You're missing the point in my opinion, this car isn't designed to be a gti. It's a sporty car that has pretty much everything the gti has it without the running costs. The gtd is one of the best all rounders you can buy
Sport sound?? I had GTD 2014 older version and I have better sound in sport mode. This new GTD facelift doesnt have this sound noise, why do they do this shit? Older version sport sound is better.
For me personally it makes some sense. Most GTI drivers buy it for the looks rather than its performance capabilities. So getting a GTI look-alike at a fraction of the price while saving at the pumps is a BONUS!!! Makes sense to me...
@Pop Laurentiu: The GTD is for people who drives far every day. The presenter dosen't mention this, so its probably not that common in South Africa :) But en EU 30.000, 40.000 or even 50.000 km pr year isn't that uncommon. The GTI and GTE are too expensive to drive with that amount of km.
Had my manual gtd for 6 month, 16 plate with 70000, got it stage 1 remapped 2 months ago. It is the best all round car I have ever owned. Maybe not the quickest. But build quality, performance and it's a joy to drive. 100 percent recommend this car to anyone
No issues at all the car is running at just under 230 bhp so it's not been pushed to the limit on the stage 1. I am lead to believe that anything above that is when u will need to modify a few more things for the turbo to be able to cope with the power
No problems at all. I took my time finding a place that had really good reviews. It cost around £500 to get it done which is more than other places but would rather spend the money and get it done correctly
The reason VW make the GTD is down to the market. In the UK the GTD massively out sells the GTI. You would struggle to see a GTI on British roads, but GTD’s are plentiful. I’ve had one for the last 3 years, but as diesel cars are starting to get a bit of bad press in the UK, I skipped the GTI and went to a 310 BHP R 🚙😈😉
Best golf I have owned good performance plus great fuel economy in the UK where we get ripped off on fuel prices. VW build quality is far superior to other cars in this sector.
I bought the gtd 2016. With sport and sound. Coming from a bmw f30 this car is amazing. Everything is quality. It just looks slightly better than the gti as well. My total consumption for about 3000km is 6.1l/100km. Its the perfect car it has everythinf
Being the diesel variant it was expectedly gona have the least power, but it was supposed to make up for it by having more torque. I understand it's built to be the more economic variant but it could have been a torque monster aswell
I drive a Gtd and now that the motor has reached 45,000 km and is well run In and with BP diesel . The car really runs much better and I rarely hav to use S mode .
I enjoy the fuel efficiency of diesel engines and with practicality of golf, may consider this. But price and what I can get for similar money also needs to be considered
Golf GTE is the hybrid brother of GTD & GTi and is a better option on long term specially if we consider the fact that Volkswagen will ditch the diesel engines and diesel cars will be soon banned worldwide after that horrible Dieselgate scandal..
I full tanked my gtd drove from london to darlington an back to london still had just over quarter tank love every bit of the journey there an tbe journey back
Slightly confused, you said GTD and GTi have same torque (in the UK) the GTi has 350 Nm and the GTD has 380 Nm... The R has 380 Nm are you getting them mixed up? Or is it different where you are?
if you check the golf GTD has same 380 Nm like the golf R but the difference is the engine type GTD is a TDi common rail diesel from a 2.0L with 184 PS the Golf R is TSI petrol from a 2.0 L turbocharged enngine that produce 300 PS/296bhp.. so this GTD has risen from previously 350 Nm (258 lbs ft) to 380 Nm (280 lbs ft) available from just 1,750 rpm but can muster only 0-60 mps = 7,5 s and top speed 227 km/h but the GTD has lower consumption over the R because even though the engine is has the same size as GTD 2.0 L the Golf R’s engine has a modified cylinder head, exhaust valves, valve seats and springs, pistons, injection valves and larger intercooler and turbocharger. DSG equipped models also come with an auxiliary oil cooler on the passenger side. That means that the 0-60 mph time takes 5.1 seconds with manual gearbox (versus 5.7 seconds for previous Golf R), or 4.9 seconds with optional DSG gearbox. In 3rd-party testing, it has been recorded at 4.5 seconds using Launch Control available in Golf R. The top speed of Golf R is electronically limited to 155 miles per hour that is (249~250 km/h). Despite this increased performance, a "combined fuel consumption" of 39.8 miles per imperial gallon (7.10 L/100 km; 33.1 mpg‑US), and CO2 emissions of 165 g/km (159 g/km DSG) so the Nm are the same but the react and the different pulling of the car and consumption is the main different things that can be spotted and feel only after you drive both models Golf GTD vs Golf R.. i hope this will clear you out better ! ( ;_;)
Pop... im sure Colin knows all of what you mention.... he was merely reffering to the torgue thats all.... lol.... Colin i assume they detune them slightly due to the heat and lower grade fuel.. etc
With fuel price increases going through the roof the Golf GTD is starting to make sense. Yes it doesn't have the performance of the GTI but as everyday car it would be my choice.
With the GTD badge comes the GTI styling and GTI's suspensios. The audi a3 or the seat leon only get a more powerfull engine with this 184 tdi, but no modification on the style or the suspension or anything else.
Mihai Onu That's true, but it's a bit of a shame to pay for the styling and suspension of the GTI without the performance. Maybe they should have fitted the 240ps Bi-TDI unit from the Passat to make it a real GTI competitor?
The problem with the bi-tdi is the torque, it has so much that will make the front tyres spin like crazy, thus needing the 4motion. Add the 4 motion, the bi-tdi engine and the price will be similar to the golf R probably, plus the added fuel consumption. The GTD is not meant to be driven on the track, it's made for the people who do a lot of miles per year, need good fuel economy, and also a bit more sportiness than the regular golf. In my opinion, the GTD is in it's natural habitat when dooing constant high speed cruising on the highways. The GTI is faster, more fun, but cost you more when you drive many miles.
The GTD is a fleet car! In the UK the GTD is the best selling single trim level of the Golf by far! Its designed to appeal to the company car driver. It was never really made to appeal to the general public. You have to imagine a scenario were you get presented with a picture of a white BMW 3 series and a Golf GTD and told....."Pick one!"
Not a bad review, more about your personal opinion than a review on the GTD. However, I feel you miss the point on the GTD V's GTI. Consumers for a hot hatch will always look at petrol 1st, so petrol heads looking for frills will choose a GTI and not go for the GTD for the less power etc like you mention - but I get your sarcasm. What makes GTD's sell in the UK is diesel buyers wanting a hot hatch will totally go for the GTD, not the GTI so they are getting fairly hot / resectable performance and excellent fuel economy compared to the GTI offering. BTW I have the MK 7 DSG GTD and the R mk7.5 DSG, never had a problem with the steering wheel gear selector flaps, perhaps you've got pigs t1ts for fingers buddy? Next review please try and cover more about the car, what it has, does good and badly etc, less about what you don't understand about it ;-) Anyhow, all the very best. AJ

