The big problem that they were concerned about in the video was how their clever marketing algorithm causes young people to be in a "spell" of depression, lethargy, and stress. Then, as a result of this algorithm, young people need the dopamine hit that social media gives them, making them addicts, and easy prey to people pushing their views on them. Yet, as concerned as they said they were about young people, they never mentioned the many studies that have found that the radiation from the cell phone itself causes these exact same problems: depression (low dopamine), lethargy, and stress (high levels of cortisol)-no algorithm needed! So, the radiation itself causes their vulnerability to suggestions. If they were truly concerned about young people's mental health and vulnerability to others' opinions, they would have mentioned this dangerous phenomenon, especially for young people whose brains are still developing, in this video. But they really seemed to think that they controlled these kids.

Yes, but those of us in our 70's are still coasting along on the prosperity momentum of the US 20th century post WWII boom. That momentum is no longer accessible to many in the next generations, and what little money they actually make above their enormous debts is taxed so we can have our happy retirements.
For me, this is much bigger than any lifestyle comforts I might enjoy. I see the damage the Boomer generation helped to inflict on the environment, the economy, and, through our investments, on the fabric & direction of society, and I find myself increasingly concerned that our end of life prosperity has come at an extremely high price - our country and, possibly, the human future itself.
Even more concerning: too many Americans have what seems to be a "I've got mine, take care and good luck" attitude toward the rest of society. That appears to be the endgame of unregulated capitalism, consumer culture and the perpetual narcissistic self-absorption of The American Way. So, of course some social media programmers try to keep their children away from the harmful platform that they make a nice living producing for the exploitation of other people's children. (Those clean coal advocates sure don't want any of that coal around their kids because they know better than what they are selling.)
So, here we are. Half of us increasingly appalled at our society's shortcomings and the other half doubling down on those shortcomings because they are personally profitable. And, the really sad thing is, even if we have a crisis in conscience and start to rein all of this in, we live in a globalized, interconnected world where others with no integrity either are eager to step into any "market opportunity" that becomes available. This is, therefore, probably not going to end well...

Anyone remember when email platforms switched from just that service to an entire front page filled with news articles that were regurgitated and reposted from normal main stream media? Since we know that news networks have a biased one way or another the addition of Internet platforms like Yahoo, MSN, Google, Comcast, etc. additionally all have their own political biases. That started and amplification and polarization for people to choose One source over another and then using our email daily means that they were exposed to it more routinely. Fast forward 10 years and social media presents the same sort of bias in a more personalized way. It is extremely amplified through their algorithms and increasingly launch people into bubbles in which they never see opposing opinions except when they’re being ridiculed.
The technology isn’t bad. The personalization of interests her in person is where it all goes awry. If anything needs regulation it will be to get social media out of the business of spreading news and I use the term “news loosely Congress needs to treat all social media platforms more like a public halt crisis. End it is just that, because like a virus, lies and hate spread from person to person just as easily.

I've been telling my friends and family this past year that social media or any internet algorithms are basically making us all feel like we're the majority and everyone else feels the same way as you. Politics would be only 1 of many examples. Both Democrats and Republicans that I talk to both speak as if most people feel the same way they do about a topic. I tell them that the internet is catering to them and showing them what they want to see or stuff related to what they typically browse and search for. I know I still have some bias regarding certain things, as we all do whether we realize it or not. But I think of myself as very empathetic and mostly unbiased person if I set out to be, and can usually place my self in someone else's shoes to see their perspectives. I'm also 34 and probably one of the last generations that will truly remember what it was like to not have a smart phone when I was kid or the access to internet and social media that kids have today. It's scary as hell honestly. I didn't get my first phone till I was like 17 and you couldn't even text message, let alone search Google or RUclips. I see the good it has brought but I'd do without it if I had the choice.

I too found it absolutely critical information that the people who run these companies minimize social media, games, and electronics for their own children. Doesn't necessarily mean these things are inherently bad, but it's a strong indication that they should not be overused. I shared this information with my students. Absolutely no effect. None.
If you tell an alcoholic or a heroin addict that they have a problem, they might not do anything (at that moment) to change, but at least they'll usually acknowledge that these things are harmful. I don't think I've met a single child or adult who would say the same thing about social media and games, unless they're being scolds. (I guess the future belongs to the 'scolds.')
Something else I find fascinating. Apparently the general consensus is that Twitter tends to be left wing while Facebook is right wing. I'm curious how that has happened. I suspect the only underlying intent was to connect as many people as possible and subtle differences in the way they work led to this split. Did Twitter go left because Facebook was right? And didn't Facebook at some point realize that their platform was encouraging and expanding neo-Nazis? What kind of people see this and think, yeah but we're making billions of dollars?
There was once a chat group for women who were petite, where to find clothes, etc.. It was called TinyGirl. Idiot men started to take it over as a sex fetish group so the women who started it, seeing that it had gone off the rails shut it down. Zuckerberg would've monetized it, and then after it attracted serial killers would've put out press releases about all the 'efforts' they are making....

That's the first I've heard of Twitter and FB have ideological tendencies. I find FB being conservative and Twitter being liberal very surprising given how Trump lives on Twitter rather than doing his job and the many voices on all sides on these platforms. Algorithms don't care; they just show you content and ads that pertain to you to increase the time you spend on the platforms and the ads your respond to so the firms make more money. This has the very bad effect of driving people into their echo chambers seeing just content they like and reinforcing often wrong beliefs.

