I swear you are always 3 weeks ahead of me. My machinist asked me to bring me the heads so he can port them, just had to tell him "wait, sloppy is going to test them for me first!"
I had gotten a screaming deal on a slightly _warped_ set of Cathedral *&* Square Port Chinese HiRam intakes, both with *102 Mike Mike* openings. The mounting flange was welded too hot, it only took -slight- surfacing to bring them in. HiRam is nothing for a FI engine, but the Alum. mass is sure to help inlet heat temps, at least over a plastic injection unit.
I knew what I was getting into. The guy was one of those people who get this shit from a "slow boat from China" and sell it. He "told me" that he looked into machining them, but he didn't want to do it. I guess he got most of his money back and decided to just make a little money off the "fixer upper" intakes.
Never took them to anyone.. put them on straight edge, slipped some feelers in, marked the surface with making compound, so when I started taking material off, I would know when to stop, make sure i'm not doing it uneven. I'm going to do a video about it on YT soon.
I have the same throttle body and intake on my setup and a stock intake and throttle body in my garage. So this will determine if I sell my tbss intake and go stock gen 3 truck and save money. Thanks Matt as always!
I have the same intake and fuel rails on my 2001 Silverado. I used a C5 fuel filter and fuel transfer hose to connect it to the factory lines. Works great.
I've been through this before in NA form with a with a 226/231 cam, interested in seeing your results as the dyno day for my tbss intake and 92 mm throttle body was 15-20°F hotter than with the gen 3 truck intake and 78mm tb. I saw zero rwhp gains but a 4 rwtrq gain, 6.0 th400. Looking forward to the tests
I just bought a TBSS intake for my 2002 5.3 Silverado with a BTR Stage 4 truck cam and 3200 Circle D stall. I'm interested with what you came up with to run the return to tank fuel rails (instead of mounting a bulky C5 fuel filter on the fuel rails like many suggest). Great work man! I'd love to see more on this buildup!!!
i have one of these intakes and the same china tb. the bolts on the tb blade are backwards from the one you have. philips head is on the inside of the motor. and when i screwed the tps on to the tb is smashes the passenger side of the tb blade into the housing and its starting to shave metal off of the tb bore and obviously the blade wont hardly move. im curious to see your experience with this tb. i contacted them and they seemed ok with giving me a refund. not sure if i just got a defective tb or its junk. i know other people that have used this tb with no issue, after using locktite on the blade bolts. keep up the good work. congrats on the baby!!!
I have used everybody’s data for the offset for the zr1 map. The only way I got it to work was with some bullshit number for the offset, otherwise the ecm scanner would read 300kpa while cranking and it would not start. I had to re tune my whole ve table. Maybe something I’m doing but my cobalt ss map I loved. It was pure plug and play as far as the ve table anyways.
Any chance you can make a video going in depth on how u modify or fab the gen 3 fuel rail to fit the tbss rail. Have a gen 3 5.3 and have been wanting to do this mod for a while now. Thanks
I think that’s the way chevy does it on the older tbi stuff. I wouldn’t want to bend the throttle shaft though, maybe put something behind it. I bet a tack weld would work just as well too.
I’m thinking of installing one on my truck and getting rid of the gen 3 truck intake. Will I need a tune after installing it with a 90mm throttle body?
Lsx Z32 the intake will gain a very little. It pairs best with a good head like the 243/799 heads. If you have a good flowing intake and shitty heads it's counterproductive.
Interested to see what you get, I've got the early LS1 intake in my truck and I've been eyeing these intakes for a while. I can't bring myself to spend $1k on a FAST. The Dorman LS2 is tempting, but I think this manifold still outperforms it.
WOW>>>>Very surprised you watch Soundman!! Small world. Are you a car audio guy also?? If so, you should do a sloppy mechanics type SPL build. Thats actually a damn good idea!!
