When you watch this and realise. Your one of the people Neil is talking about... and not in the good half 🤣 Also this series of bike fit videos has been awesome. Some of the best on RUclips I think 👍
Duude, just wanted to say Kudos on what you are doing with the channel. Really useful information especially the attention you give to the outliers. Keep up the good work
Physiologist P.O. Åstrand (1967) put it : "I am convinced that anyone interested in winning Olympic gold medals must select his parents very carefully"
I often wonder if elite endurance athletes have hearts capable of pumping a higher volume of blood, whether it be larger aorta or heart valves that simply can get more oxygen to the muscles.
Hey Cam, love the channel - good mix to technical stuff, satisfying production quality and down-to-earth honesty. I have a question for your bike fitter. Not all cyclists have access to or funds for a bike fitter as skilled as you. What proportion of riders get away with a 'home fit' or just a bike shop 'eyeballing' a bike fit in 10 mins?
I'm just impressed with the freaks who work a tough construction or delivery job in the summer and then manage to show up regularly to the team training ride to haul ass in the heat. I'd be drinking a beer n relaxing at home after a long day of heat stress.
i belive in something called 'mountain poise'; when you go hard but are ready for a long ride. it involves relaxation, therapy, and foresight,, and pain.
Yeah that is why no one has heard of me (Kidding Cat 1 potential maybe, but I didn’t pick my parents well enough) … Since I fucked up my left ankle running, (3rd degree sprain of 2 of the 3 major ankle ligaments, the other one was 2nd degree sprain, as a 20 yo) I couldn’t generate nearly the same power as right leg, later my hips compensated for left ankle and created asymmetry. I could never do more 12 hours of training a week for more than month without some overuse issue popping up. So I totally agree with premise of this video. I wonder if Peter Sagan feels his asymmetry, over the past couple of years I have noticed right knee comes close to top tube, while his left leg tracks much further out, then during his early years at Cannondale.
Your ankle was impeding your bike power, really? Did you do all the one leg pedalling drills etc, single leg dips? Surely you could have addressed that with some physio? Your leg would have atrophied after the injury and naturally favoured the good leg but can't see it needs to be permanent. Might take a year or so to reverse though..
This answers alot for me. I had hip dysplasia as an infant and lived my 1st 6 months in a brace. My right hip joint sits further back in my pelvis making my right leg (seem) shorter. Must be why the short 165 cranks worked for me with the hip angle. Because with anymore than 8 to 10 hrs training 2 weeks in a row (even just base training) woth 170mm cranks ive gone back to with new bike, i get so sore it takes a rest week to recover. And ive had a proper bike fit. Looks like i need to go back to 165 cranks.
Cam - remember if your right hip sits further back in your pelvis, this means that when you roll your pelvis forwards on a bike, that hip's rotational centre is essentially further away from the crank centre than the other hip. This means that the leg will effectively act SHORTER, even though the femur/tibia may be identical, the right leg will require a shim to function properly as that leg is effectively reaching further to the pedal than the left side. I've come across this before - and the shim may need to be pretty big if the acetabulum's relative location is quite different to the other side of the pelvis. If you roll your hips forward really well, the effect is magnified. If you ride really upright, the effect is reduced. Shorter cranks will help, but not fully resolve the problem.
@@neillstanbury4557 i can hold my hands almost completely flat to the floor when bending over, my bike fit was with the 165 cranks, so what ive done is measure from bottom of pedal stroke to tip of saddle at the same bb setback and tilt to achieve same leg extension. When bike fit was done with 165mm cranks(52cm 2018 izalco max 120 stem 5mm spacer) saddle height was set more to the shorter leg. I did question shim but he said it wood be fine, which it was with the 165 lenght, but so far not with the 6000 odd kms with the 170mm.(2020 venge 5mm spacer 120 stem) 167cm tall Thanks for ur reply i appreciate it.
Yip U can't beat genetics no matter what other people say in the comments , U will never be as good as someone who is a genetic freak for the same amount of training , I have seen guys and girls with very little sports background take up cycling and after two years they are as good as someone who has been at it for 10 and I don't mean at a Sunday club run I am talking about at a national level
The whole IT band issue happened with my when I Was running/cycling. With cycling you need to make sure the seat height is correct and make sure to point your foot in the direction it wants to go in, if you point the other way it will pull on your IT band. Running on the other hand, I can't figure that out.
All in the hips. Check out vids on checking for weak hips. The IT band is like a chord and can't be massaged or stretched but will be tightened and aggravated if your hips are out of whack. A week off should also release most of a minor case during which time you can keep riding 👍
Funnize another You Tube content creater has discussed previously the matter of genetics related to cycling performance. Like you his videos are informative and very interesting. Genetics it seems are a significant part of the mix that determine who reaches the top of the sport .
4:29. Agreed. Hesjedal is an example of a man in serious need of a bike fit. "Hesjedal stands at 1.88m (6′ 2″) tall and yet he rides a comparatively tiny 56cm frame. Much of that is based on his extreme position, which includes a gargantuan handlebar drop of over 17cm. Even with the shorter head tube afforded by the downsized frame, Hesjedal still runs a 140mm-long stem with a -17° angle, and even removes the upper headset cover to gain another couple of millimeters." (Bike Radar).
Can do, it will be a few months done the track though. It’s a big job creating well researched content on that topic and I’ve got a few things happening as we speak. But I’ll get to it.
Hi Cam (or anybody else), which is better: the Allez Sprint Comp Disc or the BMC Teammachine SLR02 FOUR? I know the Allez is a better bang for its buck, but wouldn't a carbon bike be better? anybody's opinion works :P
One word Bike-shop ;) test ride, get a bike fit! At least when it is your first time. So easy to get details wrong. Shoes, helmet, bibshort...everywhere you can make a silly error...pay more to pay less...i already payed more. Cheers
I have a functional leg length discrepancy (pelvis twisted). I am already working on it but will use some shims until then. Is this fine or bad practise?

I kind of doubt that most if not all pro's don't stretch/core work. The amount of time on the bike sitting down you have to do stretch and do core work to compensate from sitting on a seat for 30 hours a week. Peter Segan is an elite but also does a lot of core and gym work.
Not sure I agree, this is correlation but not causation. Take Matt Stephens for example, he was working a full time job and still won the British road cycling championship with major asymmetry.

Genetic lottery is not a real thing? People change all the time. When I was a kid guys like this said I was genetically fat but now they say I'm genetically skinny. Everyone just needs a little strength, consistency, and good nutrition in their life.
Your genetics will absolutely define the limits of your performance irrespective of how much/well you train, eat, stretch etc etc. Sorry but it’s just fact. In the same way we cannot all be Einstein or Hawks a no matter how much we study, we can’t all be Pele, Froome, Zion Williams, Babe Ruth and on and on. You can maximise what you have and some people have a lower genetic potential but responder better to training - Trainer Road have some good stuff on that.
Unfortunately Neill is just completely wrong. So out of touch as a physio let alone a bike fitter. Symmetry has been debunked so many times in the injury world. It's sad to see it being promoted. Time for Neill to go and get some education about pain and injuries.

I would love a video on improving flexibility. What I’ve seen is a lot of it revolves around core strength?
Yes! A video showing perhaps a daily routine to help achieve and tolerate a lower more aero position would be so helpful.
Way to keep it interesting Cam. Nice video!

He had a team behind him, who did the measurements
And let EPO do the rest! 💪
