My older brother (68) passed away five months ago. He had morphine every 6 hours to calm his pain (cancer). I remember his last shot at 10pm, closed his eyes with a sweet smile and in the morning I found him dead.
I'm with you....! My ten years older brother, I loved him so much, died because of Aids. He was addicted to heroin over 20 years. He was so intelligent and special in art and music. It has been over 5 years now , when I've kicked a 40 year old Heroin-addiction !! Almost 60 and still alive and kicking !! (Allways 'd thought that it would be IMPOSSIBLE , but I'm still around !!)
So, I came here to listen to this wonderful version of one of my fav RS songs. Instead, I found myself spending the better part of close to two hours reading the comments. In that time, and in all the words i read, and with the atmosphere and mood of the song, it's so eerie and sad that we live in a world that lacks compassion for our sisters and brothers who struggle daily with pain, addiction, and all the things that come with that package, whether it be homelessness, loneliness, the senseless loss of a husband or child or being excommunicated by friends and family and a healthcare system that regards little for the patient, while money is the real core of it's function. Some comments had me wandering back to the late 60's and early 70's when my close friends were being drafted into a war they didn't understand, or my high school friends that never made it back home. (I spent a moment to reflect on them in particular, so I'm grateful for the reminder). And, of course, those who served and gave so much of themselves, yet how are we serving them in return today? Respect for the kind and caring replies from people from all corners of the world who showed understanding and sent positive thoughts and kind words to those who really needed to hear them, or said "brother, you're not alone" and even a stranger who said "look me up, maybe I can help you". For sure, there is a kind of magic in a song that not only transports us back to another time....music truly is a universal language that can bring out the very best in us if we listen not only with ears, but with our hearts.
Thanks for these wise words... A german song writer named Constantin Wecker said once in a concert "Let us love the addicts otherwise we gonna kill them..." He self struggeld hard on a cocaine addiction but made it .. Myself Im just in a cold withdrawal of Oxycodon..and maybe some understand..Addiction is a sickness a no way out of it is easy...Wishing strenght to anyone out there who suffers in any way.. and excuse my bad english and maybe strange translation. Warm regards from the black forest Germany
My mom was a Registered Nurse & worked alongside many young Interns (first year being doctor) one of which was Andrei Barnard - son of Heart Transplant Surgeon Christian Barnard... Andrei became a Morphine addict due to injuries caused by a car accident... He was not allowed access to the Hospital's Medicine cabinet- my mom was so fond of him & always helped where she cld - he eventually died from an overdose... Will never forget how she cried at his death - also fotos of his father crying heart breakingly at the funeral... Drugs are dangerous... Elixir for worlds probs for a while but never the solution...

