    This worked for me! Thank you!
    It took a couple of tries to get it perfectly flat. Here are some tips:
    • Fully pop out the two side panel pieces, not just halfway. This helps when positioning the tire.
    • Remove the spare tire from the bag, place it in position, and then all panels back.

      Good tips. I was able to keep the spare in the case but it is easier if you take it out.

    • @geteducatedbyTed
      @geteducatedbyTed  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@Shaojeemy At first yes the front panel cover seemed to stick up a small amount. I actually put my portable charger, the adapters and a jacket so the front of the spare tire goes up a bit, this seems to level out the trunk. Another thing you can try is to rotate the tire and see if maybe the cover is narrower.

    THANK YOU very much for this solution. Been carrying my Modern spare for a year. Incidentally, I got my first puncture yesterday. Perfect timing as I pulled into home.
    It was a self tapping panel screw. So I was able to plug it successfully.
    We are so lucky to have Modern Spares, I was hunting for a 2t Jack to carry in the car, let alone a suitable spare that worked. Although I am in New Zealand Modern Spare were wonderfully helpful. Several months after getting my Model 3, Model Y's became available (X Shanghai) I traded Model 3 for the Y.
    Modern Spare just sold me the correct tyre for the Model Y, the Rim is the same as the M3.

    By far the best way I've seen for fitting the modern spare in the trunk (with not needing to cut). Took some readjusting the way the foam pushes back / enables the tire to sit, but in the end got it to sit pretty flat (and accomplished the vital goal of the wife not being able to notice, especially with a trunk floor mat on top). Also have the mobile charger and a couple blankets holding up the tire a touch. Being wintertime in my location, using a heat gun on the foam helped getting it a bit more pliable and being able to adjust.

    May I make a suggestion? Find a way to secure the spare with a strap or something so it can't move. I once watched a you lady driving a car hit a pole at a decent speed...the unsecured doughnut spare in her trunk was ejected through the trunk (popped it open) and went rolling down the street. It was shockingly destructive. She didn't roll it either.

    Just to confirm, the carpet cover would sit flat over the tire then? I've seen a couple of other RUclips videos where they have to chop sections of the interior out to get the tire to sit so the carpeted floorboard rests flat.

    Thank you for your sharing your solution for storing a spare tire in the Model Y. My Modern Spare tire just arrived today. I tried to fold the shallow part of the sub-trunk, but it does not fold enough no matter how hard I tried. How did you do that?

    • @geteducatedbyTed
      @geteducatedbyTed  5 месяцев назад +1

      By the shallow part, I think you mean the area closest to the hatch lock. That has very little to squeeze. You have to push back the hard foam that is closest to the back seats.

    • @nebularealm
      @nebularealm 5 месяцев назад +1

      I managed to fold the shallow part of the sub-trunk by following Ted's technique. My spare tire did not come with the cover, so the tire had a lot of friction on the bottom of the shallow sub-trunk. I found an Ikea plastic bag that was large enough to cover half of the spare tire. I pushed the spare tire and was able to wedge it in. It looks really good after installing the trim, the trunk cover, and the trunk floor mat. Your solution is genius, Ted. I now feel much better knowing that my Model Y has a spare tire and it is out sight. I will be storing the large sub-trunk container in a safe place.

      @@nebularealm I'm sure you've looked but Amazon sells very inexpensive covers for tires. I found one with a very long velcro section where the tread would rest. That allows you to fit various size tires in it and then pull tight for a proper fit.

    Does deflating the spare make it any easier? Inflate when needed

    • @geteducatedbyTed
      @geteducatedbyTed  8 месяцев назад +2

      No I asked Modern Spare and the tire really does not compress much. It may help if you take ~ 10 psi or so out. However, you don't want the tire completely deflated as it will deform.

  • @trex2092
    @trex2092 5 месяцев назад

      The Modern Spare fits tightly in the sub trunk. The only way I would see it coming out is if you were in a roll over accident. If you want, you can tie the tire down or put a strap across it. If you are in the bay area, I'd be happy to show you my setup.
