My first impression was that RM was feeling entirely out of place in the roles he found himself in, like he was a disappointment, falling short of his friend's or society's expectations. In the MV, the roles of a friend, a father, a boyfriend, even a child, were being used as examples of roles that come with certain expectations. Or maybe this is his way of telling us that he's felt out of place since his childhood. He kept running through the maze of rooms (which represent different roles, different lives?) confused and alone until he came across another girl who was running to. I got the sense that finding her and realizing he wasn't the only one who felt out of place gave him an epiphany: that perhaps everyone feels that way. "You don't have to be the anything you see" you can just be yourself. And from that point on, he and the girl continue through the maze together, hand in hand, no longer running but living.
Extremely well said!! I immediately got that from the first few seconds-- That feeling when you are the only one sober and alone at a party. Feeling like you can't fit into any environment or relationship you have
I totally agree with your perspective..kinda what I was thinking.
I really hope RM gets nominated for grammy, but I know it won't happen. I really love this album. For the last 2 months I've been listening to the album almost every day.
I also feel like the girl represents another facet of himself, she's lost in the maze too, and only when they find each other/reconcile can he really find peace and integrate himself in the rest of the scenarios. Thank you for the reaction!
That's most likely it because there's the shot of him looking at himself and then there's the woman. So basically she's just part of Namjoon. This is also more likely bc in Lost! all the "main characters" are RM, including the girl. BTS have always been open about every facet that makes up a person (and Jimin also delved into the female part of himself in Like Crazy)
This song makes me cry every time. I see it as It’s about not having to live up to everyone else’s expectations and traditional societal roles. My favorite part is Namjoon barefoot after rediscovering himself. Also, the ending reconfirms that we are just souls play-acting different roles on this planet.
She is him. The accepting, peaceful, nurturing self. Finding me. Forget gender and sexuality. They're barefoot, grounded and natural.
I've been whistling/humming it for days. It's weirdly sad but comforting at the same time. It almost feels like comforting yourself through a hard time.
it looks like a Netflix show because it's directed, produced and written by the director of Beef on Netflix, he's korean american
I love this album. The growth of him as a musician is so palpable with it; it's just an incredible album.
I agree, with so much happening in his life and being so young when he started. It is like he hasn’t really found himself and grow. So this break was a great way for them to grow as individuals. Was wondering if you noticed that Hybe don’t have their usual intro anymore. I wonder why?
A separate studio produced the mv, not hybe, so there’s no bighit intro
Weverse Magazine -“the person who went to countless exhibitions and spiritual journeys to find the “Right Place”” has finally turned to the center of his consciousness to ME.”
Kind of sounds like the map of the soul “self” also called individuation according to Carl Jung. (And I only bring this up because BTS has delved into it so much that they have two albums with Map of the Soul in their titles MOTS Persona and MOTS7. )
According to Jung there are four steps to individuation: Persona, Shadow, Anima, Self. So perhaps she IS the Anima and Spring? He does refer to Spring as “her.” Maybe Spring is “self”?
The qualities of the integrated anima are self soothing, self nurturing, and self loving. Access to creative inspiration and a strong center and contained inner life.
And I also wonder if he is his own pain divine. Is music his pain divine? Like you said, there is a lot here to digest for sure.
When you pointed out that she was dressed like him, and there's that moment where he looks at himself, and there she is, reminded me that bts has worked with jungian concepts before. Maybe this could be related to find a anima/animus balance? I'm probably tripping, but now I've got something to talk about in therapy lol thank you! Once again, your video was super cool!
Your reaction is exactly my reaction and I heard many people feel it too. The music and the music video hit us hard on a level we can’t explain. Until a lot of time processing our feeling. This ability for a song to make us discover ourselves in ways we hadn’t before, or in ways we wouldn’t even try, is why THIS IS SO GOOD.
You should not feel apologetic for projecting your own personal life and emotions into the work. Because that’s what art is suppose to do.
It is about whatever it makes you feel it is about. Even if his own story exists as well within the work.
Thank you for your commentary.
Exactly❤
listening to this song reminds me of when I first listened to Mono. it's different but it's the same, in a way
he's one of a kind
I thought that girl represented his feminine side, that he found and accepted this yin to balance his yang, which brought him peace, so he could stop running around in confusion and calmly continue exploring his life's maze. Thank you for the reaction PD!
This has been the best interpretation of this mv I have seen yet. I love how you immediately connected what RM was thinking and saying. With finding and trying to understand himself so he can be happy with anything he goes through in life. I love everything about this reaction and thank you for every word you said. So, keep being your amazing self PD :)!
