I think one thing that could’ve been noted to remind people that own a Tesla that would consider getting spare tire, is to make sure to review the owners manual to see where on the four entry points (next to each tire) to jack up the car so you don’t potentially puncture the battery underneath or the side panel. There’s a hole under each four entry points that can be used for an adapter to slip into.
Tesla should offer it as an extra
Good advice about if driving in mountains and no cell service, u need to take care of yourself.
Nice. I made my own spare tire as well for my Model S. I bought the donut rim from BMW for a reasonable price. Then, I found an unused donut spare at a junk yard that had the right dimensions for the Model S. I had the tire from the junk spare put on the BMW rim, and vwalla... my own spare tire. It cost me just over $100.
@@steve-fy4pk I looked up the bolt pattern on the Tesla forum. It was actually someone other than me who figured out what size donut would be. Info was also on the forum.
@@steve-fy4pk yes. The spare does fit my Model S, and probably all of that model and the X.
why did you skip the jack? it's important to see how good it is, and hope it's not disposable 😉
also compact/expanding tyres are even better
I’m a single woman I appreciate this video so much!!!!! Thank you. I just ordered my Tesla model Y
Many european car brands uses this type of tire as a spare. Less space in the trunk and you can't exceed 80km/h with that tire. Congratz for the channel! It's great!
Paulo Ramos Fernandes thats True with the spare Tire. For the Channel you are wrong, this guy is just bullshiting don‘t even get facts right.
Brian, great vid. A couple of things, the Y kit uses a T145/85R18 tire. The "T" is a temporary tire, these should never be used for anything other than limping home or to a garage. Modern lists the tire speed rating as 81 mph max, while TireRack says 50 mph max (wonder if Modern has confused the European manufacturers spec sheet showing 81 kph max speed which would be 50 mph)? Modern lists only one size for the Y with a 27.7" rolling diameter. That's an ok match for the "square" 19 or 20 wheel options on the LR and Perf (each has a 27.9" rolling diameter), but it doesn't work with the Perf Upgrade with staggered 21 inch (the rears are a 28.6 rolling diameter). That would have one rear wheel during 20 more revs per mile, and you certainly wouldn't want to do that for long.
That makes sense ...I definitely wouldn’t trust that little guy @ 80mph
This guy knows his tires lol
I waited the entire video to see if it would fit in the frunk or the sub trunk but you didn't demo that, please show us how close it is to fitting or if there are any other possible storage ideas. Thanks.
Same!

@@PreauxGaming same! seems like he left the most important stuff out... left me with blue balls
The same here.
Over a year and this question was never answered!
This is an especially great option if you know you're taking a long road trip. No better way to screw up your timing on a road trip than to have a flat on the side of the road that you spend hours trying to fix because you're in the middle of nowhere.
I definitely recommend to anyone that's planning long road trips to figure out some way to carry some type of spare tire with you even if if it's a cheap donut style that's better than nothing.
I like the fact that this tire is not just a donut spare, and that you can run regular highway speeds and not worry about it.
That kitten was awesome 😎
If only the sub-trunk was large enough to hold a spare...
Rob Ostry yes if the frunk was shaped to hold a spare, that would be the best.
Ben Seibel I want that!
I wonder if you got a modified trunk liner if it would fit.
@@jayj6770 The lower trunk fits in between the rear bumper and the electric motor/gearbox. There just isn't room to modify that area to accommodate a spare wheel/tire.
@@jayj6770 l PO
Carry a plug kit also. You can fix tread punctures. The majority of problems.
It would be more appealing if there was somewhere to actually store the spare, or at least secure it. Otherwise you have a tire slamming around in your trunk all the time, and in the event of an accident it could be a very dangerous projectile.
In the model 3 or model Y it could either be stored in the frunk or the under trunk storage compartment.
@@CL-gq3no they don't fit in the funk or lower trunk in the model 3, and there is no place for hooks to strap it down either.
JFlywheel pity the frunk wasn’t designed to be more round to accommodate a spare ! Would probably need components to be re-arranged.
Model Y has considerably deeper Frunk and deeper Trunk compartment than model 3. Anyone know if it might fit at an angle? Not efficient but nice to know if it would.