fair enough. Thanks for all the free content over the years...its been a huge learning experience and hasnt cost me a dime. Keep up the good work. Allow me to put in a couple suggestions for future builds. Suggestion #1 ---1st gen explorer (91-94) because theyre everywhere for well under $1000, rear end is already done. 2 door sport version is available with a tad shorter wheelsbase and if you bother to lower it, they dont look that bad. The swap is quite easy..drop-in if you use truck oil pan. Need to fab motor mounts but I just found plans for them online so thats easy enough. And need to reprogram the stock computer orrr use the GM column, computer and harness (which I find to be a better solution). Then do your own gauge solution...like a cheap tablet mounted indash. (Even a 2nd gen explorer (95-01) can be found for dirty cheap and have that same 8.8 rear end except now with discs most of the time....factory posi on all of them I think...and stock they almost all had 3.55 gearing but some had 3.73 Im told. These trucks look far better, much more comfortable to drive. Ive had three of them..all with the mustang-ish 5.0v8 awd in them. Headers/manifolds would be very tight if you ran them conventionally but up and forward would likely work. Theres only one guy in the world who makes headers for these v8 2nd gen explorers because theyre such a pain in the ass to design....theyre killer build quality but cost me a fortune. I think I paid $900 or so after shipping. Suggestion #2 ---- Geo Tracker. There was one on drag week this year and I remember another being in a build thread on yellow bullet a couple years back. With the rear top off they look so killer. However would probably require quite a bit of cage to stiffen that tin can up enough for bigger power...and I know you arent a big fan of caging these vehicles. But with that top off the cage would look badass. Imagine how that would look fully backhalfed ?! Suggestion #2- B ----Along the same idea as the Geo Tracker....a Suzuki Samurai. Only issue being I think these are really coveted by the 4x4 crowd so they might be way over priced. Not to mention definitely much smaller than a Geo Tracker even. However, IF, the LS could fit then it would be that much more badass in this vehicle. Suggestion #3----one word......CHEVETTE sorry I get long winded and excited when swaps are brought up.
I'm about to swap a NNBS intake onto my gen3 LQ4 I've got it pretty much figured out just wondering if you know of any injector adapters to keep my stock harness and use the NNBS stock injectors. Thanks in advance
Thanks you for your videos and the teaching of guys like me. I scanned the head videos, didn't know if the videos were scanned over too quickly. Enjoy the time with the baby. My youngest is 15, but I didn't meet his mom until just after his first birthday. (I didn't make him, but he's my kid) Looking back, I am really disappointed that the first year stuff was missed. You'd think the older they get the easier it would be, but with his older brothers it was the exact opposite. There were only a few moments of peace over the holiday weekend, thus the scan and my questioning if something was missed.
The reason I was asking is because I switch to a l96 top end on my lq4 and had to use a fuel filter off a corvette to get the returnless fuel rail to work. Would love to go back to the return style rail.
Let us know if there are any tricks to get that throttle to idle right. I have the same set up but NA and have spent hours messing with it. I will get the iac counts perfect and an hour later it runs like shit.
John O'Brien the iac port is smaller on the 92 mm tb compared to factory when you compare the inlet and outlet of the iac port. So the ecu is calibrated to the stock iac valve and port, therefor a smaller iac port will not give the same results per opening of the iac valve as intended. I have one of these ebay 92 mm fast copy throttle bodies and enlarged the iac port in places. It helped a little in reducing the iac counts but still has issues on low speed parking lot cruising with surging. I have played with timing tables and many others, it's quite the battle but can get half decent.
Sloppy Mechanics Thanks Matt. It gets a little tricky modifying the inlet port because, depending on how far open the base throttle blade position is, it can make the inlet port peek over into the intake manifold side of the throttle blade. The outlet port is much smaller though than a factory tb so it seems more beneficial to play with that. Best of luck on everything. Strangely enough I initially tried an adapter with my 78 mm throttle body on a tbss intake and made the same power as with the 92 mm tb but without the low speed surging crap. However I think my 1 3/4" mid length headers were holding back gains from any additional airflow. Hopefully you have much better results.
Interesting, I'll pull the thing thing off this weekend and compare both. Matt, the voltage wasn't changing so I'm assuming the screw wasn't backing out.
corvette regulator is not great for high hp situation at all, failed us many times, i already have a return system, and return rails, i hear its minor modifications to fit them to this intake, presto chango
You should take a carbide bit to the sharp edges of the ports of the China throttle body. They whistle like a bitch until you round the edges off. (Think of blowing into a beer bottle)

i try haha, i am gunna push for a dyno test this weekend little guy keeping us busy, whew
Yeah new babies are a ton of work.
Sloppy Mechanics enjoy it now (teenagers suck)
empty nesting is so much better. Been there with kids, youngest is 30 now, nice to wave goodbye after a visit
just a fyi, that intake was also used on the envoy denali and saab 9-7x. a new delco unit can be had for ~$140usd
Its on the isuzu npr cab overs too up to 2016.
There is a doorman 2 piece intake out as well
Good update and Congrats on the newest addition to your family !😇
Derrick is a great friend! Good update, I'm looking forward to the dyno numbers.
Everyone needs a good Derrick.