what with the stupid Golfs comparison? there is nothing complicated about the offerings. GTI for carrying the hot hatch heritage. GTD for range, while giving you a fun handling car on the twisty stuff. economic doesn't have to mean boring drive. as for the scandal, it wasn't that big a deal. what gear head don't wish for an emmissions cheating program? and it's not the worst offence ever committed by an auto manufacturer.
Did not hear about the better alternative specially for the fuel consumption the Golf GTE and also regarding the fact that very soon all diesel engines will be dropped/banned world-wide.. ?!
This car makes sense to a person who currently drives a bluemotion polo and wants a sportier upgrade..i doubt it will be bought as much as the Gti,partly because it doesnt fart.
+Sean Dominko Hi Sean, thanks for the comment. This generation of the GTD is the first ever to be sold in our market, hence the commentary. Thanks for watching.
I had a mk 5 4wd gtd chipped it was probably the best car ive ever had. 4wd can handle the torque, vw need to make another one you can only buy a diesel estate with 4wd which just dosent look as good as the gtd.
You obviously did not understand what the GTD is built for. Obviously, people looking for a GTI won't buy the GTD instead. But people looking for the standard 150HP Diesel Golf may like the extra power, the sportive look and all the extras that the GTD offers.

Keep up the good work..
Abhishek Bourai The channel feeds on their actual website cars.co.za that's a platform to sell new and used cars here in South Africa. I guess in the interest of not trying to lose their followers of the platform where they also do written car reviews, they thought best to keep the name.

what you try to say ? the GTD is the diesel version of the petrol GTi.. but do not forget that is a hybrid too in this family the GTE (petrol +ev) which is the best choice for long term specially if we think at the dieselgate scandal and the diesel banning that will be soon world wide..
They have cars in Africa ? xD