Really ,projectile ? Is your trunk made out of paper mâchè ?? Your talking non sense ,your cellphone inside your car is far more of a dangerous projectile then the spare tire inside the trunk
I purchased this exact spare tire kit after having two flats last year on my Model 3. One a screw through the sidewall and another 3 months later a blowout of unknown cause.
Was stranded both times. Luckily for me I have never had to use the spare tire, but feel lots safer now.
It sucks that most EVs don’t come with a spare but I love this option. I would like to see EV makers offer the option of either having a “frunk” or a spare tire. I will definitely check this out. Thanks.
My 2004 Corvette Z06 did not come with a spare. Many modern cars do not. It did come with some tire slime sealant and a small air pump. Never had to use it though. My 2021 Chevy Bolt did not come with a spare. But I added a donut spare from a Ford Mustang. The. Added a jack and all needed tools, plus a tire plug kit and two small compressors. I used it once and it worked great. Glad I had it.
great company to deal with, saw a video about them and the next day ordered mine. Excellant package and so glad i got one for my Model X
Can you do a follow-up video showing why a spare can't fit under the floor of the trunk?
I waited the entire video to see if it would fit in the frunk or the sub trunk but you didn't demo that, please show us how close it is to fitting or if there are any other possible storage ideas. Thanks.
I broke down in Colorado the mountains! Friday at dusk no cell phone reception....I called 911 they called AAA...then they dropped by at dark to see if I was ok...They reminded me to stay in the car as there are bears right beside me in the woods...!! Yikes. AAA came got me fixed Thanks for kind cops!
This will be one of my accessories I buy, in town I’ll leave it in my garage. Will only carry it on long road trips. Of course I’ll add some sort of tarp t8 hold the dirty flat tire, flashlight, work gloves and safety road triangle. If I get a flat on a road trip and Tesla Road Side Assistance can’t respond quickly or I’m near my destination this is a great option.
You need to actually really physically remove the actual deflated (flat) tire.
That is the key. How will you fit a 3 1/2" tall emergency scissor jack in the 2 1/2" remaining ground clearance?
I am seeing this video as I have a flat. Frustrating experience knowing teslas don’t have run flat. No standard repair kit with the car. The road side assistance does not work in Sunday’s. I drove my MYLR from Bay Area to San Diego and had a flat in Simi Valley. Any towing option AAA, Geico, tesla roadside will drive you to a tire repair shop. What do you do if it happens at 6 pm like in our case? This spare tire is a must. The last flat I had was 10 years ago but I had a spare. This time it was not fun travelling with my family and the dog. Tesla roadside assistance you let me down. There has to be a 24 hour on-site tire repair service. Without it all the route mapping is pretty much useless.
I have a model YP just got my second set of Pirelli P Zeros at 23,000 miles, front tires were at 50% at rears were almost slicks, did not realize how bad they were until I got on floor to fix a hole the day before I replaced tires.
In the Australian countryside you are often many many kilometres from assistance, so this should come in handy if only for peace of mind.
Great video and nice product, but I'm more concerned about the weight of the vehicle on those tires. Teslas are very heavy vehicles, I want to see what it would be like under the weight of the car.
Great job on the video. I just thinking about the I3 when the video started.
Very interesting video....congratulation...good option for travelers.
You mean especially the front caliper. Rear brakes are never as large as the front as the front does 80% of the total braking.
I can't imagine two different size tires on the same transaxle doing any good they will be rotating at different speeds
Thanks for the great advice.
Would using runflat tires also de a good solution?
Thanks for the reminder that mothers day is May 10
Never mind, I clicked on your link to see the jack.
Can of Fix-a-Flat? Would be more efficient for a puncture... take up less space and will not affect the TPMS... Just a thought 💭
I think you should get three more and do an efficiency test :-). Imagine if that were a city only tire option!
I didn’t know that 1/3 of new Cars
don’t come with spare tires
2/3 of new cars come with spare tires? Ah geez that's pretty good
You do now!!
Shows how often you need one then.
@@nickbaker4857 No, it shows how often the OP buys new cars. He may drive 15 year old cars.
I don’t know any new cars that come with spares with the invention of the run flat tires that’s seemingly in a lot of vehicles. I purchased a 2012 BMW X5 and mine didn’t come with a spare. My grandmother just recently bought a new Nissan Altima and she doesn’t have a spare either.
Why does Tesla not have run flats?