Wankers
Thanks lol

Yea, got to watch those Ebay intakes, glad it worked for you

Never took them to anyone.. put them on straight edge, slipped some feelers in, marked the surface with making compound, so when I started taking material off, I would know when to stop, make sure i'm not doing it uneven. I'm going to do a video about it on YT soon.
I would like to see you test the zr1 map. I have had a ton of trouble with getting mine to read correctly.
plenty of places give out the scale and settings for many different platforms. its a stock sensor, definitely should not be giving you trouble
Soundman. Subscribed a couple month ago. Raffa's mom gets a hammering!
You could always stake the back side of the screws in the throttle body. Like the butterflies in a holly carb.
great suggestion
I have the same throttle body and intake on my setup and a stock intake and throttle body in my garage. So this will determine if I sell my tbss intake and go stock gen 3 truck and save money. Thanks Matt as always!
Evan's Garage tbss is far more superior.
Crossthread is the best form of loctite!
+MrMasterDin agreed
Big 50K subs keep chugging on bro
thanks, it has really grown this year
Does anyone have the part number for the intake please and thank you.
I have the same intake and fuel rails on my 2001 Silverado. I used a C5 fuel filter and fuel transfer hose to connect it to the factory lines. Works great.
IfItsFast ItsCool fuel transfer hose? I’m looking to do same swap. It’s the vette filter/regulator combo right? What else do you need
I've been through this before in NA form with a with a 226/231 cam, interested in seeing your results as the dyno day for my tbss intake and 92 mm throttle body was 15-20°F hotter than with the gen 3 truck intake and 78mm tb. thanks! i have seen many positive results for NA setups with this intake swap
Larry Bagley did you have any problems with your truck starting?
i have one of these intakes and the same china tb. the bolts on the tb blade are backwards from the one you have. philips head is on the inside of the motor. and when i screwed the tps on to the tb is smashes the passenger side of the tb blade into the housing and its starting to shave metal off of the tb bore and obviously the blade wont hardly move. im curious to see your experience with this tb. i contacted them and they seemed ok with giving me a refund. not sure if i just got a defective tb or its junk. i know other people that have used this tb with no issue, after using locktite on the blade bolts. keep up the good work. congrats on the baby!!!
Will this intake mount on the LQ9 & LQ4 with the stock water pump and stock alternator bracket?
I went yessssss as you pulled out rafas moms favorite toy
+hardbodyruckin hahahahaha
I think it would be cool to see the intake/TB on both sets of heads.
yeah maybe one day i will get around to all the combo's, but it starts to quickly fan out over too many things, so i chose a path of upgrade to test
First time seeing your channel..have you heard or seen the Radical Ported intakes for the 5.3?
Can the gen 4 throttle body be wired in place of gen 3 throttle body? What needs to be changed?
I have used everybody’s data for the offset for the zr1 map. The only way I got it to work was with some bullshit number for the offset, otherwise the ecm scanner would read 300kpa while cranking and it would not start. I had to re tune my whole ve table. With the r1 sensor mount why hasn't a company made a generic spacer between the TV and intake or would that cause more problems than it fixed.
Were can I find a electric throttle like the one that came with the intake manifold
I always get tempted to give blue locktite a lick. Damn it smells good
+vurtle lmao
Any chance you can make a video going in depth on how u modify or fab the gen 3 fuel rail to fit the tbss rail. Have a gen 3 5.3 and have been wanting to do this mod for a while now. Thanks
You can also take a center punch and peen the center of the thread end of the screw. They will never come out after that.
+Do R/C! Excellent tip
I think that’s the way chevy does it on the older tbi stuff.
I wouldn’t want to bend the throttle shaft though, maybe put something behind it. I bet a tack weld would work just as well too.
Eric Fixalot yes you definitely want to use a backer on the head side.
Any link on the spacers used to adapt gen 3 fuel rails to the TBSS/ NNBS intake, please?
I’m thinking of installing one on my truck and getting rid of the gen 3 truck intake. Will I need a tune after installing it with a 90mm throttle body?
Could you try dynoing just the tbss mani and t-body before the head swap. Easy enough to do. I’m curious on what those gains would be.
Lsx Z32 the intake will gain a very little. It pairs best with a good head like the 243/799 heads. If you have a good flowing intake and shitty heads it's counterproductive.
how many car garage is the new house? Also, when are you gonna test the tornado fuel saver?
How does the throttle cable bracket get mounted up on the TBSS manifold?
good question! ill have to do something, haven't looked into it yet, i can take a stocker, and just weld something together that bolts on or similar

sorry I get long winded and excited when swaps are brought up.
