I never tire of watching this swap and the shop talk regarding the components used.
Thanks Rich! Awesome meeting you bud! Let me know when you’re in Milwaukee again so I can put some different tires on and I’ll get this boost leak fixed ;-)
Derek Michael
Bad ass truck want to do this to my 95 k2500 with a dead 6.5
Haha I seen the wauatosa water tower! Crazy to see him here, small world
Derek Michael I figure that your steering shafts are of high quality, but I want you to sell it to me (sell me on your product). Why do I need your shaft instead of an xj shaft or some similar upgrade?
Jay Miller the Jeep shaft only works on the 88-94 trucks.. (I make all years) also need to modify it which is fine If you have the means to do so.. I build my shafts in-house here that drops right in and if the joint ever fails it’s rebuildable like a ujoint instead of buying a all new shaft
Derek Michael Thanks for the reply.
Rich's smile when he is in rides like this is infectious.....looks like a kid on Christmas morning!!
A big Wow at how the 90s would have been different if gm would have had the Cummins instead of dodge. I'm mostly a dodge truck guy but I'm also partial to gmt 400 trucks. I love this swap.
I think it’s hilarious nobody wants to put a homosexual Japanese Isuzu into any Dodge truck however people with the Chinese Chevrolet and Ford with the power less Hi I want to have the Dodge diesel. There’s a better way to go about it just don’t buy the garbage and get the Dodge and the all done have styling quality good looks
@@Kramer63 Just curious, where does the Isuzu fit into this picture, and how do you know it's homosexual? Did one ask you out?
And I'm not sure about the Dodge quality...I owned a 94 Ram 2500 with a 12 valve; that engine was the only redeeming aspect of it. The rest of the truck was falling apart, the front end couldn't hold an alignment in a wicker basket, and that auto was a dead man walking.
Also, it wasn't a "Dodge engine." It was a Cummins engine, manufactured by Cummins and provided under contract to Dodge for its pickups (many of which were assembled in Mexico...mine was, even said it on the tag in the driver's side door jamb).
Don't get me wrong; I loved that Dodge and would have kept it were it not for the auto and other unrelated circumstances...and I do like the FFPW throwback styling. But I also really like my current Chevy K2500 and would love to swap the 454 for a 12v, if I did enough driving it to justify the cost of the swap and the higher fuel cost...
@@Edhooey in case you didn’t know what the dirty max is made by Isuzu
General motors was a total failure and trying to make anything worse than Eastland you never put in semi‘s in the history of the world the Detroit diesel and they have the early 80s Chevrolet pick ups for the gas engine converted to be diesel also was in a bunch of Oldsmobile cars total flop. So that’s why they went to the Japanese diesel engine manufacturer for their light truck
General Motors she’s always specialized screwing up anything and everything ever touches General Motors could even screw up a wet dream
@@Kramer63 And yet nobody wants the old dodges or fords from the 90s except with the cummins or powerstroke, but 90s chevys are still in high demand and they're still everywhere.
He's a good dude. I am running one of his steering shaft on my 98 K 3500
Not that the question was asked but you can do a mechanical fan in this truck . I just finished getting my 97 crew cab dually put together and I was able to use a mechanical fan from an old mdt f650 that originally had a Cummins so it had a stubby fan . Dodge fan does not work . Just for anybody who was interested . Cool rig man
that gmt400 life. great trucks, I've got a friend with a 6.5 dually with a perfect body/interior that he gave up on fixing I want to get - glad to hear a 5.9 fits so well
LOVE THAT TRUCK! Been trying to find a 90s crew cab Silverado or Sierra for a while and they are REALLY hard to find. He did exactly what I would want to do to that truck!!!! ❤
Just went back and watched this because I'm 12 valve swapping my 2000 k3500 chevy. Did a solid axle swap last year and now it's getting the 12 valve cummins so it will perform better at the truck pull competitions
Gotta love GMT400 Cummins swaps. I got a regular cab K3500 with a 6.5. I don't actually mind the 6.5 and have done quite a bit of heavy towing with it. I regularly tow a 10k 5th wheel with it, but I would love to have a 12 valve in there for the extra power.
