Miyako, the pianist/guitarist, is affectionately named "The Golden Touch" by the other band members. She is a phenomenal musician and writes a lot of their music. Not sure where the "techno" reference came from because they are not a techno band. Lovebites primarily plays power metal, thrash metal, hard rock, rock, and soft ballads. Midori, the other lead guitarist is the "Crazy Shredder" and her and Miyako form one of the best pair of guitarists ever placed in the same band. They do amazing solos and duel harmonies in every song and really create amazing magic together. They are really tight.
Maybe from A Drop of Joker, Miyako's early band was somewhat techno (at least used some of it LIVE). However, they have never done anything techno since LB have been together although if they did I am sure it would awesome. Would love to see the band members dressed up for a Devo salute, I am not sure I would be able to make it to the end of the song!!!!
the intro riff definitely take riff from sort of techno/edm-ish, if you listen to one of the great 90s japanese guitarist Daita Itoh from band Siam Shade. He do lot of those double handed tapping mix with synth/techno-ish sounding as well
All members of Lovewbites have a solid classical background most of them starting to play the piano in their pre-school years at two or three years old. Miyako (black hair/guitarist & pianist) has played piano for twenty-eight of her thirty-one years and was probably heading for a career as a concert pianist until she picked up a guitar when at university, taught herself to play from a teaching manual that featured heavy metal riffs and she was hooked. It is arguable that the piano is her primary instrument and the guitar her second. Two years later she formed a metal band. The other members are also mutli-instrumentalists. The blond guitarist also plays piano and electronic keyboards, the bass player also plays guitar and drums. The drummer uses a piano to compose and the singer, who spent many years studying ballet, sometime plays the pano on stage. They are all insanely talented musicians at the top of the game, who like many other female Japanese musicians love to play hard rock and metal.

Some people say that they are redefining metal. They are breaking the walls of stereotypes in the metal scene. Their main influences are Metallica, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Angra, Slayer, Helloween, Dragonforce, and even Gary Moore. As you have realized, they shine in their live performances. They play (mostly) power metal but as great musicians they have no limitations; they also play thrash, heavy and hard rock, and play power ballads as well. Asami took ballet classes and used to be a R&B, soul and jazz singer; she was introduced to metal when she joined Lovebites. @@brandydynamite5877 I am eternally hopeful that after a few months 'break' for her mental/emotional health, Miho will decide to return to her friends and musical ambitions with Lovebites. From what I've read she had no problems with her fellow bandmates, but was dealing with personal issues concerning Covid and the loss of her father. I was personally moved when I watched the live performance of Journey to the Other Side - and all the other band members seemed especially serious during that performance (maybe just my imagination). There are TONS of great female bass players in Japan, but Miho's writing and positive spirit has always been an integral part of 'Lovebites'. I'm hoping the hiatus ends when Miho comes back.

Gifted, yes. Also insanely dedicated. It takes a LOT of study and practice and hard work practicing to make it look as if it's that easy for her. Great and awesome review of yours. Yes, everyone of the musicians can be the star of a band. This band is like all star dream band. The drummer Haruna is a small woman, shorter than 5', but with monstrous power and stamina, and with finest drum fills of finest technique. Yes, she is a beast. I think other comments will explain about the other musicians. They do this in the same power, speed, and quality of the sound for two hours in high heels. The singer/dancer Asami even leap off a platform with high heels which is crazy. Their influences from classic is mainly of Miyako the dark haired guitarist/pianist who is the main composer of the band (all the members compose and write as well). Someone calling this "techno" is hilarious. Most fans call it power metal. I call it speed metal, which was the direction co-founder and bassist Miho stated she wanted it to go, and IMHO it certainly has. She has departed, sadly, which throws their future into question. We shall see. Drummer Haruna is a good friend of Band-Maid drummer Akane, BTW. Re shoes: She wears flats at the drums and then puts on heels for final bows. They have a considerable body of work to dig into. They did a tour (?) with speed metal group Dragonforce. They did a couple of concerts with US hard rock group Halestorm, who had hoped to do a full tour with them before the Covid mess hit. Guitarist and pianist Miyako also composes. She is a musical genius. This etude is supposed to remind us that Chopin fled Poland ahead of the severalth Russian takeover. His country was dying. So the connection of "Swan Song" here. The blonde guitarist is Midori. I see her as the sunny goddess of mercy to Miyako's serious goddess of justice, sort of. The Dynamic Duo. Asami is the lead singer, who had not done metal before Lovebites. I believe most of the lyrics are hers. I think she is getting into it. Lovebites is in the opinions of many, the pinnacle of Japanese metal, which is an impressive thing. Japan currently has more quality rock and metal bands than the US I believe. Involving the audience is more often done in Japan than most places. Also, all-female rock bands are not common here, but there are MANY excellent ones in Japan. We can suggest a few? Band-Maid Nemophila Bridear Aldious (just lost their third lead vocalist, and that position has so far been lead songwriter as well, so there are three very different eras to look into. Maki Oyama, a powerful metal singer, is rumored next?) Exist-Trace has maintained the same members for years. It is a "visual kei" group, meaning theatrical and usually with gender bending, so don't be thrown off if some appear "masculine." Bad Baby Bomb is the current project of Lisa13, who was lead guitarist-founder of thrash metal group Moth in Lilac. BBB is kinda the opposite - quirky-girly-alternate reality vibe. Show-Ya began in 1981, blew the hard rock/metal scene wide open for women, and after some time apart, have come back together to foster female rock. They hold a festival for all female rock acts in Japan every year. "Naon no Yaon" The godmothers of female rock and metal in Japan. On this side of the pond, check out "Plush" and "The Warning." The Warning is a sister act doing metal. They do some covers but lately it's mostly their own compositions, and they are GOOD. There are lots more; that's a start.
Yeah, Lovebites toured the UK with DragonForce. I highly recommend watching their music video for Golden Destination as it includes impressions from said tour. Plus it is a fantastic song to boot. And I would add Gacharic Spin to your list, though they are hard to even assign a genre to. But there are many more.