Great video. This would be awesome for road trips etc. I wouldn't want to carry the extra weight for my daily commute or to the grocery store, a compressor is just fine for shorter trips and most slow punctures.
You should get four of those and drive them on a road trip to see the improved efficiency.
Nice video! However, Never Ever Put Feet Under Vehicles
@i1Tesla, great product find. Did you try to see if it will fit in the trunk lower compartment? I was waiting to see if it would or not, but maybe at an angle would it go under?
I bought one of these for my M3 last year and keep it in the trunk. Had issues with is sliding around so attached a couple velcro strips on it and now it sticke to the carpet trunk floor lining and does not move. Def saw a couple mile range reduction by having the extra weight. But trade off is peace of mind.
Bought a Modern Spare for my model y after getting a flat tire far from home on a holiday weekend - what a nightmare! Nobody but Tesla had these tires. This video was informative except did not address the most important problem - jacking your car up on side of road using the Modern Spare jack. It SHOULD have the pin that fits into one of the four jack holes on the Tesla, but it doesn’t. Instead you have to hope it works with the puck or hope it doesn’t slip while jacking. The spare, carrying case, and tools are nice, just needs a Tesla specific jack. Also the Modern Spare really stinks your car up like plastic and rubber. There is no room in a Model Y for it except in the back.
The Modern Spare doesn't fit into Y's frunk?
The modern spare is the same diameter as the regular tires, just thinner. So no, it doesn't fit in the frunk, or below the rear cargo area floor. It takes up a large portion of the rear cargo area. Hopefully it would not come forward and hit passengers in the event of a hard rear impact. On closer look at the Modern Spare's jack, it appears to have a rubber block on top that may engage with the Tesla's jack point, which is a hole about 1/2 in diameter. Better than I thought.

The required 129ft lbs lug torque is 30% more than most people are used to. I'd be concerned most won't have the strength to properly tighten
The round rubber thing is the Tyre and the centre metal bit is a Wheel...just saying..🙄..😄
I thought the center metal thing is rim. The 2 things together is a wheel. :)
@@motofan16
The Rim is the edge of the Wheel.. here on the UK...and I think we invented it...😂
I think you're mistaking the bigger wheel in the rear for bigger breaks. I've never see bigger breaks in the rear(physics/inertia). I would assume they would clear the fronts also.
I wanted to see how you set the jack
What about the tire size and how it works on the differential? There may be a limit of speed and distance you can go with this overall diameter size difference. You might want to question Tesla about this spare.
WERRY KOOL_____also love the 'Tesla'(?) roof-racks!!!!
Thanks Brian (y?) for the tip___might have to get one for my CYBRTRK when l'm out in the Simpson Desert, Hey!

Great Video. Nice option to have for long road trips, especially time sensitive trips where you can’t wait 2 hrs for help to arrive. Thanks for this.
Very true!
That's why your should get Run-Flat-Tires . One can still drive up to 55MPH on a flat tire.
How often do you get flats? more expensive and they make for a louder, harsher ride, don't they?
Yea, but at least I 'm not pulling over on the highway in the middle of a Snow storm trying to fix a flat. So it is worth every penny !
Thanks Brian
You bet!
A 135/90-10 would match the Model Y OEM size in diameter but skinny. I don't think that size tire exists however, so to get the diameter right you'd basically need a full size spare.
The 135/80-18 is 1.2 inches, 4.5% too small for the Y.
Great product!
Thanks will purchase ot
Brian, An important question... Does the Bandit Front License Plate Holder fit on the Model Y? lol
Also, great video. Thanks for the introduction to a complete spare tire kit for my Y.
Maybe you could add a link for a portable air charger that you like. I would imagine that the spare would need to have it's pressure checked and topped off in a pinch.
Hi Brian, I am from Montreal Qc and I also bought this spare tire from modern spare tire from my trip I was suppose to make this summer to ?New Orleans Louisiana that I had to cancel because of that F......k corona virus. So perhaps next I will reschedule my trip . Take care Brian
I like that the tyre has the English spelling "Tyre"
More concerned about the 129lb/ft of torque, most rotors would be "bowing" at this point and wearing away your brake pads. I would like to understand the reason for such a high value. Also you are going to need a cheater bar of some description to break 129lb/ft of torque. I checked my One week old Tesla Y and they broke at around 85lb/ft, which is what a normal vehicle would be.

