Hi Tony, So sorry for your loss, we'll be keeping you in our prayers for comfort and strength. My husband and I were both widowers, so there is some hope for another true love. It will take some time, try to get out, walk around, go to the cafe, etc.; force yourself to get out, even if you don't feel like it. I've always had dogs, and they helped keep me company when I lost my better-half. We are also classic car buffs and we meet many great people at car shows, possibly you could attend a few, to meet some new people. I wish you all the best!

A lot of folks downplay the role of advisors until being burnt by their own emotions. I remember couple summers back, after my lengthy divorce, I needed a good boost to help my business stay afloat, hence I researched for licensed advisors and came across someone of utmost qualifications. She's helped grow my reserve notwithstanding inflation, from $275k to $850k.

Excellent topic Azul!! Definitely agree with your points. Here are my TOP 10 - thoughts/points to maximize life in your 50's and 60's
    1. Take great care of yourself- Eat less, take naps, don't smoke or drink, for exercise consider, yoga, swimming, indoor biking, weight training and of course Pickleball.
    2. Get a dog- a big fun loving dog like a Golden Retriever. Your wife will ignore you and your kids are in their own world, but the dog will always love you.
    3. New friends- get some new friends who truly respect you and who you can speak with .
    4. Massage- when the world finds you unattractive a good massage will always make you feel good.
    5. Keep track of your time- at the end of each day spend a few minutes and write down what you did during the day. Now plan out your next day.
    6. Keep constantly learning with RUclips. Curate your top videos into folders to have ready to listen to.
    7. Keep working at least part time- unless you are extremely wealthy, more money is always good to have, especially when you are forced to retire.
    8. Travel can be overrated- unless you are going to someplace you love with great people, don't feel obligated to travel.
    9. Become spiritual- whether you are religious or not, pray and follow some religious belief. Study Stoicism.
    10. Make peace with the past- the majority of us have not reach our goals and we have made many mistakes along the way. Love and forgive yourself and just do better with the remaining years of your life. Always focus on what you can control.

I think the retirement crisis will get even worse. A lot of people can’t save because of low paying jobs, inflation, and insane rental rates. And now that home ownership is out of reach for middle class Americans, they won’t have a house to retire with either.

Alot of wisdom in this. I retired 2 years ago from teaching dentistry. Several of my friends at work said, "You'll be back in a few months." I knew better. I looked at others who had retired, some happy in retirement, some languishing. I realized a year before retirement that you don't want to sleepwalk into retirement. You need to have a plan, you need to remain engaged in life and engaged with people. I decided that in retirement I would use this new gift of time to learn new skills and rehabilitate old ones that had fallen away. Well in advance of retirement day I compiled a list of about 15 things that I wanted to try out. It was intentionally way more than I could ever get to so that if one didn't work out I'd move on to the next one without spreading myself too thin. It's worked out beautifully so far and my wife and I are loving every day. It's been a permanent summer vacation and we feel blessed.

1966 here. We were the first generation test pieces of the 401(k) with no pensions in our life. I got very lucky that I married a woman I was with for 20 years who had a very sensible view on money because she grew up in Bosnia in the 70s. My parents modeled terrible financial behavior because my dad had military full benefits, and my mother had a government job. In the end, for us 58-year-old who made a good living at least for half of our adult life if we can approach $1 million net worth overall by the time we’re 62 or 63 I think we’ve done pretty good in spite of our impulsiveness and being a product of that generation. Hetta people born in 1966. It was a bad ass year.

I have watched a couple of your posts this evening, and you are making a lot of sense to me. With regards to time and health, you are sooo correct. I am working shift hours in what could be described as a manual job. I am not overworked but I can be the guy who has to climb on top of a bulk storage tank at 3 in the morning. I am getting too old for this!!! I have discovered disconnecting from people who are negative in my life is so important. I dont need their stuff anymore. I would suggest one more thing, maybe stop being the best employee. When redundancy packages come around, I find they dont like to offer them to the "essential" folk. I work for a big multinational. I am just a number when it suits them and the "essential" guy also. I plan to get out of here with my dignity and my health in four years. I am posting this at 5 in the morning btw. Have subscribed sir, keep them coming.

People my age are “the good employees” not for raises, because they don’t see us as the future for our age. But for overtime and loading us with work by running short staffed. We are clearly fools because we were taught a work ethic that was based on a time when we weren’t all just stats. That’s why I’m listening to Azul, trying to get the nerve. You are smarter, planning ahead. I’m already 60 and hoping to be able to retire at 62. Still won’t have the money, so working on a strategy. Using these videos to be ready to pull the plug on decades of free OT on a salary job. Might have to work PT, but hope to salvage what’s left of my health before it’s too late. So wish I’d started thinking about this years ago. Oh well, can’t go backwards.

