Rhombulus in Season 3: First to confess the swap of the Mewni lineage and felt bad about keeping it a secret. Still heart of gold and mourns the loss of his friend.
Rhombulus in Season 4: Completely different character, absolute unnecessary jerk to everyone and willing to sacrifice people for the sake of racism.
Season 4 was a load of trash.

You know I like Romulus. But I really don't like in season 4 how they portrayed him as a prejudice jerk. Especially towards eclipsa and meteora. And was even willing to go to genocide just because they didn't want to change their ways.
I hated it too. Rhombulus is my favorite member of the magical high commission and has been since his debut.
I think it could have worked. I mean, he's been known to jump to conclusions and just assume someone is bad based on minor things. It wouldn't be too far out of left-field to have him hate monsters, only to realize that they aren't any different from humans or even the rest of the MHC. But, well, you know.
In 'song day' he literally says "Yeah! Thats my girl!" to support Star. He was a supporting friend, How did they mess up his character THIS much in season 4???
@@SaiyanGamer95 problem was, the other MHC pretty much agreed with him on a lot of it in season 3 and 4.
So if you originally identify him as the “impulsive” one, but have everyone who’s supposed to be LESS impulsive acting like and agreeing with him in terms of Eclipsa and Globgor, then how is he any more impulsive then the others?
If anything, they could have just made them not pay attention to who he crystallizes, just on the mentality that they don’t want to have to do the paperwork involved in cleaning up his messes, unless it’s a particularly LARGE mess, like crystallizing Star, or someone.
Just have it as “oh, Rhombulus crystallizes EVERYONE… who did he get this time, and why should we care?”
Y'know what they could've done if they wanted Rhombulus to de-crystalize Globgor? Have him doubt his judgment over crystalizing the dude, maybe as a result of Star or Eclipsa giving him the idea that Globgor wasn't that bad of a guy. He could've broke Globgor out in an impulsive decision during Cornonation, tried to explain that he thinks he isn't evil, but Globgor rampages and leaves out of fear, causing the problem of the episode.
It would've still kept the climax of the episode the same, and could've been true to his character as a righteous guy that doesn't think things through, without making him a dumb and one note dipstick.
That……would actually work really well and be consistent with his previously established character!
He is definitely the one who does things before thinking them through, and is also the one who will question his decisions later and have internal battles over that kind of stuff. Maybe have him be the LEAST judgemental of monsters, and also still feel really bad about separating up Eclipsa’s family. He then has some smallish conversations with Star/Eclipsa, and it slowly builds up in the background until Cornation.

I originally saw Romulus as being the assisted living person in such a relationship. I mean, we SAW him helping Lekmid, and also he had that line about "Whose going to take care of you?" I thought that was more obvious then them being lovers...
Actually, now that I think about it, one of the series problems was a very unclear definition of what "Evil" meant.
I thought this too, like someone taking care of their grandmother or disabled parent!

Honestly, I just blame the writers and their focus on more shipping wars/comedies that even kids don't like for what happened. And to be honest, I feel a bit bad for Rhombulus after all that he went through. I hope when you do the Heinous/Meteora video, you would include some tidbits of Rasticore (considering at the time) since there wasn't much to go off on him for at least 10 minutes worth. Hopefully, there won't be Heinous/Meteora x Rasticore support in that video when the time comes.

Rhombulus is a class A example of character assassination. It's like the show got completely different writers behind him near the end, and they had no idea how to write him.
My problem with Rombulus is that they went through the trouble to make him sympathetic and develop him and then just said nah forget all that. I would be okay with him being sympathetic I would be okay with him being a douche and I would be okay if he was both, I'm not okay with how inconsistent he's portrayed. Honestly that's the biggest problem I have with star versus the forces of evil. I can live with the controversial shipping, I can live with the bad finale, but I can't stand how they created intriguing characters and then just completely failed in every way of developing and utilizing them. Moon, Rombulus even Star herself. In the end they were just so good at introducing conceptually amazing characters but they just didn't know how to develop them

About the "live in bfs" thing.
Considering the crew clearly didn't have a set plan for the story and clearly didn't communicate well based on just how many contradictions there are throughout the series....I get the impression what happened here either was originally the commission was not related at all and they changed that later (because the show never acknowledged them as siblings till far later in the series).
Or no one told the crew they were supposed to be related, like, at all.
If the show wasn't clearly being written as they went and changing things on a whim I'd be more....yeah, but this definitely feels like a case of not planning things out/ bad communicate.
Either way its frustrating on the part of the crew cause so much aged so badly because of this kinda mishandling which makes rewatching the series a mess.
The joke about his crush on moon tho.....why no one thought that was creepy when they wrote it is even less excusable. But this is also the same show with adult marco so yeah.....just poorly handed.