MVs, MindSet and I Wish I. Angelina 1/3 is I think a great asset - voice, personality, actress of sorts (as in MindSet). And when Hana plays guitar or Hana and Yuri both drum, that's a nice option to have.

Oh man, where to start. A flute nerd? Now that's something I haven't heard before. But it's great, I really enjoy what you're doing. This was a really thorough analysis. Lovebites are a metal band as you might have figured out by now. And they are as metal as it gets. Ten layers of steel with a chromium layer metal. This is an amazing performance that is well-suited for an analysis, but it is not really representative of their general sound. These ladies can go super hard and fast and they are simply phenomenal. Please check out more from them, they won't ever disappoint you. You are also probably about to go down the Japanese music rabbit hole. It is a very, very deep one. Angel of Salvation by Galneryus is another good one. Galneryus are a power/prog/neoclassical metal band. It's even more epic than Swan Song and they incorporate a whole orchestra. In their song Rising, Miyako switches from piano to guitar in less than two seconds. It is amazing to watch her play the piano in that song with the guitar on her back and then she backs up and slings it around and starts strumming. The Etude ("Revolutionary Etude") came out at the time (year 1831) of the failed uprising in Warsaw Poland against the Russian occupancy at the time. It emotes Chopin's emotional state. He would never sat foot in his beloved homeland again. The etude is not on the album (I have the album) but here they bookends the song with the etude and the Miyako composed piano outro as you can see with the lyrics how fitting the etude is with the song.

The piano is a backing track when Miyako isn't playing, as is the second guitar part at the the end when she is back on the piano. The "whooooa -oh - oh -oooooh" is mostly a backing track as well; I'm sure there are people in the crowd that are singing along, but I doubt the crowd is THAT good. The hitting on the strings thing is called tapping, and it was popularized by the late, great Eddie Van Halen. Essentially, the guitarist mutes their strings with the right hand, frets with the left hand, and instead of strumming with a pick, they tap (hammer on) the string(s) with their right finger(s), usually the index and middle finger, and pull off with whichever left finger is on the corresponding fret. Some additional minor muting may be going on with the left hand depending on the guitarist. I feel like I didn't adequately explain it, but it's a pretty easy technique to learn and can be made somewhat complicated the more you get into it. I would never put tapping into the "advanced" category of guitar techniques; the only thing that makes it difficult for me is speed, but like anything fast in music, as long as you start off slow and practice, you'll be fine. I like doing it more on bass guitar than guitar, especially when I use my wah pedal with it. It looks and sounds cool, though, and Midori (blonde) and Miyako (brunette) are brilliant at it both together and individually. Miho, the bass guitarist who left the band in August 2021, does tapping in their cover of Helloween's "Eagle Fly Free." Thanks for reacting to LOVEBITES. I'm glad you liked them and hope you'll see more of them! The Japanese music scene is incredible for rock and metal. Since you're a flutist, I think you'd especially enjoy a Japanese group called Wagakki Band. They're sometimes rock, sometimes metal, but always incorporate traditional Japanese instruments and vocal style into their music. Their cover of "Senbonzakura" is where a lot of people start out, and while there are a lot of live versions and a video (where you can't hear the guitar for some reason), I'm recommending the live version from a fantastic show in 2018. No guests singers, no orchestra, no covid, just the band's eight musicians at the height of their considerable powers playing a great song for an energetic crowd. what you are talking about at around 30:00 is a technique called tapping and it's a form of legato playing on guitar (or other similar instruments). in "normal" guitar playing, you press the string down at a certain fret so it lays on the metal fretwire which forms the end point of the string vibration, then you pick the string and it will sound at a pitch defined by it's tuning and the fret you pressed down on. now with legato playing, you don't pick the string but instead you hit the string harder with your fretting finger so the string hitting the fretwire itself will make it vibrate without the need to strike it with a pick. This is called a "hammer-on", then if you already have fretted a lower note on the same string, you can pull the first finger off the string in a certain way, kind of plucking it to let it ring in the pitch of the new, lower note that you already fretted. this is called a "pull-off". The only difference with tapping (as opposed to just regular legato playing) is that you incorporate the picking hand into this as well, using those free fingers to do hammer-ons and pull-offs which gives you more fingers to work with and especially makes it possible to play runs that would require impossible stretches if you tried to play them with just one hand. Some people can actually play a guitar using ONLY this style with all 8 fingers on the fretboard and no picking at all. This results in them bein able to play stuff very reminiscent to what a pianist would do with one hand playing lead parts while the other hand does bass parts.
This Etude is a left hand practice exercise with very little emphasis on the right hand. However, Miyako, in this performance, increases the right hand emphasis considerably. God I love this band! ..... For a more rockier sound check out Band Maid if you wish. Great reaction :)

