    This was a recall item in pre-2011 engines, well documented online and how to preemptively fix it by replacing the tensioner for the chain or check to see if it was fixed. When I was shopping for a tiguan I came upon this issue and opted to get a 2018 model. If people aren't going to research their used cars, at least dont keep driving on a check engine light. 🤣 Also, plug fouling is probably from running regular in a premium preferred engine.

      yes, and I believe I stated so in the video. I hope everyone avoids this problem by changing their Chain (and related parts) preemptively as you suggest. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video.

      Yeah I pulled ancient plugs out of our 2011 that had almost 100k on them and they were whitish and clean, not black and fouled like this, I only run shell 91 religiously because it’s the only fuel near me that has 0% ethanol and it’s the only gas that’s given me no trouble with my aftermarket tuned cars. I would bet it’s cheap gas too.

    Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, my next door neighbor bought a 2011 Tiguan with 231k miles for their teenage daughter. After just 3 months of ownership she limped the car into the driveway after horrible engine misfire and vibration. We worked on it today and I think the timing slipped and the engine is toast.

    • @CoolAirVw
      @CoolAirVw  4 года назад +3

      If its still running I doubt the pistons smacked the valves. It can jump one teeth or so and still run although badly since the timing is off.

    • @Jushwa
      @Jushwa 2 года назад +2

      Yeah I remember our 2010 limped in driveway, I scanned it for codes, got the cam shaft errors etc, I cranked it anyway to try and start it not knowing what I was about to do and smacked all the valves into the pistons with the starter, you could hear the metal on metal clanging.
      We replaced it with a 2011 with the same tensioner issue. The only difference is this time I’ve been the one changing the oil & more frequently, and the car has made it another 50k longer than the previous one, it’s also about 7 years older and was purchased used too. The 2010 we had from new and was only maintained at the dealer. Engine blew at 107k Kms. VW paid for a replacement engine but my brother wrote off the car a week later. When the engine grenaded itself it was about a week after the car had just had a turbo replaced. When I checked the oil level after the engine smacked valves there was no oil. I’m guessing the dealer did the turbo and maybe forgot to do the oil after. This wouldn’t be the first time the dealer screwed up. The last time the car had the intake replaced for the recall they left the high pressure fuel line loose and it was spraying fuel everywhere. Lucky the car didn’t catch fire.

    • @CoolAirVw
      @CoolAirVw  2 года назад

      Do you know the letter code of your engine? Might be a BPY engine?? BPY will NOT interchange with later CCT from Tig. Radically different engines despite same displacement. Cheapest repair would be head repair after valve crash due to chain fail. Changing engine is labor intensive (expensive) and those engines run very high from salvage yards.

    I’ve been looking for a video on this exact topic. My sister has a like new 2009 Tiguan, 80,000 miles. It’s been sitting in her garage since October 2016. She’s giving it to me. I hope it’s just the tensioner. Can anyone give an estimate for this complete job and one with just the tensioner replacement. Thx
    THE DIAGNOSIS FOUND CODES:
    P0011, P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0506, P130A, P1297

    • @CoolAirVw

      If the car wont start its probably not just the tensioner. If it still runs and has those codes maybe. We used to offer simple tensioner replacement, but then a few that we tried ended up having so mush slop in the chain that the tensioner was all the way extended and the chain still had slop. The tensioner, chain and guides need replaced at 100k or the chain will fail and pistons could smack the valves.

She had it towed in, the dealership techs pulled the codes I listed above, but said the needed $1,200 more for a diagnosis.