I just bought 1 for my model Y awd after watching your video. They sent me this T 145/85 R 18 . Is this the right one for my 19” ?
You know some models tire size is wrong.
I have 19 prius prime looked @ it 2 buy saw they have it for 17". Prius prime has 15".
Our other car 23 KN SPORTAGE PHEV is 18" but our model is 19". So not all model is same size. U should check the tire size before buying it.
What about model X?
Can you Test how the consumption is with 4 of this tyres?
Hi there, follow your videos and they are super useful info. Have a question. Will a Performance Model 3 20" wheels work on a Model Y that is non performance. Are the bolt pattern same?
What is the tire size of a 20" Model Y
Note: There is a missing ring to center the wheel.
Using the bolts to center the wheel is not enough.
I prefer the bimmerzone spare which provide a center ring.
The Modern Spare kit does not require a hub-centric ring because it was designed specifically for the Tesla (according to the Modern Spare rep that I worked with). The Bimmerzone spare that you have works fine, but the wheel itself is a repurposed Ford Mustang spare rim, so it benefits from having the hub-centric ring on a Tesla.
Any chance spare could fit in under- compartments/frunk ?
no
Awesomenes video
OOOOOOHHHHHHH! Shade at the BMW i3. Bahahahaha! It's true though, it does look a lot like a BMW i3 tire.
How about Mentioning the price please.
I had the same question on my Model 3-ModernSpare...would it fit!?! Thx for covering this. Now I’m curious if I can just swap the spare tire to match the size of the Model Y. Stay safe!
Nice!
I still believe that this car is way too heavy to ride on a spear.
Do you need to have the Tesla Jack pads to jack it up?
Keep these great videos coming Brian! How do you take off the lug nut cover on the 21" Uberturbine wheels?
There is a pin hole I stuck a small allen wrench in and pulled it off.
Oh thank god....
Aha dolly wheel, most cars in the EU have them your limited to 60mph because the tyres are not balanced so handling is effected quite badlly. It literally the electric ones that don't. This is to increase range thou
Have one, so far have t had to use it.
Range test on 4 of those spares???
Will this fit in model S? I see that there are two sets of holes
Will it fit in the Frunk?
hello how is your day
where do you get the jack?
I noticed they only have one size spare do all 3 Tesla rim options = the same size ?
hmmm... i wonder what the energy consumption would be with 4 of those tires?????
will the tire fit in the frunk?
How about storage, where would it fit in the Tesla particularly the Model S (would it fit in the frunk)?
Will the tire fit in the bottom compartment of the trunk ?
No
Hi guys is it possible to fit front or back trunk ( underfloor ) if the tyre size is 18-in . In Europe so many places without the phone signal . Many thanks Peter 😀😀
Did you use the Tesla jack points so you don't screw up the battery? I have no idea how you would jack it up without these.
You mean that we don’t have to be babes in wild if we do a little preparation
How mush was it
Do you have a link for a recommended portable jack to store in the Tesla?
Doe's the package fit in the Model Y underfloor trunk well?
No
i1Tesla What about front? Or what’s the best place in the car to keep it in your opinion?
I have a Model 3 AWD with 18" tires and the 18 in Modern spare. If I buy a model y AWD with 19 in tires, can I use it or will it screw up the motors?
is it rated for 1500lbs corner weight? teslas are as heavy as most full size pickup trucks
Rather, what does it's jack look like?
Will this fit a MODEL 3 P?
Hey Brian, have you found any Bluetooth 2.4ghz TPMS sensors that works on the model Y?
hi about bolt on brake fit over holes
so what happens when you try and drive with a different diameter tire on one side of 1 axle? Are you sure the driveline likes that? and doesnt suffer any damage or trip any malfunction indicators? especially on 2 motor (frt and rear) models?
I did just that on my Chevy Bolt….. put a smaller diameter donut spare on my front drive axle after a tire blew. Car did not like that. All kinds of error messages but driving not affected. What I should ah e done was put the donut on the rear axle and moved a rear tire to the front drive axle and avoided all the errors and dash warning lights. But on a Tesla AWD that’s not possible some both axles are Drive axles. Best solution is a full size spare to avoid and damage to car drive train.
I didn’t hear you mention if it had a n 81 mph speed rating.
