OTC Hub Grappler: $439.99: www.jbtoolsales...
Many people suggested I try a Hub Grappler when I did the bearing on Cameraman Brian's 4Runner. Now that I've tried the tool, I can see why. Some of you might point out that the tool didn't work for every application, the Ford wheel bearing for instance. Well, if 20 tons and heat couldn't do it, I'm not surprised the Hub Grappler had trouble as well.
When this tool works, it works. It can also save a bunch of time. It can also do many of the jobs that used to require a shop press. For me, it's a great tool. If you do this kind of work a lot, I suggest you get one. If you don't do this work a lot, find someone you can borrow one from. The time you spend tracking them down will be more than made up for when you go to use the tool.

Thanks for keeping the old hub and showing us all the awesome power of the "HUB GRAPPLER". Great job Eric. -John
8:48 "I was just beating on that thing all day and I was sore for a week afterward" Sorry, I couldn't help but point it out! How immature of me.
All jokes aside, your videos are awesome Eric! Keep up the epic work. Subbed!
+Nicholas Toffoli lol
+Nicholas Toffoli Yea, I walked right into that one didn't I?
A reply from the man himself :D That's made my day for sure!

Hello, Eric. Your presentations are always a joy but for some reason this one stands out as one of your all time best. Thank you for the call out on parts labeling and I would like to add; why do they use multi digit numbers when they can simply start with part #01 through #60 or how ever many there are ? Finally, I would be okay if you leave the "Fix it forward" link on every one of these. A cause I can see fit to throw some loot to now and then. Thanks, Gordon

Unless a better explanation comes along I can buy that ! An outfit that allows you to replace single damaged or lost components from a set is okay with me. Thanks, adventure. GM
"How do you like me now?" That line cracked me up more than it should have.
OTC make nice products and has been around for years, I used there products back in the 70's, never had a problem, thank you Dennis
i love that tool. i've been using a similar tool since about 1998 and its paid for itself many times over. just remember to keep the threads clean and lubed after each use. sounds excessive but well worth the effort over time.
Your tool review videos are my personal favorite. You lighten my wallet one review at a time. Keep em coming!
Getting ready to do this tomorrow. After watching a few of these videos I've decided I'm not going to get into this without that hub grappler. It would be horrible if I'm not able to complete the job at home and have to not only tow my car to the shop but be without my car until the shop can do the job.
I just used one to remove and installed front bearrings on a 2008 BMWxi with that tool. Very awesome. Only problem was I had to use a slide hammer to take the hub off because BMW decided to put a dust cover that covers the hub and I didnt want to damage it because it was a customer's. I have the basic Kit with the tool and some spacers. Here's a trick. You can get all those other spacers in your kit pretty much from a Harbor freight master bearing kit which is why I just ordered the basic hub grappler tool
Just what I need!! Daughter just dropped off her husband car for me to repair, geez!! I bought one cheap piece of crap, says do not use impact wrench. I BEAT tar out of the bearings, no choice, use the impact. That set is what I need!! Thanks!! You the man!! For sharing.
I love my Hub Grappler!
It's a game changing time saver bigtimes.
Thanks for the tip on pulling rotors I hadn't thought of using the grappler for that!!
I remember a few years ago, I made a brake drum puller from a 2"X4" and 2 jaws from a 3 jaw puller and it worked.
I pull the knuckle off the vehicle and do the work in my press. I find the worst part of the job is getting the ABS sensor out of the hub without breaking it. this tool would allow doing the work on the vehicle and save potentially breaking sensors.
if this saves breaking 3 or 4 sensors per year then it will pay for itself in a short time.
I have OTC tools that I bought 30 years ago, and rarely have any complaints with any of they're products
In the upper lid of the box there are spaces to hold the different adapter plates. It would be a good place to write the numbers to save search time.
im a mechanic and i love learning new things !! subscribed
A good puller set is never a waste of money. Nice review.
Great tool to have Eric. I have some other brand where there is a strong bearing just under the bolt head to ease the friction. It works great.
What brand snd part number??
Click→ 10:57 "so the Hub Grappler, was able to pull the sword from the stone!" Ha ha! Classic!
I have a 2004 ford explorer and have used the OTC Hub Grappler to remove the hub and bearing. According to the manual the cup that is recommended is slightly to small to push the bearing through in my opinion. I used the next size larger and pushed the bearing out without much difficulty.
I just changed my Honda Accord front wheel bearings today with the same kit. Worked just fine.
They still have a light etching on each piece , it does take a while to find the pieces. Mission accomplished tho.
Hey Eric! Great review as always. I've personally had mixed results with OTC tools. In particular, two and three arm pullers that tended to strip out or fracture the pulling arms. And it was average work. I didn't put a long breaker bar on them and go bananas...Just a half inch drive ratchet. Fortunately, I bought the tools from a terrific local tool shop and they exchanged the broken tools without question. The tools were in the lower end of the price range and the shop owner basically said, they were more or less hobby grade tools so you get what you pay for. I have stuck with the brand because of great support and price from my dealer but I definitely baby them to keep them alive.
