Canon ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) Dropping Link Connection

  • Here I show the recently released Canon Speedlite Transmitter constantly dropping the connection with it's flashes. Even with the flagship EL-1 it drops the link after a few minutes and must have the power cycled in order to establish a connection again.

      they are releasing a v3 of the transmitter now. My money is that it will not solve the problem. canon has been silent. On the canon use forums, I see canon reps replying to these issues with scripted reposes that do not address the loss of sync issue with he inability to reestablish sync without power cycling the speed lights.. when I posted this video on their canon USA community page, I was banned.

  • @JimOsdale

    Thanks for the video, and it's quite the problem for Canon at this point. I have two of the brand new EL-1 flashes, and one of the older 600EX-RT flashes, and they all have a problem staying connected. Upon further investigation, it's not the ST-E3-RT with the problem because I turned off this transmitter, and turned it back on several times to see if the LEDs were still green, and within about 10 minutes, one of the EL-1s dropped the connection, so how can this be the transmitter problem? Based on my tests, it's the flashes that are dropping the connection, and we all know it's RF interference, could it be the new WiFi-6 wireless access points around the house and commercial venues? There are other posts that suggest Apple HomePods are the issue, but these items are not in my house, so I cannot confirm or deny these are the conflicting hardware. I do have the new WiFi-6 access points from UniFi as my "MESH" Wi-Fi system in the house.
    I made some other tests by purchasing the "sock" that covers the flash and sort of shields it from the RF interference, but this causes more grief because you are essentially now limiting the ability for the transmitters to communicate to the flashes. These are not the solution either, as the link was still dropping. Ugg...
    So I did some other tests, and I bought the ($80 USD) Godox transmitter X-Pro II C, and purchased two of the ($40 USD) Godox X1RC receivers for mounting to the Canon EL-1 flashes. Using this configuration, I NEVER lost the link from the Godox transmitter to the Godox receivers, EVER. I let this run for hours, made several tests, used my Canon R5 in different configurations, manual mode, ETTL, and the connection stayed solid, I never lost the link to the flashes.
    That being said, there are plenty of posts throughout the Canon forums where this is a huge problem for Canon, and you hear suggestions from Canon support: "Try changing the batteries". Are you kidding me, that is ridiculous, they have nothing else to suggest because deep down they know that interference with all of the "Internet of Things" on WiFi-6, and the 2.4 GHZ band is full of traffic. So why does the Godox (Chinese made) hardware stay connected?
    Unfortunately, this means a few more dollars for additional hardware, more AA batteries, but at least the connection is NEVER dropped, and I do not have to power cycle the Canon flash and Canon transmitter. The other downside to Godox transmitters & receivers, you don't get all of the features that Canon has to offer, but in reality, do you really need to have the flash at less than 1/128 power? I say this because the Canon transmitter and EL-1 flash can be set to 1/8192 power, and the Godox can only be set to as low as 1/128 power, which is not a big deal in my opinion. You do however get some pretty cool features in the Godox transmitter, you can turn off any single flash by double tapping one of the 5 group buttons, a useful feature that is super fast.
    Deep down, I really think Canon has a problem that may not even be fixable though firmware, it's most likely the frequency that Canon uses that is conflicting with nearby RF devices. In my opinion, why Canon does not reconnect automatically instead of power cycling the hardware is beyond me.

    • @shootloadrepeat
      @shootloadrepeat Год назад

      I think the main reason, of course, is, the proliferation of the new WiFi frequencies, and the Canon-branded TX/RX devices all comply with FCC maximum transmission power regulations in the USA and in Europe. None of the YongNuo or Chinese brands comply, so it's very possible they're transmitting higher power levels than are legally allowed. It's my theory. The Canon RT system used to be flawless. All of a sudden, everyone in the world is having issues with equipment that cannot receive updates via firmware. I suspect the 2.4Ghz radio frequency spectrum is being overwhelmed by all these other spectrums. (Yes, I know they are 4-5 Ghz apart, but every doorbell, IoT device, smart speaker, fridge, toaster, etc. is connected to WiFi, along with all these multi-band phones constantly transmitting is causing the drops. The space is under contention. We need a new approved frequency for speedlites. Maybe something can be approved to be used in the 800Mhz band, which will also give greater obstacle penetration capability. Would require all new hardware though.

    Any update? I've found that using "WiFi Analyzer" (for Android phones) showed a lot of interference in channels below 12 even though the RT scan showed a different result. I'm using channel 15 now and it's seems MUCH more stable, though not perfect -- so my issue seems to be RF interference. I'm also looking into just using alkaline batteries instead of rechargeable: perhaps there is a power instability issue I'm running into that's causing the channel go off kilter.
    The real puzzle isn't losing link but why it's gone for good. When I purposely lose link due to distance or obstacles -- and I correct the situation -- it re-links. Why wouldn't simply changing the channel (e.g. 15 -> 14 -> 15) fix it? And I don't power cycle: I just toggle the affected unit's wireless radio off then back on.