TDK Repair i have a white smoking 6.5 with 100,000 miles on it any suggestions have you ever had that issue ?
That is remarkably low miles for one of these old trucks! Mine is getting close to 250k. I would guess most likely injectors. I just replaced mine in my truck, they are a wear item to be replaced every 100k miles. It made a big difference in smoothness and power. However, I can't guarantee that. Does it keep smoking after it heats up?
TDK Repair I have a regular cab 1999 K3500 with a 6.5 as well. I tow all sorts of stuff around with it
I think they are great engines that get a lot of crap from people who haven't owned one. Its not gonna have crazy torque numbers like newer engines, but I have grossed over 20k lbs combined for 1800 miles.
Good setup obs with 12v 😍
Rich, Your smile was as large as mine when the Cummins fired! Derek, well done with; out with the 6.5 and in with the 5.9!! Much love from the concrete jungle know as Toronto.
Definetly the best thing he could have done for that truck. Those 6.5’s were dogsss
And they also couldn’t make it 10 feet without the computer going haywire and leaving you stranded 😂
Buying a '96 K3500 crew cab dually this weekend w/ the 6.5 diesel. Cummins and manual swap would make it into my dream truck. Love this swap!
Love the rides features. It's cool seeing the creations of others especially the diesel swaps!
I Got a 96 k3500 dully with a 12v in it. can confirm actually rides REALLY well
That truck is beyond bad ass.
Dawson Lambert thanks bud
GMT-400 or Squarebodies are some of the finest trucks ever produced. Putting a 12v under the hood makes a dream truck.
I Keep Thinking About Putting a 12v in my 88 C3500 Ext cab Dually
Big Papa 254 do it, film it, show us. Good luck.
Big Papa I like the way you think. 😁
Big Papa 254 same here except with my 95 K2500 Ext Cab SRW.
Quit thinking about it! And Just Do it. Projects never started are never finished!!!
Did you do it?
I am always fond of cars like this. Beaten up but still runs smooth
Also for everyone curios the clutch pedal mentioned pertains to the 99-07 gm trucks to replace the plastic clutch pedal with a metal pedal
Thought I mention this because it wasn’t very clear in the video.
Great job on the swap and GMT800 brake conversion. I'm looking to do this swap on my '95 and don't want to spend a boatload of money on engine mounts. Do you have any pictures or other content on how you made your mounts? Any details/ advice greatly appreciated.
Cool build. I considered buying a 98 2500 with a 6.5 in it a few years back with the idea of doing a similar build for a farm truck. Didn't happen. It was pretty clean though for a northern Ohio truck.
Find one with a 454. 6.5s are reliable motors. 454s are a dime a dozen
Ironic that I watched this video when it was released and here I am 5 years later having just bought my neighbors 99 k3500 with the exact same plans
love these videos, regularly watch the cummins tahoe series
Im also going to be Cummins swapping my k3500 crew cab as well!
John Selby what trans are you useing ???
Nice job, great rig! Can't beat those 12 valve Cummins. Wouldn't want one of those new Cummins Dodge is using now.
Gmt400 are the last great GM truck, always on the lookout for a 99/00 crew 4x4 not rusty
Dave M why not a fan of the gmt800? Just curious. I thought having rear disc brakes was a good step and correct me if im wrong but doesn't the 800s have a better frame?
Gmt800 is my favorite too. The only thing I don't like about them is the balljoints and 4l60e's. Otherwise they'll go forever and are a lot more fuel friendly
Only good thing is 5.3or6.0 bout 99-07 style rest is junk I'll keep my 88-95s all day
This seems to be a moving target, when the GMT800 trucks were being made, it seemed like everyone was raving about the 73-87 trucks. Now we've just moved up one generation!
the 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 8.1 are all the same engines with bigger displacement lol. Plus theres no doubt that the duramax diesels in the gmt800's are way better than the gmt400's detroit diesels, thats why i like the gmt800s
I Love people who do things like this and laugh the whole when they describe it
Proper use of a Cummins
I wish I had a few hours just to pick y'alls brain.