Just wait until they break, that justifys getting an upgraded version
Eric great review as always, and yours is one of my favorite RUclips channels. About the 4 Runner hub. Aren't they like a normal "unit bearing" hub, and really supposed to be non serviceable? Also with this tool I've only ever worked on one vehicle that you could get the axle shaft out of the hub without either removing the hub itself, or the knuckle. Another thing that would be beneficial to the kit is having the book on a CD, or online so you have the ability to print out what pages you'd like for the job you're doing. Keeps the info from getting all greasy, and eventually needing replaced.
I just used this tool to remove the hub in order to replace a wheel bearing.
A lifesaver.
Spin the large nut, not the bolt, it's easy to damage the threads that way.
Also if the threads wear out replace the bolt and nut as a set. They wear and stretch the threads into each other.
Use a small bearing under the bolt head You get several uses before it's tossed It's a feature that saves the threads and should be updated place it under the bolt head and Washer. Then the beating sound when torqued
I finally purchased & as I am a mobile tech it was on my must have list! It is gonna start paying for it self next week!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
"Where DOES he get such wonderful toys?" Stellar Review Eric. I have to get my hands on one of those.....
That's a wicked lookin' kit. If you got that kind of money and do a lot of that kind of work, completely worth it.
Great tool review on a great tool. I purchased one last summer. Please give us more tool reviews like this one, not on the non pro junk.
The 99-04 cobra rear irs bearing and hub is not listed, but I was able to use this tool on a 01 Cobra Mustang and it worked great!
This is on my buy list, simple, efficient. It pays for itself it seems.
It took me the better part of 2 days to get my drum off my spindle....I even bent a beefy 30yr old c clamp that my grandpa held onto for decades. One thing I'm thinking Eric is that an electric impact should make it a bit easier. My neighbor has a snap on that's pretty amazing. over 800lb's of torque on the first hit.
I would use a permanent marker in the top lid to mark the numbers for the adapters to find them easier.
maybe i missed it, but i didn't hear any mention of lubing the threads and thrust washers.
This is the sort of kit local tool hire companies should have, would most certainly be well worth hiring for the day.
Awesome tool! A must have for anyone who can afford it. It will more than pay for itself over time.
You have a great suggestion the have the adapters marked deeply along the edges and for a longer lasting more useful manual they should laminate the pages since plan paper will quickly get grease stained and torn , perhaps a copy on DVD and or an app. for smart phone since every one has one now a days !
Eric i really appropriate this video because i was wondering about this very tool. nice professional job as always.
Eric, OTC makes a Hydraulic Kit add-on to the grappler. P/N 6575-3.
I have this tool and my critique was the same. I used a label maker and placed the labels in the relief cuts in the top of the case. That will probably not work long term for a pro mechanic but for a diy'er like me, it should be sufficient. I was going to try to, just for kicks and giggles, to use a stamping set to punch the numbers in the side like you suggested. I would go a step further and spray paint the area with white paint and sand it back off. In theory, that should leave the paint in the punched area and the numbers would show up white.
Tip, fill in the stampings with a white wax pencil instead of paint.
When u get a manual like that, disassemble it, get the clear notebook sleeves, place NON stained pages in sleeves then in notebook.
Just got the new one and I have the older one for about 20 plus years
I own the Tool. It' saves time and prevents aggravation.
My guy. Eric the effin life saver. ⚙️
I purchase this tool after watching the video its was worth it !
Price is now $579.18 in the link, up from $439.99 back in 2015. Ain't inflation grand? Worth it for the quality if you use it enough.
couldnt you tape or use a label maker and in the indentions in the case on the top half and label the numbers of the parts so you could find them a little bit quicker?
hey Eric I have one of those tools but mine came with what appeared to be a two pice cone washer that goes under the head of the bolt it acts as a bearing some tips on it lots of crc synthetic black break lube on the treads and under the head of the bolt and I would recommend always use the large nut the treads are off set in it don't want to know why I recommend it
something I've done with tool sets like that is, write the numbers down on a piece of paper and and simply list them from right to left. i.e. 5525 is the 3rd one from the left or something similar to that
awesome tool and like always excellent video Brian, and Eric wonderful presentation. Thank you
Marked them on the lid where you would see the numbers of the mold grooves there sir
I know what tool I'm adding to my Christmas list!!!
your the man Eric, and the look on your face when u were beating on that hub with the hammer is priceless lol.
I am very impressed with tools you have. Keep going, enjoying your videos.
Excellent review. This tool just made my list. Thanks Eric!
Mark the opposite side of the case where the grooves are with a sharpie. Now you can find parts while still in spot
hey Eric.....Eric O on South Main Auto's RUclips channel did a video on this tool as well. He's been using it a while and made a pretty cool improvement to it by using a bearing under the forcing screw rather than a washer that comes with the kit. Check it out, he's even given the PN in a video about the tool.
ill be trying to purchase one in the future
Another solution to that one critique would be to put the numbers on the case, maybe even engrave it into the plastic on the lid side.
