I remember when I watched Tennessee football we would have the TV on with the volume off listening to John Ward on the radio. Great memories with my father.
Before every single VOLS game was on tv, we had John Ward and Bill Anderson on The Vol Radio Network. I remember listening to it many times on a fall afternoon with my brother and father back in the early 1980s. For all of those folks across Big Orange Country- its football time in Tennessee! I wish we could hear more of Bill Anderson in these clips as well.
“And yes that is Vols radio announcer John Ward taking down the goalpost by himself. I’d like to remind everyone watching that he is in his 80s and nobody in attendance is surprised”
God I miss John Ward play calling. The way he did play be play and the energy he had made you feel you was sitting right there in Neyland Stadium. I would listen to him and turn TV sound off all the time. He is the GOAT of announcers
In the 90’s, in some games I would turn off the live TV broadcasting Tennessee game and went out to my car, turned on the radio just to listen to Mr Ward’s voice announcing the live game and got chilled picturing his description of plays and especially when Tennessee scored: to the 20.. to the 15… give him 6! Man, I missed him and those excited times !
I will never ever forget hunting up at Bandit Creek with my late father in the 80's and listening to this legend every Saturday. We moved to Farragut in '94 and I was blessed to meet the man every week at a local bagel shop. He hated the attention, he was a humble man. Got a signed head shot of him in '99. Gave it to my father for his birthday. Man, the nostalgia runs deep with the best announcer ever.
There won’t ever be another John Ward! I was born in 89, so thankfully got to hear him call a bunch of games over the years. I’d give anything to have him back and just going wild on the radio! Especially the night we knocked off bama last year. But I remember my dad would turn the tv volume to mute and crank John up on the radio.
We didn't have cable or anything when I was a teenager, so sometimes I would just drive around in my beat-up car listening to Mr. Ward call the games on many fall afternoons.
“Who’s got the ball? He’s got the ball. Where is he? IN THE ENDZONE for SIX!!!” What an absolute legend. We were blessed to have him for so many years. RIP JW
Man, does this bring back memories. I never heard all the Ward calls of the '82 Alabama game, as I was lucky enough to be there (and among those tearing down the North goal post as he was counting down the game). John was the best there ever was, and as great a football broadcaster as he was, he was even better in basketball. I'd love to find a collection like this of his hoops calls over the years. Thank you John - you will never be replaced.
God, 25 years since we last heard John Ward call a game and I’m still reacting to his calls like they just happened. We did not realize as Vol fans how good we had it…
Jay Graham,Charlie Garner,James "Little Man"Stewart ,Travis Henry,Travis Stephens,Jamal Lewis ,my goodness our Vols had some serious Running Backs in Ward's era!
His best call was actually basketball. In 1981 (I think) Tenn. was losing in the Vol Classic with 2 seconds left against American Univ. All AU had to do was inbound the ball to the other end and the clock would run out. Inexplicably, their star inbounded to half court. Gary Carter intercepted and tossed a half court jumper simultaneously, and it went in giving the Vols the win. AW Davis (I think it was) got out of breath in the excitement, and Ward had to finish up the broadcast. All the fans had left when it appeared they had lost, and Ward explained he felt sorry for the fans who missed that ending.
21:37 This play as called by Bob Kesling: Martin steps back....throws it down field... and it's going to be....caught by peerless price.... touchdown Tennessee (in the most completely flat voice the entire time).
Ward was really good, but I got tired of his trailing countdowns😳The player scored and in the end zone long b3for3 John caught up🤬Especially his bad call on ND game calling the FG good😳
-we didn't realize how blessed we were.. to have, the best College Football announcer, not just... at the time, but... EVER .
I loved both John Ward & Keith Jackson.. I try and hear their voices when watching a Tennessee game.
No one was ever better
We knew full well
I agree, no announcer EVER will ever be as good, can't even compare!! RIP Mr.Ward!
When I was a kid, if the UT game was televised, my dad would mute the TV and turn up John Ward and Bill Anderson on the radio.
We were spoiled to have somebody like John Ward

How great would it have been to hear him call the 22 bama tenn game.