Katie, as you mentioned that you love rock music mingled with classical music, I wonder that nobody yet suggested you to hear some songs from "Unlucky Morpheus" (or Ankimo, as this is the name the band uses most times); another japanese band, they call their style "(neoclassical) technical symphonic power metal", if I remember it rightly. One of the band members, Jill, is a world-class violinist (and I usually don't use that term, for instance I wouldn't say Miyako from Lovebites is a world-class pianist although I fully respect her great skills that allow her to outperform "ordinary" piano playing easily). TBH, I've got to say, all the members of that band are outstanding musicians. You'll hear the classical influence in every piece played by Unlucky Morpheus (their composer, the guitarist Shiren, who usually is placed next to violinist Jill, is very much into classical music); so let me suggest the songs "Miseria of the Slaughter"「殺戮のミセリア」and "Knight of Sword" (URLs are ruclips.net/video/YyRTfQI7Zaw/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/5oHPCQucm3U/видео.html respectively). These are official live videos, but violinist Jill's excellence is shown even better in the song "The Tower of the Blood" (there is a bootleg video of it on YT). Another opportunity to hear her brilliant violin playing is her project "Quadratum" with three other members of Unlucky Morpheus (except vocalist Fuki and above-mentioned Shiren); there they play covers of well-known challenging rock songs, Jill interpreting the guitar (solo) parts. Check for exemple the amazing cover of Yngwie Malmsteens "Far Beyond The Sun" (ruclips.net/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/видео.html ; note that Malmsteen himself was classicaly trained and heavily influenced by Paganini) . Some more informations on Jill: she began playing the violin at the age of three - the same age Miyako from Lovebites began with piano - and later attended the High School affiliated with the Faculty of Music of Tokyo University of the Arts, from where she graduated with honors, and studied then at the very same Faculty - and graduated with honors again. She had some success in the classical realms playing in Japan and in Europe with an instrumental ensemble, and has won several high accolades in her home country and internationally; she then decided to join Unlucky Morpheus, and that was maybe the best decision she could make! I have now listened to every song recorded by Lovebites and they really don't have a bad song. Many are great and a few are masterpieces, like Swan Song. There is another Lovebites song that you should listen to immediately. No reaction video just listen since there is no video of them performing this song. The song is Dystopia Symphony and it is on their most recent EP called Glory, Glory to the World. I think it is another Miyako masterpiece with a lot of classical elements.
Wow, for a first reaction to Lovebites, this is jumping in the deep end! Miyako is a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. She wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Chopin Etude. Welcome to the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background: They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics. They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. This is considered by many of their fans to be one of their masterpieces--though in truth, they do not have any weak songs. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Thanks for the info. I didn't get a chance to delve into the band members much before doing the reaction. I do enjoy heavy metal, but it's not something I listen to often, but I really liked LoveBites, so I might have to add them to my Spotify playlist.

There are several hundred all female Rock/Metal bands in Japan. Miyako has her own home studio and has written the music for roughly half of Lovebites songs. The other half are by the other band members. Asami (vocals) and Miho (bass) are the prime lyricists. Midori and Miyako work in Miyako's studio on their guitars to ensure coordination on stage. We of the Wolfpack are now waiting on What's Next!! Miho has left the band, due to the death of her father. Asami has announced her upcoming Wedding. Miyako has just announced she is getting married and having a Baby. So looks like we are to have to hold tight for a while.
Yeah that's Miyako, she mentioned she wrote this song with a lot of different Chopin motives in it. She usually puts classical themes on the songs she writes, if you enjoy this kind of stuff you should check Dystopia Symphony, that is her song from this year's EP, really good, though there is no video and only audio. Asami, the singer, didn't even know about Heavy Metal when they found her. She was a R&B singer that decided to try with rock to try to find more success and suddenly this heavy metal band crossed with her demo tape. She is also classically trained, can play the piano a bit though not at Miyako's level, and she was also very well trained as a ballet ballerina.
I'm glad you liked this performance. LOVEBITES became my new favorite metal band after watching their first couple of videos. I'm old school metalhead from the eighties and I became a fan of the five great musicians in LOVEBITES. I watch their concert dvds and listen to their albums in my car when I'm driving. Since you play the flute I recommend Wagakki Band. They have a flute player that's a crazy metalhead. Also there are 3 other musicians that play traditional Asian instruments.
I believe the purpose of that 'tapping' guitar part you're wondering about was to re-introduce some musical elements from earlier in the song to help tie everything together in the end. That form of tapping is one of the ways you can play legato on a guitar. Lovebites a techno band?!? Not sure why they told you that. Miyako - The pianist, has been trained in classical piano since she was 3 and only picked up the guitar when she was in high school. Miyako writes the majority of Lovebites song with Asami (the singer) usually writes the lyrics. For Asami, if you want to get an idea of her range and power, take a look at the live version of Holy War. As to why they are all in white dresses, in an interview Asami said, "We're all girls, we don't want to dress like boys. Also, we are all small so it's easier to see us on stage." I've a seen a few reactions to this song, only a couple from people with a more technical understand of the music itself. One noticed the key change into the chorus after the guitar solo, another said "ooh key change!.. Oh wait, it's not a key change". I had to try to figure out what was going on here - the verses and the guitar solo are in B flat minor, while the pre-chorus and chorus are in D minor. The key change from verse to pre-chorus is subtle, and there's no key change from pre-chorus to chorus. But there *is* a key change after the guitar solo into the chorus, *but* it's to the same key that previous choruses are in. Key change from chorus to verse just kinda happens & I didn't even notice it until I tried to work the chords out. D minor and B flat minor share one note, F, so the change isn't too drastic. Also, there's definitely a backing track involved. Shouldn't take anything away from their performance though, as it was only used for what they just can't do live - like play piano runs & lead guitar at the same time. There was definitely a choir track as well. I'm sure the crowd was singing along, but there's no way they were that perfect! Anyway, the track means that they have to play to a click & have to absolutely nail the tempo, otherwise the track will start in the wrong place & it will be a disaster.
Thanks for the chord analysis! Very interesting indeed and really shows the complexity. And my music theory knowledge isn't as developed as I would like, so I don't necessarily pick stuff like that up on a first or second listen. And I never knock anyone using backtracks. I'm a solo artist so everything I do is backtracks. It definitely makes it harder sometimes for the reason you mentioned, you're essentially playing to a complex click track. It's amazing that everything is still spot on and sound expressive and musical.

