    Looks like either a catch basin to retain water after the river goes down or hydroelectric project of some sort. Working as intended, just before it was complete. They would have taken out that berm themselves when it was complete but the river beat them to it.

      @@elisampley7598 the Mississippi river is only 11 miles wide at the widest point. The Amazon River is atleast 30 miles wide at its widest. And there are many more rivers that are dozens of miles wide. So while the Mississippi is the best the US has it is but a baby compared to the big boy rivers of the world.

    It's not destruction, for construction purpose temporary coffer dam was built with soil and after the completion on construction coffer dam is automatically removed by heavy flooding water

      Coffer Dam? don't think so, a Coffer dam is built completely differently, at an angle opposite across the position of the body of water.......this is just mud heaped up for a very very temporary "dam"

    It's dam inauguration. That wall of soil stopped the river until the dam was completed. Then it was exploded and dropped. Simple. Its not a disaster. Just routine process

      It was NOT an inauguration but a result of a natural calamity in Kedarnath where a wall of a glacier lake in the upper regions got destroyed due to a cloud burst, releasing all the water downstream.

    That looks more like a temporary dam that was used while that bridge looking structure was built. I'll take a guess and say it diverts the flow of water to keep it from eroding the bank on the other side and divert the flow of water for a dam, flood relief, or generators maybe. Am I close? Anyone who knows?

    Those people likely knew that already. They act like they expected that, like it was designed to fail when the water got high enough. I'm guessing again that the river has a season every year when it rises, and they were to build the dam to last only that long.

      It was not quite normal
      It occured due to heavy flood in 2013 .. I think about 5-7k lost their lives and many missing bcoz of excess rain and cloud burst😔

    Anyone here after mullaperiyar issue..?? Kerala is on the verge of a huge disaster. About 40 lakhs of people are about to lose lives and properties.. we need support from other states of India and other countries too. The dam is too old and it urgently needs decommissioning.. needless to say what will be the impact when its ignored as the dam holds 15 TMC water.. the potential energy it holds is unimaginable..it's going to destruct Idukki dam too which again holds 7 times the amount of water than the former one.. it's high time that we should protest.. please do stand with Kerala and support us. #save Kerala #save mullaperiyar..

      Why not? The water level in that pocket will never rise higher than the level of the raging water flow. Gravity. That area of water will just stay as is then recede as the water flow slows down and lessens.

      Earth dams work as long as they are built right and water does not go over the top, once it does it's a 'runaway' and will wash the whole thing away. They are pretty common.