Absolutely an amazing video, John, you were the best at your craft

Yep Kesling is nothing like this. He is our announcer but says he tries to remain partial
Nothing better than John Ward and Bill Anderson. I'm one of many that probably grew up listening to John and Bill. Still gives me chills.🍊🏈👍
What I wouldn’t give to have someone half as talented as John ward
Never b another as great as Jon Ward
Even opposing teams preferred John Ward's broadcast.

Simply the GOAT
This Gator fan can respect and appreciate a legend.

Having followed Tennessee football since the 60s, I can honestly say that it's not the same without John Ward!
It's great to hear John Ward again !!!!! Wish he was still with us

The 2022 season starts tonight....wish John was with us to call the games!
Me Too Man! He'd have fun calling this Offense
He'd have fun calling that Alabama game!
Man oh man if only

How appropriate that John Ward was given a National Championship at the end of his tenure 🙏
When John Ward did his "5-4-3-2-1" call, I thought he was teasing his fans.
John ward we sure are gonna miss you saying "touch down Tennessee!"
Wish we had someone with heart and passion now
Ward turned me from being inspired into having a passion for Tennessee football and basketball since 81-82
Jay Graham,Charlie Garner,James "Little Man"Stewart ,Travis Henry,Travis Stephens,Jamal Lewis ,my goodness our Vols had some serious Running Backs in Ward's era!
Goosebumps when he got to the twenty
Thank you John !
Thank you for uploading this!
You're welcome! The. Best.
Still gives me chills.
When you were a kid and Tennessee was on the TV you didn’t have the tv volume on you had Mr. Ward on the radio.
Miss johnward class he signed a basketball an football for my son none better
Am I gonna go to bed instead of watching this video?
No, sireee. No, sireee.
Turn down the TV and turn up the radio!
Dude I was like 8 or 9 before I found out that the tv had its own announcers

R.I.P. the GREATEST playcaller to EVER call a football game!!! #ItsfootballtimeinTennessee
Legends never die.
John Ward was The BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No offense BOB but there is NO one better than John Ward.
You may right…John Ward made you excited to hear VOLS games!
TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEEEEE!!!!
21:37
This play as called by Bob Kesling: Martin steps back....throws it down field... and it's going to be....caught by peerless price.... touchdown Tennessee (in the most completely flat voice the entire time).
Ward in later years was lost, and I am the biggest fan
he fights demons in his off time
He was the 🐐
"WILLIE GAULT"
12:55 not often John Ward calls a TD against the vols
Let’s go big orange beat bama!!
Touchdown Tennessee on play number one Tennessee beat Alabama in 1995 after a long streak to Bama
Magical night
@@setheaves9323 magical era, if not for being brought out of RS, that would have been Manning's year
hey seth are you going to put up a video of bob kesling's best calls since it's his 25th season calling tennessee football and men's basketball?
Man I wish we could have another Reggie Cobb and/or Chuck Webb even Jamal Lewis big and explosive
If the 92, I think, Fla game where he says "it's a downpour" isn't #1, then this list is very incorrect.
It's not a ranking. It's mostly chronological order.
@@setheaves9323 ok gotcha. Should do it as a ranking. Just your own personal opinions. Would be a fun video
How best to retire. 98 national championship
Nothing but Alabama.
Outside of Tennessee everyone knew how bad he was.
I listened to John Ward when I was in college at ETSU in the 70's. He was excellent but Larry Munson was the absolutely the best! Go Dawgs!
Both very good in their own unique way
Ward was really good, but I got tired of his trailing countdowns😳The player scored and in the end zone long b3for3 John caught up🤬Especially his bad call on ND game calling the FG good😳
Chills. GBO
