    Lyrics:
    Here I lie in my hospital bed
    Tell me, sister Morphine, when are you coming round again?
    Oh, I don't think I can wait that long
    Oh, you see that I'm not that strong
    The scream of the ambulance is sounding in my ears
    Tell me, sister Morphine, how long have I been lying here?
    What am I doing in this place?
    Why does the doctor have no face?
    Oh, I can't crawl across the floor
    Ah, can't you see, Sister Morphine, I'm trying to score
    Well it just goes to show
    Things are not what they seem
    Please, sister Morphine, turn my nightmares into dreams
    Oh, can't you see I'm fading fast?
    And that this shot will be my last
    Sweet cousin Cocaine, lay your cool cool hand on my head
    Ah, come on, sister Morphine, you better make up my bed
    'Cause you know and I know in the morning I'll be dead
    Yeah, and you can sit around, yeah and you can watch all
    The clean white sheets stained red

    Anyone who has fallen into the arms of Morpheus (Dilaudid, Demerol et al) can relate to the pain in Marianne's voice, "Things are not quite what they seem". Brilliant performance by a talent who has been and is greatly underappreciated. Love you, Sister M.

    She learned something from the Stones when she arranged this, the moderate tempo of the song barely changes even as the intensity of the horns, keyboards and guitars increases. She makes the trip seem inviting and hauntingly scary at the same time, which is the way heroin works.

      I may be wrong- but I think opiates seem to feel like a warm escape from one's own inner psychic pain.Addiction to it is so sad because it locks away the pain giving one the FIRM BELIEF that addiction is the huge problem.In fact- my problems began to take form age 3 or age 8 .Its the dominance of parents & adults over soft & gentle children who begin to mould the child to crush the heart, yes! One's very loving gentle heart is stifled and crushed, so school is a place where I opened my heart like a flower to the sun.I smiled.I felt joy & safety in my beloved comrades: my common ground was felt with the other school kids.Now I am 65 & I have assurance within that my child self is finding refuge in playfulness & self discovery and pride.Ditching guilt is essential for survival.Heroin addiction weaved a waxed cocoon around me.Then outsiders wag their finger saying ' you're bad'.Oh no, its struggling to live without love, without self acceptance which is bad.Dont blame addicts.Know that b4 the addiction began, there was hidden rejection and stern criticism from family.Let go of family and their ways can be transcended by understanding them

    I
    My first time hearing this. I don’t know how I missed most of her music. I or 2 hits (songs) during my childhood. I figured one hit wonder. I was so wrong. I found Broken English by happenstance! I don’t care what propaganda she remembers from rehab. Please don’t leave the room! 1 dose of pain is greater than all the flowers in all the world. What an artist! She has captured agony. Then poured it on the floor! Then had the guts to not clean it up! I hope she made recordings that have been hidden in her basement. That will be released any day now!
    All 12 sky gods have given her a pass to live every minute exactly as she has always wanted. Borrowed time is as good as eternal bliss.

    Absolute beautiful

  • @bevo1776
    @bevo1776 2 года назад +22

    Absolutely riveting! What a haunting presentation, straight from the heart.
    Back in 2005, I broke my neck and my pelvis, and had my urethra ripped from my bladder. The military surgeons at BAMC in San Antonio did an AWESOME job putting me back together.
    While I was in the hospital, I was administered morphine to kill the intense pain I experienced. I am here to tell you, this song is SPOT ON as to what I endured with this insidious drug!
    I PRAY for any individual addicted to this evil and treacherous drug. I truly believe morphine was created by Lucifer himself, in the darkest corner of his hell.
    A couple of quick examples of what happened to me,
    while on this drug:
    My sister had brought me a balloon and placed it at the foot of my hospital bed. After my family left and I lay there in that room alone, that balloon became an evil clown and he began to dance around my bed and mock me. When my family arrived the next day, I asked them to put that son-of-a-bitch in the closet.
    One day, as I was trying to watch TV news, the show suddenly turned into pornography, out of nowhere. It was unreal how this morphine cracked open my skull and pissed down my throat.
    Nighttime was the worst. Hospitals are probably the worst place to try and get some sleep. The nightmares I experience were EVIL
    and SICK. And they were relentless. I finally asked the saw bones to just stop with the morphine treatments and let me just lay there in pain. That was better than the hallucinations and nightmares.
    "Sister Morphine" was always one of my favorite tunes from the Stones and "Sticky Fingers" has always been my favorite album. (mainly because of Mick Taylor) But after 2005, this song REALLY hit home for me!
    I know that morphine plays a key and vital role on the battlefield.
    But God, please bless anyone addicted to this horrible, ruthless drug.