Also the single guy sitting next to RM on the couch is a major supporting character from Beef! Now that you mention the director, it makes sense why the actor appeared in RM's MV.
I was so happy when I found out about the director before I watched the MV, because beef too hits SO HARD so I just knew it would be an incredible song. ALSO ohhyuk co-producing a song with RM?? perfect. it really shows how well hyuk directed namjoon's voice
I just realized SOMETHING, after watching this hundreds of times. When RM found the girl/his true self (which was the girl he talked to on the couch), the same location or events showed up but he is in a better mood or should I say - he looks happy... Unlike the first part where he looks confused, unhappy and lost. What I'm getting from this is that, whatever life we are living or what ever life we view ourselves to have in the future or in the past. It will always go back to us finding our true selves .... accepting who we are, making amends with our younger self, not to live a life that is based on what others expect you to have... to not overthink about the future and just let life be.. In that way we will be able to face our daily lives with a more peaceful mindset. Coz RM is not a party-goer(at least that's what I believe in lol), RM doesn't have a wife or a live-in partner, doesn't have a kid yet and definitely not a baby anymore. As I dove deeper into the lyrics and MV's of this album, repeating the songs and based on what RM has shared in minimoni in Bangtan tv. This album is about him releasing what he has to say, what is on his mind. RM definitely is going thru this roller coaster of emotions, confusions... like us 30's trying to figure out where we should be in at this age, what status, what could've...should've... being lost.. Like the lyrics and MV. | Note: BTS had said this before, that their lyrics/songs meanings varies on what resonates with us the most. So this is what I got. I am in awe and is very addicted to the whole album. WELL DONE NAMJOONIE!
Lookin healthier and happier PD, love to see it. I felt the same about your analysis, his finding spring or peace inside himself
ate me up because i needed like tons of people's analysis to figure out this mv lmao
He explained everything in his album in Minimoni exchange album.
the song is so comforting for me, everytime i go on long walks or even hang out in a quiet space it’s my go to song..joon really took his time with this one (as he does with all his songs🤍)
To me, the woman in the gray dress represents the right kind of therapist who helps you understand yourself better & reminds you to be present in each situation. At least, that's a common theme in my discussions with my therapist.
Thank you for sharing this. I love your reactions and reviews.
The girl in the video is related to his emotions , all this time he locked his emotions(which is the main door he was trying to unlock but couldn’t)and was just living his life for the sake of living, trying his best for everyone’s sake, trying to be a perfect person but when he met his emotions (the girl) he found out that he can live his life according to his emotions, he can live his life without being perfect, and suddenly in end ,the girl comes and guide him through the maze which signifies that he will follow his emotions because thats what makes him feel closer to himself.
(I know i could be wrong but by far this is best explanation i got, even i am surprised by my own synopsis for RM’s MV)💜
Leave a like if you liked it.
I enjoyed your interpretation. I think I see it similarly. Facing and embracing that same self that one keeps running away from, is the key to peace. I miss this type of video analysis of you..
I feel like the girl represents Spring. She's looking for him and then when she finds him she offers to lead him through the maze of life. Especially the part where he's in the crib, he has had so many things pushed on him, such high expectations and he's sick of it. It has drained him emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. He is just looking for a way out and a way to his authentic self so he can live the life HE wants and creates
Simply the more you listen to these songs the more you love them. When speaking with Pharrell Williams they both discussed judging how good your lyrics were by how painful they were to write. Pain divine= creativity? Director of this was the director of BEEF.
This and Domodachi have been my favorite music videos this comeback. The storytelling choices have been so engaging and up-my-alley artistically
Excelent reaction 💜
I was waiting for RM reaction. He’s amazing. ❤️🔥 Like your reactions. 🤗🇹🇷
Enjoyed your commentary and insights. Wouldn't we like to hear him discuss the album over lunch.❤
Yes, it is like a movie!! Omg the same director as "Beef"?! You were spot-on then saying it was like a Netflix show haha!
2 RM reactions in 1 day from PD?!?!?! Nice!!!
you look so good! loving the new look!
I love your interpretation and deep dive on this!!!
The MV was produced by the director from the movie Bear.
the last scene reminds me of the netflix show OA, you know when they show the true nature of multi-dimensional reality and how all the timelines are occuring all at once
Really thoughtful reaction - thanks!
You're thoughts and visions of joon's songs are always amazing ❤ he's truly a genius ❤