Petite women who wear white dresses and high heels to standout from other bands and be seen easier on stage. Yes , asami the singer studied ballet for 12 years, and 3 others in the band plus Myako , all studied piano too. This a very educated band ladies indeed. Thats why they are all so good at arranging their parts and playing them flawlessly live. Asami plays a fewbits ofpiano ina couple of songs. She also comes from a classical and Rn B background , not metal.
a lot of singer in power, symphonic and prog metal all have more classical training and not a metal back ground to being with. Because they thing most people not everyone mind you is that metal music is like 80% clean vocals and 20% harsh.
Not a guitar player; bass player here, but where you strike the notes makes a big difference. If you strike near the bridge, the note is brighter and on a bass, quackier. If you strike near the neck, the same note will have a warmer tone. If you strike over the neck, you can get more percussive, even getting a clack from the string hitting the frets. Using a pick will produce more treble, using your fingers more bass; you can get a lot of tonal variation in how you pluck with your fingers. Where and how you strike a string makes a huge difference in the note. Miya is great on piano and guitar; I love watching her play and her vibe. Lovebites (along with Babymetal and Nemophila) is one of my favorite Japanese bands. But that she plays piano does not surprise me, some elements are easier to learn and understand on a piano, like intervals. But thirds and fifths are more apparent on a bass than piano or guitar. Not intuitive to me, but it's true.

Miyako is a classically trained pianist from the age of 3. You talked so much over the video you missed how meaningful the lyrics were. Miyoko also wrote this song, she is very talented. A lot of the Japanese bands play more than one instrument and truly work hard to please their audiences. The Japanese motto is: give 110% or don’t do it at all. Lovebites, Band Maid, Uverworld, One Ok Rock, My First Story, Baby Metal, Sokoninaru are great Japanese bands with large international followings. Japanese artists are much more all around talented than, for instance, Korean artists who depend on their altered faces by cosmetic surgery rather than talent.

Techno Band? LoveBites is 100 percent Heavy Metal. There's not one song in their discography that is Techno. You need to listen to more songs by them. Their influences are Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and Slayer, Metallica etc. Those are in no way Techno influences. Whoever told you they were Techno must be thinking of a different band. The reason they wear white dresses is because they don't want to be like every other metal band and wear black. They said they are sophisticated women who can rock heavy metal and the dresses express that message for them. LoveBites is my favorite band along with Unleash The Archers which is another great power metal band.

Miyako, the pianist/guitarist, is affectionately named "The Golden Touch" by the other band members. She is a phenomenal musician and writes a lot of their music. Not sure where the "techno" reference came from because they are not a techno band. Lovebites primarily plays power metal, thrash metal, hard rock, rock, and soft ballads. Midori, the other lead guitarist is the "Crazy Shredder" and her and Miyako form one of the best pair of guitarists ever placed in the same band. They do amazing solos and duel harmonies in every song and really create amazing magic together. They are really tight.
Maybe from A Drop of Joker, Miyako's early band was somewhat techno (at least used some of it LIVE). However, they have never done anything techno since LB have been together although if they did I am sure it would awesome. Would love to see the band members dressed up for a Devo salute, I am not sure I would be able to make it to the end of the song!!!!

the intro riff definitely take riff from sort of techno/edm-ish, if you listen to one of the great 90s japanese guitarist Daita Itoh from band Siam Shade. He do lot of those double handed tapping mix with synth/techno-ish sounding as well
It's "dual" harmonies but even then, that's incorrect because you can't harmonize when there's only one voice or instrument.
All members of Lovewbites have a solid classical background most of them starting to play the piano in their pre-school years at two or three years old. Miyako (black hair/guitarist & pianist) has played piano for twenty-eight of her thirty-one years and was probably heading for a career as a concert pianist until she picked up a guitar when at university, taught herself to play from a teaching manual that featured heavy metal riffs and she was hooked. It is arguable that the piano is her primary instrument and the guitar her second. Two years later she formed a metal band. The other members are also mutli-instrumentalists. The blond guitarist also plays piano and electronic keyboards, the bass player also plays guitar and drums. The drummer uses a piano to compose and the singer, who spent many years studying ballet, sometime plays the pano on stage. They are all insanely talented musicians at the top of the game, who like many other female Japanese musicians love to play hard rock and metal.

