  • I made everything work and solidified myself so now I could do the things that I’ve always wanted to do.” Filmmaker Tyler Perry discusses why he held on to the script for “A Jazzman’s Blues” for 27 years, how he’d sneak into theater shows when he was younger and the encouraging advice he received from playwright August Wilson, and why he’ll never leave the character of “Madea” behind. #DailyShow #Comedy

I'd love to see her origin story and how she became who she is from who she was and when she met mister brown, had and raised Cora, I feel it would be hilarious. I am so glad to have seen this interview. I teach a World Lit class to a group of older African-American students, and we talked about the ancient roots of poetry and epics and theatrical drama, including reading Medea. As always when I say, Medea, they think MAdea, and it opens up the conversations about "literature" and art. It is always a wonderful discussion because the ancient Greek play Medea was HATED by the "critics" and yet now we assign it in courses all across America.
I have never seen Madea movies and they probably wouldn't resonate with me, but what Tyler Perry has built on Madea's big strong shoulders is art and access, and he is incredible and deserves all praise. Madea movies might not be considered "high art", but they are meaningful and Madea is probably one of the most important movie characters of the last 20 years or so, because of what she has meant and how Tyler Perry has built himself up as an artist. I look forward to watch "A Jazzman's Blue"