I have one of his steering shaft best thing ever
Dream truck right there
I actually just bought a 96 c3500 to screw around with yesterday
Looks about like my swapped back in it's beginning stages 😂going back to the solid axle talk I'd say it's definitely not needed at stock height to about 3" of lift but past that a solid front axle definitely helps make driving livable.
YES. ABOUT TIME. imma do this to my Suburban
That was cool. Thx Rich
I would love this swap in a 91-01 3500hd.
Excellent work.
That steering shaft is a good idea...Gonna have to get myself one!
Love this truck definitely louder in person lol
98 Chevy k1500 Ryan should’ve came with bud haha
I know lol maybe next time.
Good ol' Butler, Wisconsin haha
I love the 6.5L... but for an engine swap the stock 6.5L Motor mounts can not/should not be reused they are garbage... the 6.5L is a great engine and very fuel efficient, but GM wanted to sabotage it's reputation in the Mid to late 90's... All the accessories and infrastructure supporting the engine (PMD on Injection pump, vac pump that controls the turbo, lift pump, harmonic balancer, motor mounts) are all garbage.... The need to be dealership proofed almost like the 6.0L Powerstroke. The main difference between dealership proofing a 6.5L Detroit and a 6.0L Powerstroke is that the 6.5L doesn't need any actual internal engine work, only to fix the Accessories and engine infrastructure. Where as the 6.0L Powerstroke needs head studs and a good $8,000-$12,000 worth of dealership proofing, but the 6.5L can be bomb proofed for $1,000-$2,000 depending on what you go for in terms of quality.
Mach SCGA 6.0 doesn’t need bullet proofing it’s weak. Just doing regular maintance and you won’t have issues
fordfocuszx93 that's not what I hear, the only time I know of a stock 6.0L not needing a ton of extra work off the dealership lot is when it has comericial tuning.
Mach SCGA thank you for this information, I have a 6.2 and had no idea we’re to even begin. Much appreciate
Roberto Frausto your welcome.... If I'm not mistaken the 6.2L was never turbocharged, so if you have a turbocharger it is either after market or someone put a 6.5L turbo on it (and probably an electronic Injection pump with the PMD issues) you can turbo them with the mechanical Injection pump but it takes some fiddling and manual tuning... Be careful with putting boost on these engines they only need 5-10psi, they are on a 21.5:1 compression because they were designed to be Naturally asperated engines. So if you throw in too much boost you will have head gasket problems.
Mach SCGA 6.5 was junk 350 chev converted to gas there was a reason they got rid of them
Freakin love these videos Rich! Thanks man!
Hey Rich, have you ever done an in depth video about "blow by"? If so, could you send me the link or tag me in it or something? That's something I'd like to watch.
Not yet. I'll try and keep it in mind. There are different ways to check it
DEBOSS GARAGE, okay, awesome. I know of the oil cap trick, but that's about it. My 24 valve Cummins has some blow by, just curious what route I should take with the truck.
Now i know what im doin witg my c3500 when the engine dies... Very nice
The best thing is all the weigh reduction! Encourage more rust!
I want a cummins in my first gen dodge so bad
Damn I want one of these trucks
Thanks guys
Awesome video. This guy knows his shit!!!
Mr. Deboss your going to be an old man by the time I get my truck together. Will probably have the boxer cummins by then. But I hope you have me on your channel 👍
Cool ride
Looks like hell. I love it!
Thanks for the video
That is more Milwaukee Wisconsin my home state
Nice project
Very cool, maybe someone will do this to a 6.0 ford.
I'm waiting for that review and if you know anyone who has done it, I would love to talk to them. There is a guy in town that tried it in a Ranchero but the wiring got to him and it is yet to be finished (4 years).
steamsoldier join the groups “fummins” and “fummins tech” on Facebook there’s tons of write ups
Is that Derek Michael?
One of these days I'll 6BT and NV5600 or ZF6 in my RCSB 97 GMC K1500 😫
Love it. This is my dream build.
Tape boss shirt... I want one
1:41 me to my wife like last week haha
And RUclips loves you, Rich!
GMT400s kick ass!!
Deboss garage is the shit👍🏼
Love it!
Do you think an 8.3 Cummins would fit in the obs ?maybe with electric front mount fans?