I loved this song, back in the day when I was "getting a nod on". I took some bad roads, but I survived, some how. I am 75 years old now, and methadone is the only way I can make it from one day to the next. Chasing Miss Morphia cost me a lot, but I still think about the perfection of the feeling every day. Don't mess around young ones. Sooner or later, your dues must be paid..in full.
StellarBlue1 so true mate and so sorry for you then again I am still trying to get clean after almost 25 years only thing that helps to get me through the day is my dose of metodone and some people talk about making Herion legal what fools the are for wanting that
StellarBlue1 ive not took heroin or valium or methadone for over 4 years now. Its a daily struggle. Long for them hazy moments. But fucked my life up. Dont ever take heroin or all. You miss out on life.
BOY THIS BRINGS BACK SOME PAINFUL MEMORIES MANY A YEAR SPENT NODDING AWAY AND THIS SONG WAS LIKE MY ANTHEM.THANI GOD TODAY I"VE BEEN CLEAN 32 YEARS AND A FEW ONE DAY AT A TIME
Congrats on your time. I've been clean and sober about the same. It hasn't always been easy but worth it. I'm now battling cirrhosis of the liver with the hep c I got from sharing needles. I'm 66 and am not doing well with my health. Anyway, congrats again and hugs
When i now hear this song it takes me back to the period i was addicted to heroin, cocain and methadon. And i can really feel what i felt then. Several times brought to the hospital. I am clean now. But still can feel it , like its now
We sometimes injected morphine (not heroin) in addition to amphetamine. The 70's. But when my wife was in the hospital for cancer, this song had a completely different meaning that fits closer to the lyrics. (my wife is clean from cancer now)
@@timhitt9541 - Took it as word play, not the answer and mostly a crutch. Besides, remember reading this was a song about smack so if not accurate at least a forgivable cultural misrepresentation.
This is an awesome song, but it has a much much deeper meaning for those of us that have lived it, that's for certain!! I suppose there were times in the beginning where it really gave us a good feeling, but I can listen to this and feel 40+ years of pain in 6 minutes; all the shattered dreams, deaths of close friends and family members, and burnt relationships!! I'm able to make it with Methadone myself for the last twenty years, but even that has been far from a smooth sail because storms and tumultuous waves have still intermittently pounded the ship!! I am blessed to have the greatest understanding daughter!! Shout out to all those that are still struggling...
HAT(Heroin as a Treatment) over MAT(Methadone or Bupe). In England they use H in hospitals and they use H in clinics throughout Switzerland and Europe. Primary care physicians in Canada can now prescribe H. In th US they'd rather fill ur body up with opiates while at the same time perpetuating the destruction of endorphins. Just research it, HAT shows substantially more efficacy than MAT.
And absolutely killer they're playing it live same time record came out. These guys know how to play, straight up. Still love them, but what a great run they had with Beggars, Let it Bleed, Sticky, Exile, and the ultimate live record Ya Ya's. Include Aftermath, Goats Head, Only Rock &Roll, C'mon!
I wonder how many cancer patients feel the way I do about this song. I HATE MORPHINE. I refuse to take it now, I refuse to be hospitalized. I refuse to leave me dog. Instead I listen to the music. Some call it transcendental meditation, some call it God, some call it crazy. All the same to me. Whatever gets ya though the night, is alright, it's alright.
@@dannee3731 Depends on the dose they give you & why & how they are giving it . Lost my mom in 2002 after a 14 year struggle with lung cancer. In the final days they gave it it her as to ease her breathing & make her end of days more comfortable. It was never given to make her high but to simply ease the pain of dying. Much of this song is about a guy that according to Marianne Faithful who wrote the words to this was in a car crash & dying in the hospital while pleading for Morphine to ease his pain even though he & the staff know he won't survive. The words are pretty clear on why he is there & it's not cause he's an addict as they don't bleed to death as the final line says You can sit around and watch the clean white sheets stain red. Also in England nurses are referred to Sisters hence the name of the song. Morphine when used as it was with my & your mom helped them ease their struggle , but when used as Junk it's a terrible addiction that usually ends in death less your very lucky & can with help kick it. Like all narcotics they make you feel like your on top of the world but it's a false feeling as once you come down it's all comes back & you want more. I do speak from some experience as i have tried both Heroin & Morphine in the early 70's . Never again will i be so stupid but that was so long ago & i as a musician got roped into trying it as it was around & real. I did them both several times & it was enough to realize it would be like it it still is ,a dead end. Sorry to hear you lost your mom as i have done the same & we both know as do others that have been through this it's a bad thing with a worse outcome. On your real question it makes everyone feel good but it also is different with different people. If your hurt they give it to relieve these symptoms & they know death is around the corner but all cases are not the same. but those who take it as a get high drug are only trying to find an escape & that they do till it kills them or they get lucky enough to kick it. Fooling around with these drugs can only lead to misery & lost time. Wrote this song way before i lost my mom but for all the time i did lose during my Jr. & High School years playing with drugs. ruclips.net/video/RHj04fFTrZI/видео.html

