  • This is the ultimate proof that the portable SSD SanDisk Extreme PRO and Extreme are too fast for M1 Macs, you won't get the advertised speed on Macs, you need a computer that has compatible hardware to get the advertised speed. Macs with M2 chips won't get the advertised speed as well.

@NumberDZ Thanks for the explanation. Why is it that the USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 of the SanDisk is not compatible with the Thunderbolt 4 port on the mac but the ORICO USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 is? Is the ORICO just Thunderbolt 4 compatible and not listed this way on Amazon or am I missing something?

I have been editing video with my m1pro macbook pro 2021 which has thunderbolt 4 ports (USBC) and the speeds are fine...but the new generation of SSDs use a dual channel 3.2 (I dunno technical terms but read about it and discover that macs cannot use the new faster SSDs!) and so the only option for mac users is to get thunderbolt 3/4 SSDs such as the Sandisk professional pro G40 which is significantly more expensive than the regular USBC...have you tested this drive? Will it make a significant difference for video editing or are the Samsung T7 or Sandisk extreme as fast as required for video editing? No point in getting a thunderbolt SSD if I won't see a major improvement...thanks for the video

This video is misleading. Any Mac with an M1 or M2 chip has a Thunderbolt 4 Port that supports speeds up to 40Gb/s which is a whopping 5GB/s. That's 2.5 times faster than Extreme Pro SSD.
The question is HOW can you get that speed on your Mac?
    1) macOS update to latest Sonoma version
    2) Format the SSD to APFS format
    3) Connect the SSD directly to MacBook (no hubs)
    4) IS THE MOST IMPORTANT: The USB-C cable that comes with Extreme Pro SSD does NOT support speeds higher than 10Gb/s! You need to buy an EXTRA (expensive) Thunderbolt 4 cable that supports speeds of up to 40Gb/s which is 5GB/s.
Once you've done all 4 above, you'll get the advertised 2 Gigabytes per second speed.

    • @NumberDZ
      @NumberDZ  11 месяцев назад +1

Depends on your usage, if you install an internal SSD your computer will run faster and will improve the performance of the whole system.
If you choose the external SSD, you will have the convenience of having your data on the go and work with it with multiple computers easily.
I personally would choose to install the internal SSD because the speed and performance on the computer are a big priority for me, later, once you are ready, you can buy the external SSD to have more storage space.

Sorry to hear that, you can build your own NVMe it is actually pretty simple to build, the NVMe SSD Enclosure that I showed on the video is very good and inexpensive (compared to other enclosures), that enclosure combined with the SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus will give you the full speed, you can put it together in a couple of minutes and the price will be around $144 dollars, not too bad. That is likely bc this video was made before anyone was aware of that problem. I bought an extreme 1 TB a month before this video was made, and researched it thoroughly. That problem was not yet out in the ecosystem.
The good news for me is 1) it seems to manifest only on the 2 T and 4 T models, so far. 2) You can get a firmware update by plugging the serial # into the WD website, and it told me mine was not among those affected.
Get the update if you need it, but the bad news is it apparently did not fix the problem for the others. WD may be spoofing us with an 'update' that is nothing but hot air, out of desperation.
WD is tap-dancing like crazy and selling the drives at bargain-basement prices (likely with little guarantee), and lying their asses off. I will never get a drive from them ever again for that reason. But I have not had an issue with the 1 TB Extreme. YET.
I also don't like that the drive gets way too warm when plugged in and not even mounted. No data transfer either way, yet it's way too hot to the touch. Thermals are not that difficult to engineer, so to me, that shows incompetence in the design. The cable is way too short, too. People who work with 4K video say it gets so hot you can fry an egg on it.
Heat is the enemy of electronics, and maybe that has something to do with the entire issue. IOW, maybe those who are losing data are pushing the drive hard, which may cause the heat which may be the reason it loses data.
Any way you look at it, it's a clusterfutz. What we need is a class action suit. This is big enough to take WD down, and they know it.
And BTW, formatting a SSD to APFS for Mac should be a no-brainer. Of course you should do that as the very first thing. If you are using it for a Time Machine backup, the program will urge you to do that. Exfat works on PC and Mac, APFS only on Mac, so every vendor formats to Exfat, and every drive you get for a Mac should be reformatted immediately.