In all fairness, considering what we know from behind the scenes....its very likely the sibling thing could've been something they came up after s2, or well....daron never enclosed to the crew they were meant to be related.
The crew isn't exactly known for consistency nor for having a well set plan, so at this point its likely this is another result of them writing as they go.

I don’t understand why the Magic High Commission became such jerks after the trial. They were obviously ashamed of what they did to Eclipsa’s kid and they knew it was bad, and they should’ve learned from it and warm up to Eclipsa and come to terms that they misjudged her, like moon. I just wish they didn’t become insufferable and wasted all their potential

I think it would have been interesting to explore why Rhombulus disliked Globgor and give them both more depth in that way (though, honestly, Rhombulus has some interesting potential ties to a lot of characters that would be neat to actually create and flesh out).
As you said, Rhombulus is the most prominent fighter in the MHC and has probably seen the worst of the war. He's also the youngest of the MHC, as from what I heard, he was create around the time Skywynne became queen. This indicates that he was around 100 or so years old by the time Solaria began her campain, maybe even younger. So, if we consider the fact that the rest of his family are relatively ancient compared to him, that means he was basically a kid (even if he was physically an adult). Plus, he is meant to represent childhood, so he might actually have a mind similar to that of a child, which would explain a lot about him.
So if we put these different things together, we can assume that Rhombulus basically grew up during a war and was on the front lines. He might actually have a certain amount of trauma from that. And so it'd be interesting to look at the idea of redemption and forgiveness, because in a way, Globgor and Rhombulus have hurt each other. Globgor's actions may have killed a lot of Rhombulus' comrades, and probably caused long term trauma. Rhombulus was directly affected by Globgor's violent actions, and it would be hard to forget that. But Rhombulus also separated Globgor from his family, imprisoned him and his wife, and erased Meteora from history. That's pretty bad too. So it would have been cool to see.
Honestly, I have so many ideas on all the ways the writers could have utilized Rhombulus, especially to enhance the themes of the show and even help develop other characters. Heck, because of this video (and some interesting stuff in the comments section), I started working on a full Rhombulus rewrite (that also adds stuff to other characters and I might play around with Mina a bit because as you said, she could have been great if built up correctly)! It is both my pride and joy and my biggest disappointment because it reminds me of what could have been.

i initially loved rhombulus since he came off a lovable goof who was misguided by his upbringing. he was to the magic high commission as star was to the queens. I wish they would've made him like a big brother character to star and it would've allowed us to explore more mewni characters.
To me rombulas works in much the same as equlisa "what if star had reponseablities" but where equlisa was foiling star as a royal rombulas foiled star in that he's a fairly dumb character with a lot of power and no restraint I.e. season 1 star

His best episode really was his debut, where he actually came across relatable, a bit dumb and impulsive, but well-intentioned. God did that not last...What's the term again, flanderization? yeah this is a pretty good example of that