    • @dionlindsay2
      @dionlindsay2 2 года назад +6

      Amen to that. I had 36 hours of morphine injections after a back operation, and I fought long and hard to have it back when they took it away. How anyone gets free if they have their own source beggars belief. In the worst pain I've experienced it brought me joy and warmth and happiness. When later I was embarrassed about how much I fought for it the nurse grinned and said "Every time, that's why it's 36 hours". My love for anyone stuck on it, and my unbounded wonder and admiration for anyone who has freed themselves

    • @DirkjeAbma

      It gives me the feeling you were on LSD instead of morphine. Have been addicted to heroin for 25 years and now sober for over 27 yrs, these things never happened to me. No hallucinations or porn shows in my head, but warmth and satisfaction and indifference to all the sadness and pain I felt. But also indifference to the world around me, to my friends and family. That ripped me apart for a long time. So glad I kicked the habit, but even after all these years, I can still feel the cravings sometimes.

      TOM, No there are no female singers that could pull this off as it takes the kind of feel of having lived with addiction as Marianne has to understand what she goes through to get through this song . Today's LA DE DA female singers could not touch this piece of lyrical genius. She has lived it & even in 1969 she had that feel . The song is more about the poor guy dying from an accident & pleading for Morphine to ease his agony than being addicted from your own desire for it. We pray that Marianne will survive her fight with Covid 19 & as one tough lady she has the will to win, especially after all she has been through in her life.

    nobody does lyrics like Marianne!

    • @ricktaylor4real
      @ricktaylor4real 5 лет назад +6

      Well, except in this case where the lyrics are by Jagger & Richards. She came up with the line “sister cocaine”, but Mick and Keith had most of the song written at that point. At that time, Marianne was pretty heavy into cocaine (amongst everything else). Sadly, she had to fight for any writing credits for the song though, finally winning co-writing credit (with Jagger & Richards) in 1998. Odd fact, she has said that while she wasn’t given those writing credits, it was Keith Richards, (& NOT Mick) who made sure she was paid royalties for it all of those years before she won her battle. I’ve always loved the Stones, but the older I get and the more I read about Mick, the more I believe he was and is an asshole! Seems like there are MANY good reasons why Keith doesn’t like him anymore either! Mick was certainly an asshole to Marianne! (And she certainly wasn’t the last woman he was an asshole to either!).

      @@ricktaylor4real The Stones did the same thing to your cousin, Mick Taylor. He was not given writing credits on SEVERAL songs, starting with his first album with the band, "Sticky Fingers."
      Greatest mistake the Rolling Stones made was not doing WHATEVER IT TOOK to keep Mick Taylor in the band. In addition to not paying him, his mates should have gotten him the help he needed for his addiction.
      They did not.
      I also have always loved the Stones, but I agree with you 100%, the more I learn about Mick Jagger, the more I believe he is/was an asshole. (and before everyone starts asking you if Mick Taylor is your cousin, I was fooling around-- I don't know if he is)

    I like Marianne Faithful. I was on a Morphine drip for 21 days in order to contain hi g h blood pressure while awaiting delivery of my baby.
    This angst, & darkness as expressed in her performance, I do not recall. I was in a safe, calm place on the drip,knowing Morphine doesn't cross the blood brain barrier to the unborn. Felt I wanted to share this