    • @45Supergun
      @45Supergun Год назад +2

      I'm adding this as well. With further testing, I found that using a custom ID was also an issue (maybe the main one) -- which was my normal practice. Canon is the only 2.4 GHZ trigger system that offers 10,000 IDs (that I know of); most offer 100 max (0 - 99). That's a lot of IDs: each must have a frequency assigned to them. Guessing, the gap between frequencies might be narrow enough that interference causes a unrecoverable deflection. In my latest testing, using 9999 (you can use 0000, too), I had ZERO dropped links in four hours! I believe using either extreme of the ID range bookends the failure to just one direction instead of two, which theoretically reducing drops by 50%!
      I'm now using channel 15 and ID 9999. I don't think rechargeable batteries are an issue (but could be wrong). I see no reason to test that theory at the moment as I'm having 100% success with my current config.

      @@45Supergun rechargeable batteries are probably not an issue because I saw people complaining about the new Canon Speedlite ST-E10 Transmitter (which is powered by the camera) and this new fancy El-1 (powered by a new LP-EL battery) unit as well.

Either using AUTO channel setting, or scanning and finding a manual channel with “good” reception using the SCAN function. I’ve been using the Canon RT system since it came out in 2013 or so, and it’s been the past few years that these RT flashes have been really giving me reliability issues with linking. The cheaper Godox flashes seem to have better reliability with their wireless as I own some of those too. I photograph interiors and for years using Canons wireless trigger with 530's and now 600's. In the past 2 years they have become almost unusuable; we spend most of our time running around power cycling the flashes and transmitter to reestablish links, then hope they last long enough to get the next shot off. I'm usually running 5-6 speedlites. In reading posts its been said the Apple devices cause the link failure. Last 2 projects I went around the house (with the owners permission) and unplugged every apple device (in this case it was Apple TV's). Once they were all off I had no problems. Shutting off peoples devices won't always be an option, so I'm researching and alternate system. One thing i use a MS surface tablet to controll the camera and speedlites through the canon software. Its easier to review the photos on the larger screen. Controlling the speedlite settings on the same software is definitely a plus. Not sure if other brands / systems will be able to be controlled with canon EOS utility software. If anyone knows a good alternate and if it works with EOS Utility a reply would be great. Can't believe Canon won't or hasn't addressed this in their new transmitters and speedlites. Really frustrating.

The issue gets even worse when using Canon Connect phone app, it's is become nearly unusable. Does anyone know if Godox has such issues? I would move to Godox then, as Canon's remote system isn't professional or reliable.

    Same issue on my end once I switched to the R from the 5D M2. I’ve also tried disabling my WiFi/Bluetooth on the R and had improved performance but not consistent. I think it also has to do with my WiFi at home interfering. Need to go do tests out in the field away from WiFi.

    Hello y'all. I am having the same issues. Thought it was me and lack of knowledge on how to use. However, I thought that maybe loss of connection was wifi interference. There are only 11 channels on 2.4 spectrum. However, on the 5 gig spectrum, there are 150 or so. Although I have not tried it. I am thinking putting everything in auto might be the best way to avoid interference. There is no easy fix without boosting power levels, or better electronics. I am really, really bummed about this now. I spent a lot of loot, like all of us on a three light system. There are RF spectrum analyzers that are compact that can work with your computer to visually display 2.4 channels and which is either open or less contested. It is such BS that we even have to consider that. :(

      @TheVFXbyArt 8 месяцев назад

      I say class action lawsuit.
      I hear it’s the same problem with the new eL-1.
      I think what canon needs to do is enable a feature where if the flash loses connection, it will reset its receiver (on the flash) automatically the way it does as we power cycle it. It’s should be user adjustable from every 5 sec to 5 mins.
      If the transmitter is communicating, fine. As soon as the flash loses the transmitter, the flash’s receiver should reset itself, reenabling the link.
      We live is a radio congested world, this is our reality and that part is not canon’s fault. However canon needs to enable this contingency as losing link is now the norm.

    I'm so glad I saw this video. I was about the purchase the ST-E3-RT Ver2, but I watched this vid and read the comments. I'm going with GODOX X1R-C E-TTL and using the X-ProS transmitter. I already have the X-ProS Transmitter as I used Godox AD and QT Strobes. I was told by B&H that I can use my X-ProS to control the GODOX X1R-C E-TTL, on which I will mount my EL-1. No, I won't be able to increment the power less than 1/128, but I don't think I'll need 1/256, 1/512, etc. I usually always use my EL-1 in manual mode as I shoot mostly in manual on my R5 so I have complete control of the lighting. I'll test out my new system tomorrow. I'll report back. Wish me luck!

    Why are you using channel 6 -- or any dedicated channel -- instead of auto? You should only use a channel if you're around somebody using auto, too, and you're getting interference. Auto allows for auto switching if the channel becomes weak. Doing a scan is just a snapshot: it doesn't tell you the strength unless you do repeated scans. USE AUTO.

      If you have some time you can try killing the power to the wifi system and seeing if that corrects the problem. The most absolute way is to shut off your main power breaker then try. If the problem goes away then slowly turn each room back on and wait several minutes to see which room with devices causes the link to drop. Some people I've spoken to have been able to narrow the problem down to a single device.
