  • Throughout the Batman canon, Gotham City is full of corruption. But is a vigilante superhero really its best response? Is Batman actually the best solution?
This video dives into the history of Gotham, including the mysterious Court of the Owls. It also asseses the real-world cities Gotham is based on and its most pressing problems - such as gentrification, drugs, and a corrupt police force.
For more on zoning policy and NIMBYISM, see: NIMBYism vs. Gentrification: The Truth About the Housing Crisis
Then we ask: Is Gotham’s greatest hero also its greatest threat? And if Batman is busy fighting super villains, what other solutions could Gotham City employ to dig out of its misery?

Wow, can't believe you managed to tie in so many issues into Batman. But you're right, like Gotham, we are the architects of our own failures, and because of status quo bias, complacency, and corruption, can't leave it up to others to make a change when we have the power to start making that change. Being a Billionaire helps magnify one's possible impact, but small actions add up. Change starts with the individual

Now more seriously i would love to see this plan combined with the hard struggle of Bruce striking back against that grim clown that has been wearing his skin for most of his life.

I hope you do more of these, I've always taken for granted the setting of Gotham and just enjoyed the movies, I never thought of asking why Gotham's so bad. XD

Replacing Batman's methods of dealing with the psychotic mass murderers with the Punisher's methods would probably help too. Just sayin'.

This is a good well thought out video about Gotham. It connects issues well but there's one problem I have with this video. It mentions that Bruce Wayne should do more charitable work and invest in infrastructure. He already does this in the comics but for some bizarre reason it doesn't seem to stick. I think the real reason why Gotham is portrayed as insanely corrupt despite all of Bruce Wayne's best efforts is due to the writers inability to fathom progress in Gotham. Any time Bruce Wayne starts a charitable program or builds a medical center it doesn't seem to stop crime despite the obvious benefits. Even when villains do reform they always wind up reverting back to villains despite their best efforts to be good. Again, it's the fault of the writers who have to stick to some status quo that prevents any progression in Gotham.

With how easy the regular civilians in comics get powers, I wouldn't be surprised if a large number of them gained powers or survived the explosion.

Not all drugs are equal. Heroin and meth are not in the same league as cigarettes and marijuana. Not all should be legalized anymore than all laws should be abolished. Some drugs can hurt others as it causes mania and endangers others.

But it is not the government's right or their responsibility to protect people from themselves. That way inevitably leads to tyranny, as many have pointed out before. Legal drugs do far more harm than the illegal ones and people will always do what they want to do; that's what they call freedom, I believe. Taking away that freedom is, by definition, oppression.

@@yuki-sakurakawa I never harmed anyone or strained public services while high, never endangered or harassed anyone either. Not saying this to approve of people using drugs, but I don't believe it is my place or right to judge them for it, nor anyone else's; let alone a government who can't even balance a budget. Millions are incarcerated every year for possession of drugs which definitely affects public services in a very negative way, despite the fact many of these people harm no one other than themselves and every person has the right to harm/pleasure themselves if it harms no one else. Will they begin arresting cutters next? Masochists? Will BDSM become illegal next? We all know the reason they make many things illegal are so they can arrest many people who are otherwise law abiding citizens and make money off of their incarceration. Should it be regulated? Yes, much like alcohol and tobacco is.