You could mark the lid with the numbers using a label maker if you don't want/have the ability to mark the metal edges.
for now you could just put the numbers on with a texter on the indented side opposing side lid of the blow mould case eg 314111.
i see what you mean though Eric, hell of a lot easier than the old hammers and pry bars.
i own one of these myself... a little on the pricy side, but worth every penny for what it can do.
Now you need a bearing splitter :-)))))
that kit looks like it might have made it easier to pull the U-Joint flange off the differential on the last truck I worked on.
Pro tip, get a giant rubber band to help hold the hub puller arms on setup, forget the set screws. Forget the instructions, they’re often wrong. Grab what fits and go with it. Trust me I’ve done hundreds.
I wish they included the hammer wrench that's in the older kit.
this video just made me buy one
Another good video Eric, you have the gift of gab!!! I have the Hubtamer but wish I had the grappler attachment. Looking at your video, it looks like the grappler is pushing against something which in turns causes the forcing screw to push out the bearing from the back. I'll see if I can fab up something that does the same function. Thanks again for the video and ideas.
I like your style of presentation. Nice review.
Maybe use a label maker and stick the numbers on the side as a fix. I take it you might have to redo the label after a few uses but will make finding them easier. or scribe into the case where each part of tool goes.
Great video! Thanks Eric and Brian :) keep up the videos!
It's a pity the manual doesn't come with the pages coated, to resist the manky oil look.
very useful tool
Hola esta herramienta también sirve para baleros de tercera generación gracias
Make sure to grease up the threads of the forcing screw every time you use the tool
Eric, take a paint pen or sharpie and transfer the number or part of it to the case position . Looked like you would have room. Might take 20 minutes but would save time in the long run.
The adapter worth $200, the book worth $300. I tell you, I am not a pro or does this for living. I always get trurned around, mixed uo, confused, stop and restart while trying to figure out what tool part tobuse and how. The booknis gold
Awesome review
That's a great tool! Thanks for the information.
Awww...Eric is a pretty picture kinda guy!
teehee, play with your tools :P, this thing looks awesome, will definitely be checking it out!
Very nicely put, thank you.
I have one...
Doesn't it say in the instructions that your not supposed to use an impact gun?
Maybe OTC could print labels or emboss the numbers on the top part of the cover.
When first pulling bearing, do not use cup until it breaks free
Wow!! that is one heavy duty tool, no more hammering Eric :-D
Keep the thread oiled and that will last :-)
make some labels in the slots in the lid of the case, Then you can see in the opened part of the case your custom label numbers !
I hope Autozone starts lending this kit. What I hate most about hub and bearing pullers is confusing operation. Or maybe it's just me :D
Sweet. I bet it could pull off that race that's still stuck on there too. I wonder if it could press out that longer Toyota control arm bushing with the bolts on both sides.
+ScubaCat3 The kit comes with a race puller, I'm surprised he didn't show it..
Well he did briefly show the other pullers. I'm sure he'll feature the tool in future videos as well. No need to pack so much into a simple review.
I'm just surprised (talking about the previous video of separating that hub) he didn't try the trick of knocking out a couple of studs and driving two bolts into the back of the knuckle somewhere to press off the hub.
Would love to try one out. But the price... dang!!
And that is going on my list of tools
Buy yourself a WHITE Sharpie to highlight al the numbers on the parts. Definitely makes it easier to read them.
Would using a press do the same thing?
Hi Eric was that a 32 mm wrench that you used with the hub grappler
I'd emboss the area under each spacer. You wouldn't have to spin each one to see the number and besides it taking time to pull out each one I imagine it would be hard to read the little numbers in dim lighting or if your eyes are old like mine or if it's dirty from being handled and not cleaned up before you put it away , .... somewhat like your greasy, dirty manual is
I'd laminate each page of the book and place them in a 3 ring binder. I also would make a spare copy of book in case you loose a page by not returning to the binder if you removed it . We've all done that.
Eric's real thought at 10:42 was probabally more along the lines of "You've gotta be shittin' me..."
you should mark the disks in their respective spot in the lid!
would've like to have seen the tool pull the race/bearing half off the hub. but good video.
This is a great tool to have. Saves you a LOT of trouble. Oh yea, Eric knows. 4 Runner anyone?
PS: I see Eric mentioned it here, haha
funny. ive been out of the automotive industry for 2 months and going back, shits cool
I would think that considering the nature of that Kit, and the likelihood that the manual will be used heavily, that the paper would be resin impregnated, so you could clean off dirt and crud from mechanics dirt hands instead of having it soak into the paper.
write the part number in the opposite side of the cover with the magic marker
I think OTC did not etch part number on side- a.) if it was lasered on side it would wear over time through use b.) etced on side might take away the milling spec of fit THUS i agree the etching could be better on FRONt. * remember thats serious hardened steel.
