  • Here’s a simple method to have a long burning fire in your back yard or camping. Swedish Torches will burn for hours, providing light, heat and a good cooking spot.
    This centuries old technique has been used for light, warmth and cooking. It is a very compact and manageable way to achieve those needs. Keeping one or two in your camping supplies is a great way to quickly start cooking or having light.
    You’ll need a drill, an auger or spade bit at least 1” in diameter, a chainsaw and some dry kindling.
    First, choose a good, well seasoned log. The wood shouldn't be too dry. If it is, it will burn too quickly. Choose the right wood for your needs. For quick heat, lots of flame and quick start, pick resinous softwoods such as pine, fir or spruce. If you will want to cook on them, select. hardwoods like beech, oak, apple, ash or cherry.
    Next secure the log and drill a 1" to 1-1/2" spade bit directly down the center of the log. Go as deep as you can, about 2/3rds for lenght of the log.
    With a chainsaw, cut several vertical slits. Between 2 to4 cuts, creating 4 to 8 sections, should do the trick.
    Your Swedish Torch is almost ready.
    Gather and save some of that dry sawdust or other dry tinder to gently drop down the hole. Shavings of Fatwood are excellent starters. Ignite and enjoy.

    Funny fact: the "Swedish torches" were first created and used by Finnish lumberjacks. I don't know how they became Swedish.

    I make my cuts off center. That creates a center hole without drilling.

    Thank you! Do you got to add dry wood constantly or just enough so it stars the flame and then not add more?

      No need to add any more than required to get it started. it will burn on it's own for hours.

    Hello, could you have used the woodchip from making the torch?

    If your saw is sharp, the shavings will work as the kindling, but don’t bother if you’re just making sawdust.

    It looks like your center drill doesn't go all the way through. Is that accurate or a consequence of drill bit length?

    • @JoshMeeder
      @JoshMeeder  Год назад

      It is intentional. You want to leave at least a third of the log at the bottom of the hole. Otherwise it will burn through and break apart quickly

      @@JoshMeeder That makes perfect sense. Thank you!

    The center hole is unnecessary, saw cuts will create a similar space. Making the cuts length wise into the side is more efficient than cutting into the end.

    Can you set a pan on this and cook? Or will the pan choke out the fire?
    Put a grill on top?...
    Uses?

      I haven't tired to set a pan on top, but i would imagine it would work. There should be enough air flow from the cuts. I use them for lighting at outdoor gatherings. They are good in a pinch for a little heat too.

    Is the log old and dry or new?

      dry or seasoned logs are the best

    Nice ::)
    ... I tend to be in the woods so end up splitting them and then tying them together... I finally using a wedge when tying them together sends more air through and makes it easier to light inrougher conditions...

    Is there a trick to keep it from smoking so much? We are not “allowed” to have bonfires in our neighborhood…. Mind you, worse part is that it’s a SMALL FARM TOWN!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ Anyways, I thought maybe it’d be a good alternative to minimum be able to make smores and hot dogs. Those timeless family/childhood memories we all love…. And we can’t do it!?! Ridiculous
