Excellent 'Buying a Horn' tutorial. This reminds me of the time I was choosing my first pro trumpet back in high school. The Marshall Music salesman let me take four Bach Strads and a Benge home to try out for a week and my teacher and I went over all of them using similar criteria. I can't imagine any salesman in the US these days letting a high school kid do that now!!!
I’m going to test out clarinets tomorrow and I was looking for a video on how to do it correctly because this is my first time looking to buy an instrument. And I found your channel after finding you in high school and it was so helpful! Love the tip at the end and look forward to more stuff!!
Wow 6 bass clarinets! that's awesome, I still can't get one Legrande or BCXXI. Hope to someday. This helps to show me how to pick one out when that day comes. great vid.
As a suggestion for checking grain quality, rubbing your fingernail across the grain can help with identifying grain density and locating any irregularities in the wood. Might be a little more precise than eyeballing it.
Well that was fun and ear-opening. I fully understand the "pick the horn that lets you play you." If it feels right, it just very well may be THE one. Your description of how to narrow down the options based on fixable things is very much like house-hunting and deciding based on paint color. If you can fix it, it may be the better horn for you. I hadn't fully thought about spring tightness on keys for ease of playability though have been aware of the tightness-usually wanting things a wee bit tighter to be sure pads sealed (mainly on my saxes). The A key on my bass is quite stiff (still after 5 years), so getting that adjusted certainly wouldn't hurt. Awesome mini seminar! Something like this would be great at ClarinetFest.... ;-)
Did the same thing in Paris for my tenor and baritone sax. Its amazing that you have to take them always to be adjusted. For soprano i went to yamaha, not a problem. Coincidence?. BTW my bass clarinet will be Selmer anyway...
What do you think is the best bang for your buck bass clarinet for a very talented 8th grader who is planning to continue symphonic band through high school and maybe community bands in college (but not planning to major in music at this time) They play a Jupiter at school and have a loaner Yamaha. I think they like the Jupiter à little better.
I have a Selmer Bundy which I love. It only goes down to Eb however but it's otherwise nice for me. Also, are you planning to go to the Low Clarinet Convention in January? If not you should.
I had a question. The bass clarinet my school gave me is single register and I often have a tough time getting anything above a high A to respond quickly and sound nice, any tips?
Whoa! I am an aspiring professional clarinet, specializing in bass! I don't own my own clarinet except for my broken old Yamaha. It tunes SOO SHARP! I hate it, honestly
Yeah have you tried pulling out the mouthpiece or barrel a bit? What mouthpiece are you using? and are you absolutely sure it isn't technique related? Have you tried other horns to check for differences?
dear earspasm i watch alot of your videos and they help me out alot with improving my technique on bass clarinet i was hopin for you to see my comment because i wanted to ask if you caan record this years tmea bass clarinet all region music and breakk it down in parts that you think will need the most attention thank you for your videos and please help me out
Who can even afford more than one bass clarinet? This video feels so disconnected from people's actual reality, most of us not being wealthy middle class.
As a multi-instrumentalist of over 50 years, the one thing I can say for sure, is that every single instrument is different.
Just like human beings.
The sewing machine inclusion cracked me up immediately. Love the humor Michael!

I love #5 too! It sounded perfect right out of the box! B stock 4 was also fantastic!
I was curious about your process, thank you for this.
I have always admired the sound of Selmer bass clarinets. Sweet in the high register and beefy in the lower notes!
I'm practically drooling looking at all those bass clarinets xd
Same

The wand chooses the wizard
Outstanding. Thank you.
Very helpful video! Keep ‘em coming!
Thank you. Lots of interesting things. I’m newbie in bass clarinet, i’m learning with your videos) And thank you for your advices.
The difference between B-stock #4 and the rest was huge. So even and smooth.
This video is really helpful for me now, because I soon go to Paris to get my Selmer bass clarinet

Please, could you make a video about the Selmer's Contra Alto in rosewood?
You are absolutely right. Choose the horn you like best and make it play and sound the way you want. Great video.
Awesome video, I am a big fan of your work! Sound fantastic as always!
beautiful cello suite and great advice!
We need to get you to Bloomington next time you’re coming to Indiana!
Thanks for sharing your process!
This is a great review. Do you do this process for every instrument you sale?
Helpful and humorous - I really love it. ❤ and of course 🙏
You should explore Indy next time you come to Indiana.
If that sewing machine was musical, I suppose it would be a Singer.

Thank you sir! This is a very useful insight!

#3 in the clarion range sounded a bit off on a couple notes. There was a slight buzzing or ringing sound.
Thanks for this! 👍🙂
11:49 missed the chance to say "I'm picking up weird vibrations"
My school has a selmer privilege bass clarinet from like the 40’s it’s super cool and I play it!😊
What’s your mp setup? Thanks

try buying a tuning neck
@@tonythompson4022 it's a soprano clarinet. My parents don't want to spend any money on my music except what is ABSOLUTELY necessary
@@giganerd896 if it's sharp buy a larger barrel or pull out a lot in not just the barrel but whole instrument
Yeah have you tried pulling out the mouthpiece or barrel a bit? What mouthpiece are you using? and are you absolutely sure it isn't technique related? Have you tried other horns to check for differences?
I have tried many options. The clarinet needs to be pulled out at the midjoint about a quarter of an inch. Many clarinets, too.
i love this

Spending over $60,000 on 5 Bass Clarinets in 2 hours-
Yup- Coke is a hell of a drug.
You need to bring a KORG Tuner
Why this dude buying 6 i dont like this but like why
Um, because I sell them: earspasm.com/instruments
Soon the dollar will be meaningless so why not buy bass clarinets?!😅

He sells them. He hand picks the clarinets he offers in his shop.