(TL;DR incoming) As a fellow Ponyhead apologist (lol), Rhombulus' character path was one of my biggest disappointments. I never connected with Hekapoo the way others did, but I really liked /him./ He was like Star's dumb, immature but well-intended uncle/guardian in the same way he was for her mother. I really liked how sweet he was to her at Lekmet's funeral, how much of a bro he could be, and his mannerisms were hilarious. The Eclipsa arc fell apart hard for me, but it could've worked if he'd had more time to flesh out his feelings.
14:40 - Kitty I cannot thank you enough for calling attention to how fucking gross that joke is. I feel so vindicated because no one else has talked about how fucked up it is (that I've seen anyway). I want to slap whoever thought that was a good joke, considering the show already has a history with the questionable relationship between "Adult Marco" and Hekapoo. I was FURIOUS when they did this! He's a father figure to Moon and her ancestors, not to mention her own daughter! Fucking gag me. UGH.
I 100% buy that he never liked having to lie about Meteora and Festivia, he's a big uncle at heart and doesn't like bringing kids into the crossfire (when he's in the right mindset, he had years for the guilt to eat away at him in this case). Eclipsa more or less assaulting him with her magic (18:58) *after* he was the first to admit what happened to her daughter really pissed me off. I didn't expect her to forgive him, but she should've known there was no way he'd release Globgor. And I felt him telling the truth was a step toward cementing that he'd changed from the crystal-trigger happy jerk he had a tendency to be! But that's just swept under the rug, and he falls into Moon's idiotic plan that resulted in Cornonation. What pisses me off the most is, he HAD development that ends up being forgotten, just to bring out the worst in his character all over again. And no one gives a shit when he dies because they turned him into a genocidal racist, even if Mina's plan resulted in Star's whole family being put in danger. He could have attempted to crystallize Mina but he was too busy partying just because Eclipsa was losing. It was awful.
I'm not really on board with the idea of him being a final antagonist, but that's because I feel at the root of his character, he's immature and bratty but trying to do the right thing. He's not dumb, just impulsive and reactive. Is he capable of being used? Oh yes. But it all circles back to the writers forgetting or just refusing to let him develop.
As much as I like Eclipsa, she fucked up a fair share of times. She's a good character but she's always been a bad queen who pursues her own interests instead of building bridges. It's why she ran away with Globgor in the first place. I understand why Rhom hates Eclipsa. I don't understand why he hates all monsters. If it's because of what Globgor was doing, we should've gotten more insight on that. But again, that'd be asking for explanations the writing team wasn't willing to invest their time in.
Rhombulus in season 2 and 3 was great for me and in his debut episode one of my favourites and in season 4 his character was like what happened to your morality wth
Two things:
1. I miss Lekmet (however you spell it). He could have used some development.
2. If they just put more effort into their breadcrumbs of future plot points and stories, this show could have had a lot of potential.
I totally agree with the first! He could've be a great character, but writers just killed him to continue the ship wars. This precious demon boi actually had a wonderful design and a lot of potential....

More and more it just upsets me at how butchered almost every character is in SVTFOE. Rhombulus was a beloved character of mine, I still love his dim witted yet big and strong personality.
I remember I had a headcanon of rewriting his story with his instincts was maybe because he was taught by the Magic Commission to not doubt them and have him not think for himself. Then after the trial, he’d be conflicted about everything he was supposed to be according to the Magic Commission and would become a better person/having better insight with others with Star’s help.
It was like when I was 14 but I still see that as a better story path at least than how they made him out in the show.
Kinda sucked that The Butterfly family basically destroyed all magic, which included magical based beings. Soooooo yea Rhombulus is now dead along with his siblings and every creature that had magic running though their veins.

They really should have explained the whole "globgor ate Shastacan" thing.
If Shastacan said that they "got rid of the baby" and Globgor assumed she was dead that would have explained everything. Some people would still argue eating him was too much but I would count any death as justified if Shastacan looks like a baby killer.
Star Vs. really is like the series version of the "They had us in the first half" meme, because a lot of people got hooked in during the first two seasons and those two are generally viewed pretty positively....and then Season 3 and 4 came out and while I've seen some people praise certain episodes, especially from Season 3, I haven't seen anyone who actually liked both (or even really either) season as a whole.
Your story with Romulus being the main bad guy instead of Queen Moon is really good. 9.5 out 10. 😆 Also I love heckapoo but they did assassinate her character. 😓