I turned 50 last year and remember this song being the soundtrack of my youth & addiction. I would've listen to it before I even would master English (give or take) so I barely have been able to understand lyrics hence I would hear what I'd wish to. Heroin/opiates' charm is long gone while the song 'abides' and grows even more haunting and exhilarating with time.
Mick has finally made it big. News of his recovery from his heart ailment is great, though the doctor wood only say that the prognosis is good. Glad the old boy is gonna hang around for a while. Welcome back m'man!
‘Sister Morphine’. 'Sister Morphine' The lyrics were penned by Marianne Faithful as she imagined a car crash victim in hospital crying out for morphine. Despite her later addiction, the singer said she was clean at the time of writing the track. Jagger already had the melody.
OMG I own (I imagine) the exact same print by Ronnie Wood of Keith as you do. Mine is called, if I recall, Blue Smoke Keith?? (something Blue) I got it for my 40th birthday (my cash paid for it, mind you, hehe), and, in my opinion, it's the best work Ronnie has ever done. It's fabulous. I'm a huge Keith fan, so this painting has, actually, become my most favorite, prized possession. I love it.

Once, while hospitalized, I was given morphine to ease the pain. In the next few minutes, I knew exactly how someone can easily get addicted to it! It was scary, knowing that this drug could make someone feel that way!!
Yip. Had accident 30 years ago. Was two years before I could walk again without crutches among other problems but I was on a morphine pump for two months and then suddenly it was gone….. here I am all these years later after going to jail three times and overdose several times have lost all the people that mattered as the only thing that mattered was the next fix…. Even with treatment the addiction never leaves me…. It’s about the only thing I still have…. Life down the drain.. hospitals need to help patients with addiction before they sling us out the door. It’s no joke and as much as those that have never been addicted think it’s not about choosing the drugs…. It’s feeling like there’s no way to live without it…. Hate you opiates…
I too,am here in Chicago hooked on methadone. I'm 58 years old and been taking it for 15 years. Now I have a fiance, and a job waiting for me in Spain. I can't leave because I'm a slave to this methadone clinic I attend. I'm down to 40 mg from 100mg.and boy is it gotten painful now!!! Good luck to everyone on this thread of replys.
Man we have methadone in Europe, I bet the rules are even more easy to live with. I get mine by going once a week to the farmacy and get my medication for one week. I don't need to see a doctor, only when I think it is necessary I can go. I worked all my live as a secretary, went on abroad holidays with my husband and always took my medication with me. Got a kind of medication passport from the pharmacy where I go and so I could take my methadone with me in the airplane, over the borders and into Austria ( I am from The Netherlands) I know in Spain it is the same, rules are not so tight as in the US, one can get a maintenance dose or a tapering dose, you make the choise. I must say, I always got 30 mg and reduced it to 10 now, which was not so difficult for me, but everyone can decide his own rate. So it is a shame you did not get your new job and tried it over here. I hope you do get another change and take it, for I really really think you would be better of here. Anyway, whatever choice you make, have a great life.
Hi there ! My name is John and I live in the Netherlands . I started using when I was only 14 years old and stayed on that stuff until about 10 years ago ! My "works" went into the bin and now I'm almost 63 , but Methadone gave me the opportunity to find a job and pick up my "Social Life" ! Thank God on my knees that Methadone is almost fully integrated ! It saved my life ! Go , and walk your road , bro !! And keep away from the "dragon" !
When you were living in Europe , and yoy are on Methadone , you can get a "Schengen-letter" , so you can pas the authorities without a problem ! (I've been on holydays in Spain several times , WITH Methadone ! Is there nothing in YOUR country like a letter from the institution where yoy get you meds from ?
Hello Bro . Another thing : Over here in Holland it is possible to get Methadone . And when you're in a program , it is also possible to go to , for example , Spain , on holyday or for work and the " Schengen-agreement" made it possible overhere in Europe to get your Methadone also in other European countries , like Spain ! It's even possible to take your Meds across the border when you are in a program ! Maybe something like this is also available for citizens of America , I don't know , but , it's worth trying ! Me , I wonna spend my "last years" in Spain , together with my beloved (clean !) "Ol'Lady" ! Looking forward to this ! But , first we have to deal with "Covid-19" !! Keep on fighting the Dragon , bro ! Succes !!