12 valve Cummins turbo diesel powered engine 5.9L in-line 6 cylinder on Chevy Silverado K3500.
Belo projeto !qual a caixa de marcha esta usando ?🇧🇷👍🏾
Anyone here in 22 and about shit their pants when he said “I bought the truck for 1500$” today that truck would probably sold for 10k in auction or something
Quadrasteer in the background at 7:25
Steven Vanheel good catch
Is there any way to find out how this build ended up? I am doing a swap myself and I am very interested in how the suspension upgrade went it’s hard to find parts for these 8lugs. Thanks
Is he still making those drive shafts?
I'm interested in where you got that Cat oil filter and the kit used to make it work
Hey Derek love the truck man!! Iam bout to endure a swap just like this my self and unsure what to do with a few things!! Guess the main thing is did u use the stock front end setup in that Chevy?? Torsion bars control arms etc!? And if so do you think a 2500 front end of one will work also and is the ride as good as before with putting that 12v in it!? Any feedback would be great thanks!!
The owner reminds me of Mike Finnegan
Now if it had a dana 60
Up front🙌🏻
Can I get more info on the brake upgrades? I want to swap the brakes on my k3500 also
You have my dream truck
Just starting my 99 Gm 3500 4x4. Taking 5.7 and 4L80 out putting 94 12 valve and 47 RH trans in. Derek said he used 1st Gen insulator and home made motor mounts. I've looked at many different mounts. would like more clearance oil pan to front diff. ANY suggestions would help. Thanks : HEMI
i have a 99 suburban that iv basically rebuilt because the family 97 suburban rotted out i got the starcraft interior and i just rebuilt the 350 vortec and put that in would that count as a build to share or no? also this was done in a garage thats only 8ft tall almost no proper/ good tools either
They wouldnt rent rich a car cant imagine they had a cummins to rent u an didnt want the rental comin back with one lols
«Depends on who I am racing»
My rear view mirror took a chunk out the windshield.
That dude took like 13 selfies
Only way to keep a chevy running
ThatGray24v pffft
Did he missspeak or is that actually an nv3500 behind a Cummins 😂
How difficult would it be to do a cummins swap on a 95 C3500 dually? Currently 6.5, nv4500 trans.
Hows it possible for people to only drove 35k a year? I bought my dodge last december and ive put 102000 kms on it in a year
Derek Michael do you happen to know where I can get the adapter to run the cat oil filter on my 12 valve engine ? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Nice!!
Where's you get the adapter plate from engine to transmission
Y’all think there’s a difference if I do a 12v swap into my 99 k2500 ?
Sluggos what kind of place is that
Do you know what he was getting for gas mileage just curious
After all the mods and the way Derek drives, not great
DEBOSS GARAGE stop it... haha on a good day I can see 22mpg freeway/empty city 16-18
Sucks the body is so rusty, but then again it's Canada, so that is probably considered ''not too bad'' up there.
Harv they’re in Milwaukee
Harv that’s my truck I’m in Milwaukee, Wisconsin rust is pretty bad here. The truck is rusty but is infact very solid.. it’s a plow truck and I use it for hauling stuff I’m leaving it that way so if I drop something off the side of the bed it won’t bother me to much haha
Derek Michael Smart. plus fenders are cheap lol
Brandon Ruhl meh
Nice job man!!!! Do you know if a nv4500 from a 94 chevy will work? I have a 90 dodge and a 88 chevy 1 ton with a 454 I want to swap over
Doug Noe the 94 nv will not work. Although I can make a kit to make it work everything provided but bell housing if interested
Yo Derek I need help .. Im doing the Cummins swap on my 95 gmc that had the nv4500 n was thinking if I could use my trans, been looking for videos how I can make it work.. people say it’s doable but seem like I can’t fine any ..either going with a dodge nv4500 which more money for it.. I’m stuck here hopefully u can help mi out ??
That is so adorable even a gay person appreciates the Strait of quality of a Dodge diesel. He can still go to the gay bar still hang out with all the other nice gentleman but have the efficiency and reliability of the Dodge diesel
I would like to find an older square body chevy and the put an in line 5 cylinder deutz. Still unsure if I could find a way to make it bolt up anyone have any thoughts ?