Somethibg i wholeheatly believe is that they didn't need to get rid of magic, Mina and the solarian warrior didn't have soul sucking power like Toffee and Meteora, so Rombulus could easyly crystalizing them.
I actually really liked the concept of them getting rid of magic, even if it wasn't executed great. It wasn't just about stopping Mina; Star recognized that there were serious problems with magic and the kingdom of Mewni.
Honestly, it could have been so easy to give Rhombulus deeper nuances and to set up a stronger base for exploring the heavy topics the show had attempted - to varying degrees of 'success' depending on your mileage - with a slight change to Eclipsa's trial. Rather than confirming one way or another about Eclipsa being good or evil right there, or having the MHC put in no effort whatsoever on their side so that Moon and Star get an easy win, there could have been decent arguments on both sides that make it more difficult to judge Eclipsa.
Namely, morally complicated enough that when it would have come to revealing what happened to Meteora, they could have made the guilt Rhombulus expressed a recent development that occurred over the course of the trial as the defense brought forth compelling arguments of Eclipsa possibly being good. It could have been that prior to the trial, he had seen no problem with what they did to Meteora due to following his gut, but Star making him reevaluate the accuracy of his gut could have led to him taking an impulsive stand *against* crystalizing Eclipsa and against the rest of the MHC from finally recognizing that what they had done was *also* messed up.
After all, it's hard to imprison someone if the guard doesn't want to and wants to figure out what *IS* actually good and evil.
And then from there, there's a whole variety of ways that could have fleshed him out as a well-intentioned guy who's just beginning to learn how to stop and think about what he's doing. Heck, the writers could have dove even deeper into the complicated allegories and themes they had attempted to tackle through Rhombulus questioning the MHC as a whole, perhaps impulsively trying to unfreeze a whole bunch of the people he had crystallized over the millennia due to not being sure anymore or bringing to light other morally grey stuff they had done to take care of legitimate threats.
That would have built off pretty well from him being a meathead and from his introductory episode already sowing the seeds of doubt within him, and it would have been a pretty good opportunity to show off both the MHC and Eclipsa's deeper morals in their response to him making a snap decision out of no longer trusting his own judgement anymore.
5:56 I'm gonna be honest, I do not by that statement one bit. Ignoring the obvious, with the fact they are both treated as family/glossirick's children, their relationship seems way more like either a grandfather/father & child dynamic or that of a nurse for an elderly man, rhombulus seems to more be there to help lekmet out & do tasks i.e. a nurse (his demeanor seems like that of an elderly man/the magic high council are meants to somewhat reflect stages of life, with him being old age) and lekmet is meant to watch over rhombulus so he doesn't do anything to crazy.
sidenote I hate how season for just made him a monster hater, bad guy. first off, he is the member of the magic high commision who looks the most monsterous/like a monster so what's the difference between him and a monster. second his whole standalone episode, was about him learning to stop trusting his gut 100% and that just because he thinks they are evil doesn't mean they actually are, wouldn't that lead him to being one of the people against monster hate aka thinking someone is evil just by base appearances/assumptions. (also rhombulus was written as the commitee member closest to star and they just decided to pull a 180 on it)
Let's be honest, the writers had no idea what they were doing. They were writing by the seats of their pants and just injecting their own weird headcanons into press releases. It's why the shipping shit took up so much of the show's time instead of the actual story.
Rhombulus would’ve been a much better antagonist for Season 4. I went into more detail on how on a previous comment (I believe I’m the Mina video) which I’ll add an exert of below but to add to it a bit it would also give him more connection to the Butterflies. While it’s unclear how long Ludo has been chasing the wand for before the series began we know it began sometime when Moon had the Wand primarily. Toffee has a connection with Moon being what prolonged the Monster and Mewmin war. Meteora is Eclipsa’s daughter, Eclipsa has history with Moon and Star even if not technically related. Mina is…what exactly? Sure it’s implied that she’s connected via Solaria but we barely get to see how in the show (not sure about the book as there’s no way I’m buying it). I’m still convinced she was meant to be a one off character.

Perhaps as Moon continues to manipulate him he begins to actually believe what she says and brings it to heart ultimately betraying her and learning a crystal spell that can’t even be broken by the Crystal Pulverizing Spell dead bent on re-crystalizing Eclipse any Globgor. He was my favorite character and I wanted to see him get development the same way Hekapoo does but they did him dirty and it hurts!