    • @WillN2Go1
      @WillN2Go1 3 года назад +2

@@linda1lee2 I think what's going on is either something in the algorithms, or how loosely or tightly they're applied that causes this. If attention equals profit for these companies then we can all imagine what's going to get the most attention: Shouting that people are here to kill us all or stating, There's a problem that needs more discussion? I suspect that Facebook intentionally followed the path of maximum profits with no regard for harm done, which probably comes from selling the information of people who are more easy to manipulate. Imagine if you got $10,000 for everyone you could get to start smoking. You wouldn't be working old people, you'd be hanging around the middle school. The politics of the most manipulable people is obvious those most susceptible to conspiracy theories.

If so, it would be beneficial to have an "internet training" class ( like driver's ED) to prepare kids to become critical thinkers, researchers with the internet. Kids younger than 16 could have basic flip phones to contact their parents and connect with friends - that's a lot more than I had growing up in the '80s.

All those are possible good suggestions. One thing that I have said for a many years now, and I'm finding it repeated by at least some progressive voices such as David Pakman to I believe Ralph Nader, is that it is becoming a critical necessity for mandatory classes in critical thinking/logic and philosophy for K-12 education.

If this documentary was totally accurate, “they” would have censored it. Think about it. Netflix is one of the many apps that beckon to us. Netflix is going to post an accurate documentary? The truth is always in the middle. If you watch this, watch it with objectivity and read between the lines. You’ll see this documentary’s own ‘mind manipulation’.

Okay - seems you are going in the Q-Anon direction. This documentary clearly points out that there is a truth here and unless we are willing to address it and do something about it, things will only worsen. HUMAN intervention is necessary for AI to not corrupt our minds. AI merely gathers all the data driven into it, to determine what information the "user" wants to see. But ultimately, it takes HUMANS to enter the content in the first place. So if we continue to enter garbage in - you get garbage out. Solid, unadulterated, honest, and non-biased journalism would be a good place to start.

Talks about how we should have more regulations on social media. The moral of the story is eliminate or at least highly reduce screen time. Research controversial topics don't take them at face value and spread misinformation.

Thank you for the conversation. It helps someone like me understand better and sympathize more with the problems facing young people. Young people are the future and that future need to be nurtured and not force fed the "fast food" of lies and half truths that will eventually poison them and imprison their minds. The question is, how do we go about weening them off of this narcotic teat of technology? The experience of a "real" world is being stolen from them.

I have always thought that because it’s so new and yet so intimately social there was never enough time for a healthy online etiquette to develop. This is essential for communication in general society and we absolutely teach our children how to be polite and work with each other so as not to be hurtful or rude unintentionally and why this is not just a better way to interact as people but codified into our laws so that if someone drastically crosses a ethical line they are stopped and hopefully deterred from ever repeating that antisocial action. This has to be moved over into the online community. Then there’s a way to go around this by teaching in school the underpinnings and psychology behind this online world. For older students it will involve a deep dive into the underlying psychological aspects of verbal abuse and how online bullying can harm and damage others in very real and brutal ways; I imagine that there are analogies between murder, rape, battery, theft, etc and the actions and reactions which happen virtually online. Especially when children are involved I believe it’s crucial that society comes to adopt and pass some sort of repercussions for bad behavior online. This must go beyond the various ways each social media company polices it’s online communities; which we all have seen are simply not very effective nor applied equally or fairly.
People are behaving very badly online currently, as though it is not a place where actions in the form of words or images are used as weapons and have real world consequences. We must start understanding that our interactions online are real and not a imaginary realm. Online socialization skills need to be taught early and continued exactly like the way we have taught our children to get along with others since time immemorial.

"I think, therefore I am" (Rene Descartes). In the shadow of social media, we are giving up our capacity for independent critical thought. It seems we have lost the ability to observe our surroundings and make basic, logical conclusions. Instead, large groups of otherwise intelligent, compassionate human beings run scared, at full speed, to the abyss of emotional crisis. I unplugged my personal face book page 12 years ago when it became too onerous to keep up with the changes FB was making to the platform. Now I spend more time with my family, learning how to play the guitar, and working on the ranch. I wish the best for our country.

But he's too self-assured to care about how many digital "friends" or "likes" one gets. Social media is not a good reflection of "social" anyone is or "popular" or "well-liked." In fact, I've come to see the people that overly obsessed with getting their "likes" and putting photo after photo of themselves on social media, as being socially inept or insecure. It's quite sad.

The most important point for me: adaptation is not the main goal. First, there's got to be some sort of resistance and alternatives. Then we'll see and decide what social media is good for. I'm sure Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc... won't concede willingly to step down to being just a tool. That aspect is simply a bad thing, and unhealthy.

As a mother of 2 boys (8 and 11 years old) I am finding it extremely difficult to deal with the constant push of screens and screen time in general. It puts a big stress on our family, the topic never stops coming up and needs constant attention. It cuts off our communication with each other, shortens our attention spans, our listening ability, and on and on.

That is a good question. How do we re-learn our desire to want to? Did we ever have one though? I mean through history we've always kind of been drawn to people who think like us, same religion, same political affiliations, same economic class. I used to think the internet was working toward making us a more diverse, tolerant, connected species. In the early days you could talk to people very different from you and learn a lot. I lost a lot of my biases just talking to people of other cultures and religions back in the early days of BBS's and chat rooms, before they morphed into the garbage they became.
