Kids were walking around everywhere with their arms and heads covered with black and blue marks. They got those bruises just from messing around with their home-made num-chuks by themselves!!!!! Lol!!!!
I remember there being cool looking "butterfly" yo-yo's that looked easier to do tricks with, but they were always sold out. Then when I finally got a sweet translucent green Duncan one, yo-yo's weren't cool anymore.
This was a couple years ago, not in the 90s, but I had and learned on a plastic Duncan Butterfly. Then when I decided to get more serious about it I got a N12 and after that a Gentry Stein Shutter. The ones termed "unresponsive" are the ones you can do all the super flashy string tricks with because they don't come back until you cast some yoyo magic on them. It's been awhile since I've practiced so I'm probably pretty rusty at it, but at one point I practiced hours a day and learned a lot of tricks. I used to even do it in public on occasion and people would come up and talk to me about it and watch. Nowadays I'm sometimes embarrassed to admit that one of my hobbies was yoyo-ing.
I remember the fireball, but the one you REALLY wanted was called an X brain. You had a good 15 seconds of spin on that bad boy. I could even do the eiffel tower trick with mine

When I was in my early 20's a friend bought one of those advanced yoyos from Yomega that would sleep for a really long time and started showing off in front of us, so one night I drunkenly ordered a Duncan Raptor and started practicing. I ended up getting really good at it and would string a bunch of tricks together. This video made me remember I still have it so now I'm gonna be practicing tricks like I'm 9 years old again.
I remember getting a Fireball YO-YO in 98 when they were big and even better it was the rare blue color ones which was the same as getting a Charizard card out of your first pack try during that.
Oh snap this brings back so many memories for sure. I also still can't figure out why the hell they became a fad. I remember there were certain colors that were more rare. You were more of a badass if you had certain colors, and people used to try and trade for them. I can't remember for sure which were the rarer better ones, but every time we went to the store I would immediately run to that aisle and look for them. Was always looking for excuses for us to go to the store lol.
