  • We climbed to the top of Greece, the Mytikas peak of Olympus, in October 2017. We started at the Gortsia trailhead and stayed at Refuge B (Apostolidis).
It was snowing the day before and we didn't think we'd make it to the top. But the sun was on our side and we had an amazing experience hiking and scrambling to the top!

Hot air balloons are difficult to control for direction and hold in one place. The winds, turbulence on Everest would move the balloon all over the place. Crashing into mountains would also be a 'small' risk maybe.

What month of year did you do your trek. I am heading on 24th June this year. Just considering weather you had looked cold, rain at times on video. Thanks

Well done getting that far, but would of put my poles in bergen before attempting that scramble. Sure you know this.

Did you book the refuge or just show up?

We booked. There was loads of room on the day we went so it probably would have been fine to just turn up but I'd definitely recommend booking, it was easy to do.

Hello, are you a frequent hiker? Is very hard to get to the Muses Plateau? What about Mitikas, is it dangerous to get to the very top? Do you get down from Mitikas the same route you gone up?

Hiya! We are semi-frequent hikers, we like a good mountain but we don't get out as much as we'd like. I'd say getting to the muses plateau was fairly straightforward and you just need to be generally fit (stick to the main route, don't go the way we did, it was pointlessly steep and slowed us down).
Mitikas is a scramble, borrow helmets from the refuge as there's a risk of rockfall. It was my first scrambling experience and I really enjoyed it. We came back down exactly the same way. Just go slow and careful and you should be ok. It was an amazing experience, so glad we did it!

We went to the refuge on the right, Apostolidis. It's a nice place and is a little closer to Mitikas for the morning.
I definitely wouldn't recommend the Anathema route, the path is steep, largely through forests so you don't see much, and the track is harder to follow. We came down the other route, via Petrostouga, and it was a much nicer walk with better trail and better views. I hope you enjoy your trip, we really loved it. It's an amazing place!

I have to respectfully disagree with my partner. Anathema was definitely the better route! It's a long walk, so it felt steep and knackering and we didn't have great weather, but it was much better than the path - which was fine for walking back. It was a unique landscape, great trees and greenery and we were out of the woods too! Anathema every time, for me.

Lewis Coleman, i see. Thank you both for your info and tips! If Anathema has better scenary then i think will go that way. It exits the forest sooner, right?

I think some of our disagreement comes from the fact that we had really thick fog on much of that day, so we couldn't see much of anything. We thought it exited the forest quicker but I'm not too sure. Whichever you choose, let us know how you find it!
