- I review, breakdown and explain The Sympathizer episode 2. I discuss the HBO show which stars Robert Downey Jnr set during the Vietnam war in 1975 during the fall of Saigon. I react to The Captain and Bon mourning his wife's death, their decision to frame Major Oanh as being the spy and what the ending means. I compare the show to the book that it is based on and also give my theories and predictions on episode 3.

Very impressed with this show, particularly from a cinematographic point of view (not to mention the choice of music). It just adds so much to an already interesting story! The fact that you cover both cinematographic elements and storytelling in your explainers is therefore also highly appreciated!
This show is literally a 7-hour movie cut in 7 x 1 hr delivery. The first 2 eps are SO rich and dense, but very entertaining at the same time. Can't wait for more!

Im a Vietnamese, I love the book and the movie but everytime they talk in Vietnamese it such a turn off 😢 their accent and the wittiness in the dialogue feel so unnatural for us at home. I can clearly see the Park Chan Wook signature in those and normally i would love that but it just not feel Vietnamese to me. I wish I can somehow turn it off and enjoy the rest lol. I wonder if other countries feel the same whenever American make movies about them?
Yes. I think this was why Shogun was such a treat. Don't get me wrong! This show has been so interesting so far, but the narrative was very much Park Chan Wook style. While in Shogun, they actually wrote the script, translated the dialogues into Japanese the way they would speak, and translate back. It feels so lived in that way.

Based on the views for each sympathizer episode review on RUclips, I don't think this is a show many people watch, although I am enjoying it so far.

I'm bummed there are very little episode reviews because this is a great show, though it is not the type that would win everyone over.
It is a really enjoyable show to watch!