Wow. Such a great in-depth analysis of this song. Welcomed to the mind-blowing world of Lovebites. Yes, these women are extremely talented, skillful and versatile musicians. Some people say that they are redefining metal. They are breaking the walls of stereotypes in the metal scene. Their main influences are Metallica, Iron Maiden, Helloween, Angra, Slayer, Helloween, Dragonforce, and even Gary Moore. As you have realized, they shine in their live performances. They play (mostly) power metal but as great musicians they have no limitations; they also play thrash, heavy and hard rock, and play power ballads as well. Asami took ballet classes and used to be a R&B, soul and jazz singer; she was introduced to metal when she joined Lovebites. Yes, I’d dare to say that the duet guitar solos are already legendary, even though the band formed in 2016. If you want nice vocals and piano, I suggest “Empty daydream”, “Epilogue”, Edge of the world”, “Liar” (all live)

@@brandydynamite5877 I am eternally hopeful that after a few months 'break' for her mental/emotional health, Miho will decide to return to her friends and musical ambitions with Lovebites. From what I've read she had no problems with her fellow bandmates, but was dealing with personal issues concerning Covid and the loss of her father. I was personally moved when I watched the live performance of Journey to the Other Side - and all the other band members seemed especially serious during that performance (maybe just my imagination). There are TONS of great female bass players in Japan, but Miho's writing and positive spirit has always been an integral part of 'Lovebites'. I'm hoping the hiatus ends when Miho comes back.

To make us feel worse she picked up the guitar at 18 and self taught!!!! Having Midori as your partner has also helped but still Miyako will inspire you or I am sure like most totally intimidate you (I am in this camp).

Great and awesome review of yours. Yes, everyone of the musicians can be the star of a band. This band is like all star dream band. The drummer Haruna is a small woman, shorter than 5', but with monstrous power and stamina, and with finest drum fills of finest technique. Yes, she is a beast. I think other comments will explain about the other musicians. They do this in the same power, speed, and quality of the sound for two hours in high heels. The singer/dancer Asami even leap off a platform with high heels which is crazy. Their influences from classic is mainly of Miyako the dark haired guitarist/pianist who is the main composer of the band (all the members compose and write as well). She loves romantic era classic music such as of Rachmaninov, Chopin, Beethoven, and Dovolzark.

Most fans call it power metal.
I call it speed metal, which was the direction co-founder and bassist Miho stated she wanted it to go, and IMHO it certainly has.
She has departed, sadly, which throws their future into question. We shall see.
Drummer Haruna is a good friend of Band-Maid drummer Akane, BTW. Re shoes: She wears flats at the drums and then puts on heels for final bows.
They have a considerable body of work to dig into.
They did a tour (?) with speed metal group Dragonforce.
They did a couple of concerts with US hard rock group Halestorm, who had hoped to do a full tour with them before the Covid mess hit.
Guitarist and pianist Miyako also composes. She is a musical genius.
This etude is supposed to remind us that Chopin fled Poland ahead of the severalth Russian takeover. His country was dying. So the connection of "Swan Song" here.
The blonde guitarist is Midori. I see her as the sunny goddess of mercy to Miyako's serious goddess of justice, sort of. The Dynamic Duo.
Asami is the lead singer, who had not done metal before Lovebites. I believe most of the lyrics are hers. I think she is getting into it.
Lovebites is in the opinions of many, the pinnacle of Japanese metal, which is an impressive thing. Japan currently has more quality rock and metal bands than the US I believe.
Involving the audience is more often done in Japan than most places.
Also, all-female rock bands are not common here, but there are MANY excellent ones in Japan. We can suggest a few?

Exist-Trace has maintained the same members for years. It is a "visual kei" group, meaning theatrical and usually with gender bending, so don't be thrown off if some appear "masculine."
Bad Baby Bomb is the current project of Lisa13, who was lead guitarist-founder of thrash metal group Moth in Lilac. BBB is kinda the opposite - quirky-girly-alternate reality vibe.
Show-Ya began in 1981, blew the hard rock/metal scene wide open for women, and after some time apart, have come back together to foster female rock. They hold a festival for all female rock acts in Japan every year. "Naon no Yaon" The godmothers of female rock and metal in Japan.
On this side of the pond, check out "Plush" and "The Warning." The Warning is a sister act doing metal. They do some covers but lately it's mostly their own compositions, and they are GOOD.
There are lots more; that's a start.

Yeah, Lovebites toured the UK with DragonForce. I highly recommend watching their music video for Golden Destination as it includes impressions from said tour. Plus it is a fantastic song to boot. And I would add Gacharic Spin to your list, though they are hard to even assign a genre to. But there are many more.