The butterfly family (first and second dynasty, before and after Eclipsa) were married to monsters too, it is confirmed history
Especially with their Butterfly monster form, why don't they count as monster?
Not to mention the Racism is completely one-sided, we actually never see the other side of it, like after Eclipsa becomes queen she kicks mewmans out of their homes, we never see monsters taking almost sadistic pleasure in driving the mewmans out, or a radical group of monsters that seek to commit Genocide against all mewmans, how cool would that be? To see the racist Mewmans led by Mina, and the racist monsters, led by a similar leader, fight against each other and then star and her friends defeating them with the help of both mewmans AND monsters, it would help with the message of unity.

@@justinbowers2749 Honestly if they did do something with that concept to show Star that simply giving back the monsters their old homes or the homes of their ancestors still doesn't solve the issue since people still did live in those homes no matter how they got it and simply kicking them out just continues the cycle of hate and inequality which Mina took advantage of to create her Solarian warriors.
To be fair, Rhombulus was treated like a kid his entire life, making falling in love with someone he helped raise no less creepy but much more understandable.

one thing i want to say is that when i finished star vs the forces of evil i had thought i hadn't been paying attention somewhere because the ending felt weird and i thought it was a little bit of nothing rhombulus turning evil, it turned out i I discovered that the real problem was the series itself...I was kind of sad because Rhombulus was my favorite...

Well fitting you did Hekapoo, but all Is missing left Is Omnitraxus Prime and by the time I'm making this comment where you *FINALLY* talk about Meteora, then no surprise and difference Omnitraxus will fill In her spot! Unlike Eclipsa; who felt more like a mixed bag characters you either admire to loathe as Enji Todoroki himself (or ANY strict but more mature parents who doesn't like goofy and nonsensical characters) but Rhombulus here feels like a tragic patsy who didn't really meant no harm except doing his actual job that his deadbeat creator created him and the others to do his bidding and other dirty work that he could've truly said before he buggered off Into his Pudding Tub. When we literal meet this rejected male Crystal Gem he may not be much except stressed out and has no time for break and you sometime take pity on him or just want to huh the pathetic bloke and the only friends he ever has are his literal arms made of snakes who still acts as his usual "Voice Of Reason" but then enters the Ignorance Woman Child; Eclipsa In her usual desperate pursuit on freeing her husband and even swap minds with Rhombulus and before she could finally won on getting her chance to see him the disrespectful and pitiful spiteful "heroic princess" Star decides to put a stop to all of this and finally told her off and no differences when she also discovered when she found those silkworms repairing the ripped paged of Rhombulus's spell and you already know the rest that I obviously already lost respect for Star before declaring she *HATES ALL MAGIC!!!!* Honestly to god, this "kingdom" clearly have no "hearts" to defend themselves from this critical writing and Instead of giving us more flashbacks or proper shippings that could've been Starco has to be In the way on *EVERYTHING!!!!!!* Don't get me started that Mina wasn't responsible of commissioning him to let Globgar out of his crystallized prison but Instead *FREAKING* Moon was responsible for Globgar's true release and still frustrates me too this day that why her of all people would do such a thing unless he wanted to test Eclipsa's true colours of nature or just wanted to despite her knowing Star was no better trying to clear her name one way or another and If River was still here Instead of goofing around In a bear suit he be more then disappointing In her but truly divorced her by now and toke Star with him. The final middle finger with a thrown Molotov Cocktail they *LITERALLY* killed off all the High Commissions (along with Heapoo) and lays this off for laughs Instead of redeeming them the last minute or did community service to make up for there wrong doing working for Mina because they could've saved up the problem and made-up the fact they knew what was wrong yet they did It anyway. Overall; Rhombulus was really done dirty rater form one of the staff members who didn't like him or just see him as a cruel joke to laugh off In the end of the day feeling good of themselves, and before I go like I like to put out; that In one scene when Luz was still see she think she has Snake for arms which easily references Rhombulus himself which does remind me either she *might* get a new form (mind goes to the Otter With A Darkside) or a fusion of both to take out Belos and The Collector on her own. If Amity or anyone else were lucky to back up Luz say It now or It's bye bye to both worlds!!!!

