Thank you Joel and Nikki for taking time out of your honeymoon to film and present the stunning house and estate where you stayed. I loved the way that nature was allowed to do its thing and all the happy accidents that resulted. The Douglas fir was truly mind blowing and the views were to die for! I loved all the moss and ferns growing in the walls and the fallen trees. It has taken me 3 sessions to view this epic but so well worth it - I love all your videos but this one took it up a notch!
Watching this over a few nights. Delayed gratification is my thing💚

Me too Keith! I'd like to live there whatever species I was to be honest - an absolute dream setting and no guessing why this house was built where it was with those views. It's been in the same family for a few hundred years and the gardens much older than the "newer" (!) house ☺

You're very welcome Karl, we'd wandered around different parts and both agreed that it needed to be shared with everyone, and a great excuse to just chill out, take even more of it in and for me to talk about it all too - took us 2 days and of course not every inch is covered but we wanted to get the best bits in for everyone and to demonstrate that, whatever sized garden you have, there is something for everyone - wish I had a garden big enough for that magnificent Douglas Fir near to the end (spoiler alert! 🤣) but just to be able to see all this fabulous habitat was great and this video such a nice memory for both of us too ☺ Thankfully, YT means that this can be digested in chunks but I do hope you enjoy it and that it feels like you're wandering around with me. I have to laugh, you are just like me when you suddenly veer off course because you’ve seen a butterfly or dragonfly, I think we need T-shirts which say ‘easily distracted by insects’ on them 😂😂. The loch looks very inviting, were there any Osprey about? It looks like an ideal habitat for them.
Make the T shirts, I'll buy one! 🤣

At 30.17 the plant with the dark leaves and small yellow flowers is Lysimachia Ciliata (Firecracker).
That was fabulous Joel. What a gorgeous place it was very good of you to take time to film it for us. As you point out it had such diverse ecologies cattering for many different forms of wildlife. Great to see such sensitivity in how they are managing the land. What a honeymoon!

We had a -4C Frost this morning. The deer on the hill country have just completed the rut so it is all quiet again! What a lovely late autumn day. The sun is cracking the flags in a sky of blue. We so enjoy your posts of Wilding your gardens. The joys of nature in a world of madness.

I just finished this film, feel like I just finished a tour. I would not say it's a garden, it is huge as a forest. Happy that I walked through the forest with a cool guide and could learn many things in the forest 😊

My goodness, there are no adequate words to describe this most beautiful place. Nature has filled it to the brim with treasures in each and every direction. Absolutely stunning and uninterrupted views, which looked like an absolute dream. Such an array of flora and fauna wherever you should look. Absolutely breathtaking this was. What a wonderful walk to be taken on. I was so immersed I really did feel like I was there, and I can promise you this was a place I really didn't want to leave behind. You and Nikki did a fantastic job of taking us around with you. Thank you so very much for this heavenly experience. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful💜
P.s I absolutely luv hoverflies. I luv to follow them around the garden so that I can macro them when they land. I find them really beautiful. I could never forget them💚

Hi! Sorry for confusion here but this was beginning of July 2023, so you're right in thinking that they're about 2-3 weeks behind. We'd walked most of the grounds but were so in awe we decided that everyone else should get to see it too, and it was no hardship doing it again - we really were blessed with good weather :) Thank you, so much - best wishes, Joel

I really love these recordings....
An absolute epic. I’ve always imagined going on a long walk with you finding butterflies and other flora and fauna. Imagine no more. Too much to comment on but a random fact I know is that the beautiful white Plume moth uses bind weed as its larval food plant. So as annoying as it can be it does have its place in the ecosystem. Oh and I’ve never seen a Dark Green Fritillary before so thank you for that. Regards Keith

Years ago I spent my first honeymoon in Oban sadly for 2 weeks it rained but remember it has the only bridge across the Atlantic and a rare sedum growing on the stone
I remember seeing 2 Islands in a loch called Eighh and Mucch and a very old pub called Tigh and Truish forgive the spelling
It was great to see that both purple and yellow loosestrife both not related growing in just damp ground I have introduced both these in my wilded front meadow