Angelina 1/3 is I think a great asset - voice, personality, actress of sorts (as in MindSet). And when Hana plays guitar or Hana and Yuri both drum, that's a nice option to have.

Oh man, where to start. A flute nerd? Now that's something I haven't heard before. But it's great, I really enjoy what you're doing. This was a really thorough analysis.
Lovebites are a metal band as you might have figured out by now. And they are as metal as it gets. Ten layers of steel with a chromium layer metal. This is an amazing performance that is well-suited for an analysis, but it is not really representative of their general sound. These ladies can go super hard and fast and they are simply phenomenal. Please check out more from them, they won't ever disappoint you.
You are also probably about to go down the Japanese music rabbit hole. It is a very, very deep one. Angel of Salvation by Galneryus is another good one. To watch him jump around for 2 hours (I am hyperactive so he was my hero..LOL) and then play the flute on one leg was mind blowing and the band is fantastic. In their song Rising, Miyako switches from piano to guitar in less than two seconds. It is amazing to watch her play the piano in that song with the guitar on her back and then she backs up and slings it around and starts strumming. The Etude ("Revolutionary Etude") came out at the time (year 1831) of the failed uprising in Warsaw Poland against the Russian occupancy at the time. It emotes Chopin's emotional state. He would never sat foot in his beloved homeland again. The etude is not on the album (I have the album) but here they bookends the song with the etude and the Miyako composed piano outro as you can see with the lyrics how fitting the etude is with the song.

The piano is a backing track when Miyako isn't playing, as is the second guitar part at the the end when she is back on the piano. The "whooooa -oh - oh -oooooh" is mostly a backing track as well; I'm sure there are people in the crowd that are singing along, but I doubt the crowd is THAT good.
The hitting on the strings thing is called tapping, and it was popularized by the late, great Eddie Van Halen. Essentially, the guitarist mutes their strings with the right hand, frets with the left hand, and instead of strumming with a pick, they tap (hammer on) the string(s) with their right finger(s), usually the index and middle finger, and pull off with whichever left finger is on the corresponding fret. Some additional minor muting may be going on with the left hand depending on the guitarist. I feel like I didn't adequately explain it, but it's a pretty easy technique to learn and can be made somewhat complicated the more you get into it. I would never put tapping into the "advanced" category of guitar techniques; the only thing that makes it difficult for me is speed, but like anything fast in music, as long as you start off slow and practice, you'll be fine. I like doing it more on bass guitar than guitar, especially when I use my wah pedal with it. It looks and sounds cool, though, and Midori (blonde) and Miyako (brunette) are brilliant at it both together and individually. Miho, the bass guitarist who left the band in August 2021, does tapping in their cover of Helloween's "Eagle Fly Free."

Since you're a flutist, I think you'd especially enjoy a Japanese group called Wagakki Band. They're sometimes rock, sometimes metal, but always incorporate traditional Japanese instruments and vocal style into their music. Their cover of "Senbonzakura" is where a lot of people start out, and while there are a lot of live versions and a video (where you can't hear the guitar for some reason), I'm recommending the live version from a fantastic show in 2018. No guests singers, no orchestra, no covid, just the band's eight musicians at the height of their considerable powers playing a great song for an energetic crowd. Here's the link.

what you are talking about at around 30:00 is a technique called tapping and it's a form of legato playing on guitar (or other similar instruments). in "normal" guitar playing, you press the string down at a certain fret so it lays on the metal fretwire which forms the end point of the string vibration, then you pick the string and it will sound at a pitch defined by it's tuning and the fret you pressed down on. now with legato playing, you don't pick the string but instead you hit the string harder with your fretting finger so the string hitting the fretwire itself will make it vibrate without the need to strike it with a pick. This is called a "hammer-on", then if you already have fretted a lower note on the same string, you can pull the first finger off the string in a certain way, kind of plucking it to let it ring in the pitch of the new, lower note that you already fretted. this is called a "pull-off". The only difference with tapping (as opposed to just regular legato playing) is that you incorporate the picking hand into this as well, using those free fingers to do hammer-ons and pull-offs which gives you more fingers to work with and especially makes it possible to play runs that would require impossible stretches if you tried to play them with just one hand.
Some people can actually play a guitar using ONLY this style with all 8 fingers on the fretboard and no picking at all. This results in them bein able to play stuff very reminiscent to what a pianist would do with one hand playing lead parts while the other hand does bass parts.

This Etude is a left hand practice exercise with very little emphasis on the right hand. However, Miyako, in this performance, increases the right hand emphasis considerably. God I love this band! ..... For a more rockier sound check out Band Maid if you wish. Great reaction :)