It's so sad I actually liked the mhc including Romulus (my phone continues to autocorrect that so I'm leaving it) they were flawed and sometimes a bit stupid but Jesus did they just assassinate them and moons characters and that includes hekapoo just completely derailed them because plot needed to happen and despite the thousands of other plots fans thought up that made more sense and fit the show well the writers made moon stupid as heck and side with mina got rid of everyone's redeemable qualities- it's sad this show has so many good ideas but somehow dropped the ball on most of them
this show disappointed me in the long run, but gosh i miss the excitement i had for this world and story back when it was airing. i think ill always have a bit of a soft spot for it

Great video on Rhombulous, for your next video, can you talk about the main protagonist,Star Butterfly herself in "How Star Butterfly Could’ve Been Handled and Written As A Protagonist Better?" since Star's character development and growth over the series was not that good,her flaws and mistakes began to execubate more as the series progressed, and hasn't learned at all throughout the series,from her reckless,irresponsible actions and flaws.
I'm gonna describe Star's character progression by every season of the show: Season 1 Star was reckless and stubborn,but a good friend to everyone and loves to fight monsters. Season 2 had Star potrayed as more reckless and dumber than before,but still shows her Season 1 personality at times. Season 3 has Star acting mature,understandable,helping Eclipsa, and trying to improve the monster-mewman relationship,but still acts reckless occasionally and can act like a brat and a jerk to others,even towards her friends and family at times. Season 4 really cranked up all of Star's negative qualities to 11 to the point she isn't likable and funny anymore and tends to make ever more dumber and selfish decisions than she did in the first three seasons,she even tends to go too far by destroying the magic at the end and creating genocide against magical beings and even takes her anger,recklessness, and magic out on people and everything,such as turning a man into a squirrel-frog,being a hypocrite towards Eclipsa when reprimanding her,destroying a person's house,and acting like a terrible boyfriend to Tom.
I think Star wasn't handled and written as a protagonist very well and the later seasons even made her character even worse due to the shipping/romance drama ruining the series and rushed,bad writing in the later season caused by crew fights,Jeffrey Tambor(Glossaryck)'s arrest after his sexual harassment allegations,and most of the original writers for the show being let go by Disney after Battle of Mewni. At least Anne Boonchuy and Luz Noceda were handled way better as protagonists and gotten better in their own shows than Star ever was and Molly McGee is basically a Thai version of Star,but with more functioning brain cells,having way more reasonable goals and morals, and being more competent and mature than her. I feel like Star's flanderization in the show reminds me a lot of Bloo's flanderization from Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends since his troublesome,foolish,and reckless behavior gotten more chaotic and leveled up by every season,finally leveling off with the disappointing series finale,"Goodbye To Bloo".
I think for your next video,can you describe how Star Butterfly would've been handled as a protagonist better if she learned more about her magic,gotten better from her flaws and mistakes,learned to accept change into a more mature and empathic person a lot more and moved on,began to listen to people,learn about responsibility and caring more to others,listening to people more,including Marco,finally succeeded in standing up to her mother in a right and more reasonable,Reason-You-Suck way(much like how Meg stood up to Lois,Chris, and Peter in Family Guy for all treating her so horribly in the episode,"Seahorse Seashell Party") ,finally grows to admit her flaws and problems to everyone and makes amends to others for all the trouble,destruction,and problems she's caused,got pointed or called out on her flaws and mistakes more(just to show kids how Star's reckless and irresponsible behavior,foolishness,and selfishness can lead to facing the consequences and the punishment you get from it), and telling Moon she's not a little girl anymore and now a strong,independent woman. I wish Star would gotten better as the series went on(along with Marco,Moon,Hekapoo,and Rhombulous) if the writing in the later seasons wasn't badly written and never full of ship wars and romance drama?

The more I look at Rhombulus's character in the earlier seasons, the more i believe rhombulus was going to be a good guy but the writers gave his redemption arc to Hekapoo.
Romulus is as enjoyable as the crystal guardian from hollow knight, as in you are in for a world of pain and frustration

Most of the show goes nowhere because of the shipping. TomStar had healthy development at least, instead of the Blood Moon bullshit that literally trapped Star and Marco and forced them to kiss. Gross.

2) i severely doubt that sonamy should be canon anyways. It has the same problem as Wendy and dipper in which amy is 12 and Sonic is 15-16 Which while it isn’t many years for adults, the maturity difference in children in age gaps like that can be huge.