It has been over 5 years now , when I've kicked a 40 year old Heroin-addiction !! Almost 60 and still alive and kicking !! (Allways 'd thought that it would be IMPOSSIBLE , but I'm still around !!)
Been clean 16years now, after 20 some years of heroin use, wish my brother Ron and a lot of friends could have made it.
Have you guys paid back all the people you stole from?
You must of had an angel on your shoulder to make it through that!
People like you should travel through schools.

Well done
Wow thank you
Well said straight from the heart

Same here !! Almost 60 and I've kicked the addiction !! Hooked for 37 years on a needle !! But still going strong !!
Methadone is NOT the only answer. I used heroin for 25+ years and have been clean now for 17+. Life is good!

We sometimes injected morphine (not heroin) in addition to amphetamine. The 70's. But when my wife was in the hospital for cancer, this song had a completely different meaning that fits closer to the lyrics. (my wife is clean from cancer now)

This is one of the best Rolling Stones live recordings I’ve ever heard. I recorded much of Flashpoint and wish it sounded this good.
Shout out to all those that are still struggling...
i was on morphine for 15yrs, quit, a week of the he b ge bs ,and i have not had any or wanted any for 2yrs now....
I’ll drink to that , my addiction was Oramorph n Vodka , been addicted ain’t an easy road but made more bearable,by the Stones .
Nicely said. Enjoy ur life and ur daughterr
I understand 😎💪

I wonder how many cancer patients feel the way I do about this song. I HATE MORPHINE. I refuse to take it now, I refuse to be hospitalized. I refuse to leave me dog. Instead I listen to the music. Some call it transcendental meditation, some call it God, some call it crazy. All the same to me. Whatever gets ya though the night, is alright, it's alright.
my late husband was on morphine, amongst other things and sometimes he would be "bouncing off the walls"

I would've listen to it before I even would master English (give or take) so I barely have been able to understand lyrics hence I would hear what I'd wish to.
Heroin/opiates' charm is long gone while the song 'abides' and grows even more haunting and exhilarating with time.

‘Sister Morphine’. 'Sister Morphine' The lyrics were penned by Marianne Faithful as she imagined a car crash victim in hospital crying out for morphine. Despite her later addiction, the singer said she was clean at the time of writing the track. Jagger already had the melody.
Only a few lines by Marianne and Mick finished it.

Succes !!

Brian......
huh Anastasia? (don't scream in vain)
Clever pun... Rumor has it that I escaped my fate..
LOVE the guitar work.....only the Stones can pull this off....
Gotta give it to Mick for singing it in the original key, a lotta singers would have dumbed it down at his age ✌️
@Ronnie Wood are you on the stuff again?
The friends and relatives gone...the dreams lost.
Interesting thoughts from ex users and I thank you for sharing them. I was 13 when I kicked back on the bean bag with head phones on and heard this song. And it truly scared me. Never touched a needle and the only thing going up my nose is oxygen and my finger. But I ain't no saint. We all have our 'demon lives'. Great song.
The Rolling Stones - Sister Morphine (RARE LIVE VERSION)
Here I lie in my hospital bed
Tell me, sister morphine, when are you coming round again?
Oh, I don't think I can wait that long
Oh, you see that my pain is so strong
All the other patients say they've never seen a man with such pain,
Tell me, sister morphine, when are you coming round again?
Oh, I don't think I can wait that long,
Oh, you see that I'm not that strong
The scream of the ambulance is soundin' in my ear
Tell me, sister morphine, how long have I been lying here?
What am I doing in this place?
Why does the doctor have no face?
Oh, I can't crawl across the frosty floor
Can't you see, sister morphine, just trying to score
Well, it just goes to show, things are not what they seem
Please, sister morphine, turn my nightmare into dreams
Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast
And that this shot will be the last
Please, cousin cocaine, lay your cool hands on my head
Hey, sister morphine, you'd better make up the lyin' bed
'Cause you know and I know, in the morning I'll be dead,
And you can sit around and watch, the clean white sheets stain red
onehotgossip I was quite profound perfectly well done Amman
onehotgossip s
gets to you, like no other...