When you consider that "a lot" of the musicians playing drum, guitar, shamisen and everything else under the Sun that is possible, is their ~5th instrument and started playing piano at 2 /3 years old! Katie, as you mentioned that you love rock music mingled with classical music, I wonder that nobody yet suggested you to hear some songs from "Unlucky Morpheus" (or Ankimo, as this is the name the band uses most times); another japanese band, they call their style "(neoclassical) technical symphonic power metal", if I remember it rightly. One of the band members, Jill, is a world-class violinist (and I usually don't use that term, for instance I wouldn't say Miyako from Lovebites is a world-class pianist although I fully respect her great skills that allow her to outperform "ordinary" piano playing easily). TBH, I've got to say, all the members of that band are outstanding musicians.
You'll hear the classical influence in every piece played by Unlucky Morpheus (their composer, the guitarist Shiren, who usually is placed next to violinist Jill, is very much into classical music); so let me suggest the songs "Miseria of the Slaughter"「殺戮のミセリア」and "Knight of Sword" (URLs are ruclips.net/video/YyRTfQI7Zaw/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/5oHPCQucm3U/видео.html respectively). These are official live videos, but violinist Jill's excellence is shown even better in the song "The Tower of the Blood" (there is a bootleg video of it on YT). Another opportunity to hear her brilliant violin playing is her project "Quadratum" with three other members of Unlucky Morpheus (except vocalist Fuki and above-mentioned Shiren); there they play covers of well-known challenging rock songs, Jill interpreting the guitar (solo) parts. Check for exemple the amazing cover of Yngwie Malmsteens "Far Beyond The Sun" (ruclips.net/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/видео.html ; note that Malmsteen himself was classicaly trained and heavily influenced by Paganini) .
Some more informations on Jill: she began playing the violin at the age of three - the same age Miyako from Lovebites began with piano - and later attended the High School affiliated with the Faculty of Music of Tokyo University of the Arts, from where she graduated with honors, and studied then at the very same Faculty - and graduated with honors again. She had some success in the classical realms playing in Japan and in Europe with an instrumental ensemble, and has won several high accolades in her home country and internationally; she then decided to join Unlucky Morpheus, and that was maybe the best decision she could make! I hope you'll have plenty of fun exploring that music!

Welcome to the music of Lovebites. Swan Song, written by Miyako, is one that I would put in the category of masterpiece. I have now listened to every song recorded by Lovebites and they really don't have a bad song. Many are great and a few are masterpieces, like Swan Song. There is another Lovebites song that you should listen to immediately. No reaction video just listen since there is no video of them performing this song. The song is Dystopia Symphony and it is on their most recent EP called Glory, Glory to the World. I think it is another Miyako masterpiece with a lot of classical elements.
Asami, the vocalist, has a background as a ballerina which she adds to this song too.
Wow, for a first reaction to Lovebites, this is jumping in the deep end! Miyako is a professional-level classical concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. She wrote “Swan Song” using elements from several classical pieces including the Chopin Etude.
Welcome to the best new metal band to come along in decades. In their five years of existence as a band, they set a standard that easily puts them on a par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. Other reviewers have described them as alien superheroes disguised as young women, angels sent to save us, princesses of metal, and angry bridesmaids. Whatever the description, I think one can say they have given metal a badly needed makeover and maybe a new lease on life. They have themselves said that part of their mission is to save heavy metal from darkness and obscurity. Some background:
They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and soul of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the greatest European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other bands. The whole group then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she also trained in ballet). Miyako has composed most of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics.
They studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance is that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters.
This is considered by many of their fans to be one of their masterpieces--though in truth, they do not have any weak songs. They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like a demon). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band."

If you liked this song a bit, I suggest you, these others that you will like. "A frozen serenade" "Empty Daydream" "Epilogue", live 2019. They have other songs but Powermetal. You left their names, Haruna, drums, Miho, bass, Asami, vocals, Midori, lead guitar, Miyako, rhythmic guitar and piano. Miyako studied the career of pianist at 3 years old and at 16 years old, she began to play the guitar and she is almost as good as Midori. Miyako in an interview said that classical music and heavy metal have many things in common

There are several hundred all female Rock/Metal bands in Japan. Miyako has her own home studio and has written the music for roughly half of Lovebites songs. The other half are by the other band members. Asami (vocals) and Miho (bass) are the prime lyricists. Midori and Miyako work in Miyako's studio on their guitars to ensure coordination on stage.
We of the Wolfpack are now waiting on What's Next!! Miho has left the band, due to the death of her father. Asami has announced her upcoming Wedding. Miyako has just announced she is getting married and having a Baby. So looks like we are to have to hold tight for a while.

Yeah that's Miyako, she mentioned she wrote this song with a lot of different Chopin motives in it. She usually puts classical themes on the songs she writes, if you enjoy this kind of stuff you should check Dystopia Symphony, that is her song from this year's EP, really good, though there is no video and only audio.
Asami, the singer, didn't even know about Heavy Metal when they found her. She was a R&B singer that decided to try with rock to try to find more success and suddenly this heavy metal band crossed with her demo tape. She is also classically trained, can play the piano a bit though not at Miyako's level, and she was also very well trained as a ballet ballerina.