The bolts are in a third package
lmao
You gotta fabricobble the Chinesium
My brother just got a 06 Buick Ranier, it has a 4-bolt TB on it. So is it the same intake? Looks identical.
Do you think if i pun in the nnbs intake and the nnbs injectors will it start?
Is the trailblazer intake a little shorter than the truck intake?
Where you get the fuel rails for the tbss? Thanks
Nice vid ,,Which intake sits higher ?
Instead of retro fitting the old rails on the new intake just but a corvette filter and mount it to the intake.
the corvette filter sucks in any higher hp application, trust me
Sloppy Mechanics didn't know that. I know plenty of people including me here in the near future that's running it but it's all NA. 🤙
33737 fuel filter at O'Reilly auto parts. dual in single out with internal pressure regulator
they do not work great on higher hp applications
big rock candy mountain overnight parts are the best parts
I'm about to swap a NNBS intake onto my gen3 LQ4 I've got it pretty much figured out just wondering if you know of any injector adapters to keep my stock harness and use the NNBS stock injectors. Thanks in advance
What happened with the fuel rails? Did I miss it in one of the later videos? Did the fuel rail get switched to a return style?
i have my stock truck intake, and this intake, i have not done anything with the swap yet, 2 week old baby taking some attention lol
Thanks you for your videos and the teaching of guys like me. I scanned the head videos, didn't know if the videos were scanned over too quickly. Enjoy the time with the baby. Will you be doing a video on the intake fuel rail conversion?
going to try and video nearly everything i have to do
The reason I was asking is because I switch to a l96 top end on my lq4 and had to use a fuel filter off a corvette to get the returnless fuel rail to work. Would love to go back to the return style rail.
can you post a link to where i can order a new tbss intake?
Can you add a return line to that rail? I welded a AN fitting onto mine, was on a LS6 intake.
i plan on trying to retro fit my older return rails to this intake, i heard it bolts on with minor modifications
Ya if its easy, then great!
Can you do this to a stock 5.3, If so would your videos serve as a guide?
SS throttle bodies are going to go up in price now, buy them while you can haha
and intakes
Why does the china throttle body have holes?
+Jeremy Smith to let in air
So he can stick his dick in it ....duhhhhh
One is for fresh air that passes by the IAC, the other is fresh air into the crankcase.
Do a video of LS3 orL92 engine with a turbo kit ...
we have done a ly6
Did you ever figure out how to keep the return style fuel rails?
i bought a regulator and i am just planning on using that so i can easily convert back if i want to
Sloppy Mechanics does it pinch the lines in any way with the regulator?
Why don't you just use the corvette regulator instead of modifying obs fuel rails, just an idea. Thanks for all the great videos.
Let us know if there are any tricks to get that throttle to idle right. I have the same set up but NA and have spent hours messing with it. I will get the iac counts perfect and an hour later it runs like shit.
+John O'Brien I’ll let you know, your tps % change at all? Adjustment screw seems like it might back off a little o it’s own, again I’ll let you know
John O'Brien the iac port is smaller on the 92 mm tb compared to factory when you compare the inlet and outlet of the iac port. So the ecu is calibrated to the stock iac valve and port, therefor a smaller iac port will not give the same results per opening of the iac valve as intended. very interesting, great observation, now that you said it i do remember seeing the inlet is smaller, probably to make the throttle larger inside,
Sloppy Mechanics Thanks Matt. It gets a little tricky modifying the inlet port because, depending on how far open the base throttle blade position is, it can make the inlet port peek over into the intake manifold side of the throttle blade. wait since when are you allowed under the mitsubishi hood?
+Matt Smith never
Matt Smith battery tender looks like
"All these vacuum ports are nice too" I think you mean all these ports to supply 20 pounds of boost to the brake booster
yeah, like i said, vac ports
Use a corvette fuel filter and you won’t need a return line. The vette filter has the pressure regulator and the return line fitting on it.
corvette regulator is not great for high hp situation at all, failed us many times, i already have a return system, and return rails, i hear its minor modifications to fit them to this intake, presto chango
Sloppy Mechanics yea i have a c5 and i never ran into anybody having that issue.
Assuming your putting this on a 5.3? Does the 5.3 throttle body bolt up to the tbss intake even thought its a smaller mm?
No it does not the og gm one is 3 bolt
Look at me now, sloppy 2.0. Don't let the magic out.
Whats the status on that Evo? is that just your collector item?
its my wife's, 35r, cammed, shep trans, etc