It's a spectacular place, could be so much more formal and without a thought to the wildlife, but so refreshing to see such ancient grounds that have been a wonderful home for wildlife for many many years. Glad that you enjoyed this Rebecca - best wishes, Joel

Hey Steve, yes... but on speaking with a family member, in his late 80s, it takes a lot of looking after and although absolutely beautiful to look at, it takes a lot of work and of course money - the last lady to occupy this lived there on her own, until aged 95! @WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I could imagine the grounds are easily a full time job at least. Would love to have the money to be able to buy such a beautiful estate, must be wonderful to be a steward to a property like that.
@@stevehiggins1263 Me too Steve, me too - when you get a chance to watch it (thankfully YT means you don't have to sit it out in one go 🤣) you'll see the extent of it all, the age of the house means they have to keep on top of it. Some very famous people in that family over the many years the house has stood there, still not as old as the gardens but just incredible to see - it really is a paradise. Nice to see these spiderweb-like mosses in the trees.
Right next to our bathroom window we have a hawthorn who has these kind of fuzzy things as well.
I'm only realising now that they must be likens (?).

Hey Joel! What a place! It was lovely to wander around and see so many amazing habitats. The Douglas fir was the highlight for me, absolutely stunning! I too would have been compelled to climb it. Lovely to learn the names of some of the plants and see how a wild garden looks when it gets to that age. Many more things on my wish list now, including the house. Wow! Can't wait to see the next tour, the arts and crafts movement is my favourite so there might be some influence on the old house. Great video! Best wishes.
Hello there! It certainly was complete respite for both of us, and I'm so glad you enjoyed this - lengthy but worth it I think. I'd love that house, I couldn't film inside but if you search Achnacloich and find the website there are some photos of the inside, definitely up your street! Nikki too is a love of the Arts & Crafts and the house we are going back to in a few weeks (when the garden is looking it's best) will also be up your street, not as grand as this one by any means but definitely arts and crafts, two turrets as well, although they're just about standing. Nikki knew this house since childhood and it was sought after by many people, but for the wrong reasons (development!) and she was so relieved when the neighbour bought it after it became too much for the elderly occupant, and this neighbour is very into wildlife so decided that it would just sit there - it's not in anyone's way and even in the condition it currently is, not an eyesore where it is located. Really looking forward to this one and hopefully interviewing the neighbour if he is ok with that :) Very best wishes, as always - Joel

The Deep pink dark eyed Geranium is Anne Thomson, it has wonderful lighter foliage. The one you mentioned as looking like Wargrave pink is Geranium x oxonianum 💚

Fairly sure that the orange flower spike at 1h 16min is Bog Asphodel just coming into flower.
Loving this video - it feels like I'm there too. It's brightening up my lunch break in 30 min chunks over 6 days.
I had no idea that rhododendron could get that large, or Douglas Fir for that matter. What a magnificent tree. I would love to spend time sitting under it, just appreciating it (yes I'm a tree hugger). Also, belated congrats on the marriage!

I was thinking I'd have to watch this video in a few parts, but being a tree lover I just couldn't switch off. Watched in its entirety, and a great way to spend Sunday evening.
I have no words for that absolutely magnificent Douglas Fir. That tree must have seen so much in its time, amazing.
It's been about 15yrs since we were up there in Scotland and this has made me want to visit again.
On a side note have you heard about recent research suggesting trees and plants are sentient beings. That they are actually aware of you when you approach and are even aware of colours. Interesting reading.

The plant at 1:16:00 is Bog Asphodel. Quite common in Upland bogs and heaths.

The plant with the large leaves is Rogersii I think
I have bindweed that comes from under my fence so what I do is train it up the tree each year and it looks beautiful later on when it's just tumbling all the way up and through the tree in flower

I have a gunnera next to my pond! But it is planted in a pot as it won’t survive outside in the winter! So no lake for me ☺️
@15:40 Could possibly be Sorbaria Sorbifolia (Sem) or false spirea? I have some in planters at home an have moved a few to our cottage, hoping they will establish in the garden.
So interesting, what scientists called "novel" ecosystems -- i.e. created by humans -- don't usually have a chance to get this old!
