem. I’m not sure how you run your hdmi but I found that running mines directly to my Sony OLED instead of running it through my receiver fixed my lip sync concerns.
Hey man, talked to you awhile ago about a projector and screen but I just bought an Apple TV 4K 128gb version today. Why is it in multi channel audio rather than Dolby digital for shows and movies? I realize if a movie is in Dolby atmos it’ll be in Dolby atmos
You shouldn't have to be changing things. Just set the settings for the desired configuration and the ATV will output as configured and based on the source content. There really aren't much to the audio settings on the ATV per my prior video.
@@Techthusiasm Yea I changed it back yesterday. I just don’t like how audio is in multi channel unless you’re watching something in atmos. I’m used to having Dolby digital from the Roku ultra
Having multichannel is preferable though. When you output DD, you are needlessly having the box de-encode to PCM then re-encode to lossy DD on the fly.
I have yet to see an app on Apple TV shift down to SDR when running in an HDR mode. Would like to see you demo the RUclips TV app in DV switching down to HDR. - I did try going to DV and it looks like some apps are switching down now to SDR. This was not the case for years and may be due to an ATV update or the apps were finally updated to flag appropriately.
I almost recorded showing RUclips TV shifting down in this video, actually, but I thought it would be too much. I did test it though and it works for me. I could try a few other apps playing SDR content as well and see.
@@Techthusiasm the biggest issue so far is when shifting down to SDR there is a lot of black screens and obviously no notice that you are in SDR. Directv Stream doesn't work but that has been an issue with them since day 1.
I see the same issue for me. I like leaving the ATV in DolbyVision because of the nice menus and screensavers...... but when I'm set to DV and watch things like RUclipsTV or Pluto, the shows look horrible with overbright areas (especially old B/W shows) and the colors look unnatural. If I change the ATV back to SDR they look good for what they are.
I've always had the ATV4K set at 4K SDR with matching range/frame rate set to on. Tried setting it to each of 4K HDR and 4K DV as default (while continuing to have match frame/range on) but I get forced HDR or forced DV when watching SDR content. Which is the reason I set it to 4K SDR default all along. Am I missing something?
SDR really is preferred for most, I think, per my original video. That's because more general use of the box and many apps are SDR by default, so you avoid needless dynamic range switching. After running in DV mode as default after making this video, I have now switched back to SDR default again. I think the whole box experience is just better for me that way. That said, some folks really wanted those screen savers to look better.
@@Techthusiasm Agreed, the previous $K SDR default setting is best. I thought you were suggesting in your video that the matching range feature would automatically switch the content from the default DV setting to SDR for SDR content. But maybe I misunderstood. It definitely continues to force "fake HDR" if left in a default HDR/DV setting
"I thought you were suggesting in your video that the matching range feature would automatically switch the content from the default DV setting to SDR for SDR content." It will actually. I tested this using RUclips TV and it works to match down to SDR. Overall though, I don't feel the experience of using the box and many apps is as smooth with HDR/DV default as with SDR default, so I flipped back. I'm not really personally concerned about screen savers being in HDR.
