As per Shimla agreement, the international border between India and Pakistan was declared till Point NJ9842. Between point NJ9842 and Karakoram Pass is the Siachen Glacier which holds a high geopolitical value as it separates Pakistan border from the China border. This was a strategically important mission to capture Bilafond La, Gyong La, Indira Col and Sia La in the Saltoro Ridge. In August 1984, India also captured Gyong La and thus regained control over entire Siachen.