I'm glad you liked this performance. LOVEBITES became my new favorite metal band after watching their first couple of videos. I'm old school metalhead from the eighties and I became a fan of the five great musicians in LOVEBITES. I watch their concert dvds and listen to their albums in my car when I'm driving. Since you play the flute I recommend Wagakki Band. They have a flute player that's a crazy metalhead. Also there are 3 other musicians that play traditional Asian instruments.
I believe the purpose of that 'tapping' guitar part you're wondering about was to re-introduce some musical elements from earlier in the song to help tie everything together in the end. That form of tapping is one of the ways you can play legato on a guitar. I haven't seen the end of the video yet, but I can't wait for your reaction to where Miyako ends up at the end of the song :0) (good enough analysis to make me sub)

Miyako - The pianist, has been trained in classical piano since she was 3 and only picked up the guitar when she was in high school. Miyako writes the majority of Lovebites song with Asami (the singer) usually writes the lyrics.
For Asami, if you want to get an idea of her range and power, take a look at the live version of Holy War.
As to why they are all in white dresses, in an interview Asami said, "We're all girls, we don't want to dress like boys. Also, we are all small so it's easier to see us on stage."
Haruna, the drummer, is the shortest at 4 ft 9 and Miyako is the tallest at about 5ft 7.

I've a seen a few reactions to this song, only a couple from people with a more technical understand of the music itself. One noticed the key change into the chorus after the guitar solo, another said "ooh key change!.. Oh wait, it's not a key change". I had to try to figure out what was going on here - the verses and the guitar solo are in B flat minor, while the pre-chorus and chorus are in D minor. The key change from verse to pre-chorus is subtle, and there's no key change from pre-chorus to chorus. But there *is* a key change after the guitar solo into the chorus, *but* it's to the same key that previous choruses are in. Key change from chorus to verse just kinda happens & I didn't even notice it until I tried to work the chords out. D minor and B flat minor share one note, F, so the change isn't too drastic.
Also, there's definitely a backing track involved. Shouldn't take anything away from their performance though, as it was only used for what they just can't do live - like play piano runs & lead guitar at the same time. There was definitely a choir track as well. I'm sure the crowd was singing along, but there's no way they were that perfect! Anyway, the track means that they have to play to a click & have to absolutely nail the tempo, otherwise the track will start in the wrong place & it will be a disaster.
Thanks for the chord analysis! Very interesting indeed and really shows the complexity. And my music theory knowledge isn't as developed as I would like, so I don't necessarily pick stuff like that up on a first or second listen.
And I never knock anyone using backtracks. I'm a solo artist so everything I do is backtracks. It definitely makes it harder sometimes for the reason you mentioned, you're essentially playing to a complex click track. It's amazing that everything is still spot on and sound expressive and musical.

They play Power, Speed, Thrash, Prog, Rock, Ballads and classical piano/metal, and LIVE their insane talent is on total display. I heard someone once describe Lovebites as Metallica but with a good drummer.
I prefer their heavier stuff like Stand and Deliver or MDO but I’m an 80’s metal head and guitarist so my tastes run heavier.

Yes , asami the singer studied ballet for 12 years, and 3 others in the band plus Myako , all studied piano too. This a very educated band ladies indeed. Thats why they are all so good at arranging their parts and playing them flawlessly live. Asami plays a fewbits ofpiano ina couple of songs. She also comes from a classical and Rn B background , not metal.

a lot of singer in power, symphonic and prog metal all have more classical training and not a metal back ground to being with. Because they thing most people not everyone mind you is that metal music is like 80% clean vocals and 20% harsh.

Not a guitar player; bass player here, but where you strike the notes makes a big difference. If you strike near the bridge, the note is brighter and on a bass, quackier. If you strike near the neck, the same note will have a warmer tone. If you strike over the neck, you can get more percussive, even getting a clack from the string hitting the frets. Using a pick will produce more treble, using your fingers more bass; you can get a lot of tonal variation in how you pluck with your fingers. Where and how you strike a string makes a huge difference in the note.
Miya is great on piano and guitar; I love watching her play and her vibe. Lovebites (along with Babymetal and Nemophila) is one of my favorite Japanese bands. But that she plays piano does not surprise me, some elements are easier to learn and understand on a piano, like intervals. But thirds and fifths are more apparent on a bass than piano or guitar. Not intuitive to me, but it's true.

I was about to suggest the Wagakki Band next as it has a talented ninja flute player (a shakuhachi in fact), but I see that [Homura & Akatsuki no hito] has already been suggested, I can only second this suggestion, you will definitely like it.
What about violin + metal then ? Also Fuki, the singer has a wonderful vibrato, and she changes her singing voice in this one when she switches from the narrator to the princess. Plus all musicians are headbanging during playing, not an easy task...

Miyako is a classically trained pianist from the age of 3. You talked so much over the video you missed how meaningful the lyrics were. Miyoko also wrote this song, she is very talented. A lot of the Japanese bands play more than one instrument and truly work hard to please their audiences. The Japanese motto is: give 110% or don’t do it at all.
Lovebites, Band Maid, Uverworld, One Ok Rock, My First Story, Baby Metal, Sokoninaru are great Japanese bands with large international followings. Japanese artists are much more all around talented than, for instance, Korean artists who depend on their altered faces by cosmetic surgery rather than talent.

Techno Band? LoveBites is 100 percent Heavy Metal. There's not one song in their discography that is Techno. You need to listen to more songs by them. Their influences are Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and Slayer, Metallica etc. Those are in no way Techno influences. Whoever told you they were Techno must be thinking of a different band. The reason they wear white dresses is because they don't want to be like every other metal band and wear black. They said they are sophisticated women who can rock heavy metal and the dresses express that message for them. LoveBites is my favorite band along with Unleash The Archers which is another great power metal band.