As someone in his mid 70s, I can attest to the benefits of these ideas. I spent my 60s in self-improvement and have never been happier. I don't need a "bucket list" I describe myself in the present rather than as "former or retired xxxx". Now, I am "the long haired old man who walks the dog in the neighborhood".

Great advice Azul, I spent 32 years breaking sales records and surrounded with extroverts selling commercial insurance.
The combination of having to always be on, likeable, personable and even inspiring to clients and new sales reps. This along with being in a very negative industry or product took a lot of my energy. I’m not an extrovert… I’m actually more of an introvert or even a Sigma.
I retired after 32 years of being who I needed to be not who I am. It’s the best feeling in the world to feel that way and not care if I’m not living up to others expectations but only my own.

In the last year I started noticing the passing of time with the simple act of taking the trash out every week. It’s one of those mundane tasks that only takes a few minutes but it started giving me pause to think about how my trash and recycling reflect how I am living my life week to week. I started thinking about what I was tossing that was thoroughly used up and enjoyed, what was wasted, what was or wasn’t my plan to eat better, buy less, etc. It prompted me to start a game with myself to not have anything in my trash or recycling that I don’t want to be there when I out it out the next week.

The first one you mentioned struck me. Friends come and go, sure, but I had a best friend for many years when I was young and just tolerated his actions for many years until it got so much worse because I was essentially allowing him to be disrespectful. Evidently it did something for him and he did this usually in front of others, so maybe he felt it made him look better. I warned him once. Little things would happen still, but was a bumpy boat ride, not hitting rocks, until he did hit rocks and I didn’t warn him after that. I had The Discussion and it was never the same between us again and eventually dropped out of each other’s lives completely. This was in my 30’s - so yes, if you have someone like that get rid of them. While it is too bad, I don’t regret it.

The first thing she did on her own when she got the hang of it was find a senior's dating site. She met a wonderful Portuguese man who she married and they retired together to Portugal in 2018. She got herself a smart phone and because of her existing tech knowledge I had taught her, she taught herself to use ot. She also got on social media. We talk via Facebook Messenger text and video calls regularly. My mother was ALWAYS an open minded person. She migrated to Australia at age 21 from the Canary Islands with my father, myself age 2, and my brother age 3. She taught herself to speak English by listening to the radio. I've inherited the same trait. I moved back to the Canaries on my own age 20-24, I'm bilingual and have 5 degrees. I homeschool my 15 year old son. Because I have to prepare him for the future, it forces me to stay up-to-date with technology and information in order to be able to firstly, understand it myself so that secondly, I can teach it to him. I've already embraced Chat GPT. The future looks bright!

I was listening I promise! But at 8:00 a deer walked out by that tree behind you and caught my eye. Drove home the message that I'd rather be like you today than me. I'm in the thinking stage but I REALLY appreciate these messages you share.

Fantastic advice, thank you. I think regrets are very useful. Yes, forgive yourself, but learn the lessons that become available from your regrets. And not just "Well, I won't do THAT again", but the deeper lessons, like, "What was I really needing that made me do that?"

I may have pulled the trigger to retire a little early but I didn’t see me building my cabin in the mountains in ten more yrs. It may be a little harder but I think about it drinking coffee in the morning on the south deck.

Yep! I'm 55 now at 53 I quite my life long dream job that required me to work 12 hr days 6 days a week, while on "vacation" I was always on my computer for work.... I woke up one Monday morning and told my wife I'm tired of my life, my job, and want to know what its like to enjoy my life... She was waiting for those words after being married to me and my job for 30 years, I called a friend of mine and asked if they were hiring, and yeppers they were! I was ready for change! I left my security blanket job, took a 60k cut in wage a year and I haven't regretted it to this day! I go to work at 6-am and I'm off at 2:30-pm m-f! No overtime! No weekends! 15 paid holidays! 5 weeks of uninterrupted PTO days! I'm in flipping heaven!!

I was an investment advisor. The advice in the video is excellent and true for the typical American. But for people who have a good portfolio of about $5m, if you look around, most people are still active at 70 (I live in LA) but by 80, not so much, so enjoy yourself at some point before it’s too late. That nice vacation will pay for your last week in the nursing home. There is a difference between wasting money and spending it. Be value-conscious.

I agree entirely. I recently retired at the age of 54 with about $1.9 million outside retirement savings, no debt. To be really honest, the Fin-advisor's position can only be minimized. Just find a trustworthy one. It is very different from spending money to spend it on possibilities and things that might not materialize any time soon. Being value-conscious is crucial, as you indicated.

More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

The increasing prices have impacted my plan to retire at 62, work part-time, and save for the future. I'm concerned about whether those who navigated the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am currently experiencing. The combination of stock market volatility and a decrease in income is causing anxiety about whether I'll have sufficient funds for retirement.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.
