One Year of Fly Lady | My SECRETS to Success with FlyLady

  • After one year of filming Fly Lady, and many years of using the flylady system, here is what I have learned. I tried and failed the flylady cleaning system several times before finally sticking to FlyLady's Baby Steps (Free Baby Steps Tracker Printable: witty-knitter-223.ck.page/80d... ) and truly committing to the system. Honestly, the Baby Steps were the biggest hurdle for me because I did not think it was necessary. The thing that you learn from FlyLady's baby steps is repetition, intentionality, and daily routines. Skipping the FlyLady Baby Steps may get the house clean faster but the lessons you need to keep it tidy for the long run are just not there.
Flylady's Daily Focus also helped me to see the value in planning my work, my menus, and setting myself up for future success. I loved planning before but I see it in a home management tool as well as to help me keep life in balance.
The biggest takeaway to following the FlyLady System for well over a year and filming for one year, is the change that it has made in my confidence. I no longer believe anyone is "just a tidy person". I think some people are not taught how to set up systems for cleaning success. Once the lightbulb goes off, it all gets significantly easier to keep clean!
One other happy accident is connecting with others about the FlyLady and growing true and lasting friendships. While we started out talking about the struggles with FlyLady, we now talk about most anything that is home and family and lifestyle.

If you are struggling with the FlyLady system, I strongly recommend picking up a free Baby Step Tracker at my blog todaywithterrik.com and walking through it. It was so frustrating but it truly changed my life. If you've been doing FlyLady for a while, drop a comment and tell me how long and what YOU have learned! Our experience helps new fly babies feel seen and heard during their struggles!
Have you found a miracle yet? 😆
A special thanks to all of you guys who are praying for us and supporting us during this transition period. I am moved to tears by the love and support I get to see firsthand. How can I be that for you? What do you need?
Praise Report: We just got home from a 3-day work trip for the hubs (nothing fabulous) and I was able to deep dive into designing my new planner! I have been wanting to do this for years and did not think I could ever figure it all out. Praise God, all of the crazy trials that I have faced in making this channel, learning all of the stuff, and personal trials have all combined to give me the drive to push past fear and just do it. I am excited and hopeful that it will be helpful. Please let me know if you are a digital planner. I need beta testers! Please continue to pray for my Mom who is in a season of struggle. Please bring Godly friends into her life.

So happy I came across your channel tonight! I’m 25 years old (no kids yet but I have 3 cats) and my husband and I have been discussing the possibility of me staying at home full-time to take care of the house within the next few years. I fell victim to the “women will rule the world and don’t need men!” ideals from my generation and it was detrimental to my marriage and my mental health. Over the last year I have made strides in relearning (through God) my true purpose in this life and to fully love who God intended me to be as a woman and as a wife. So excited to start learning from you and others and to become the best homemaker for me and my family! ❤️❤️❤️

Just make sure he ALWAYS carries adequate life insurance - my husband passed from cancer and his medical and life insurance lapsed when he was originally diagnosed. I carried it through my employer and had been laid off when that journey started, so there was a huge financial struggle once he died a year later. Trust me, there's not much worse than losing a spouse, but it's so much harder to grieve when you're worried about feeding your kids and keeping a roof over your heads. I would have been in a world of hurt if I'd been a SAHM with no employment history and no life insurance as a buffer.

I am super excited to help! After a traumatic divorce I was raising 2 kids alone. I truly felt like the worst mom and adult ever with my poor homemaking and low self esteem. The FlyLady truly was a blessing to find and over the years it has helped me step into who I really am. I will never be one of "those homemakers" that has it all perfectly together, slow living, and calm because it just is not my nature but I am content with my level of homemaking. My prayer is that I can help you find that as well!

I loved this so much. This may sound like the craziest thing ever, but I clean houses every single day for a living, and I do a really good job. I've done this for 24 years. When I get home the last thing I want to do is clean my house. It's the hardest thing ever to get started, and to think I have to do this all over again even though I want my house to be beautiful. It's not that I don't know how, it's at the motivation when you're tired because you've been cleaning all day is just not there. My house is not crazy awful, but I don't have a system, and I end up cleaning for hours and hours every weekend once it really starts bothering me. I love that you included a prayer at the end. Thank you so much. I'm going to dive deeper into your channel, and see what I can learn.☺️

6:09 I am genuinely snotty crying. I am so glad nobody can see me. You have literally just described the past 17 years of my life. I found the FlyLady back in 2008-09 and wrote everything out all pretty in my FLY journal. Then away it went. And I have tried picking the system up time and time again and ended up dropping it because I have illnesses that cause me to crash and I end up bed bound for weeks on end. I feel like I’m failing as a mother, as a wife, as the woman I truly want to be and just knowing that someone else has felt that too is reassuring to me that it will pass. As I already said in another of your videos, 2024 is my year for consistency. My routine will be up on the fridge for everyone to see and participate. I’m sick and tired of being the only one who takes pride in the appearance of our home when there’s 7 of us living here. Plus pets. Thank you so much and thank you Lord for bringing this beautiful woman and channel into my life just when I needed it.

I felt so isolated, so discarded, and so unworthy of love and it’s crazy that a cleaning routine, a planner, and a desire to find friends has changed my life forever. It’s never perfect, it’s never finished, but I’m different know because I know how to handle it. I’m pouring all of my love into you so that you know it is you that will be the true hero in this story. I’m here absolutely anytime. You don’t have to feel alone.

Oh my goodness...I am overwhelmed with your sweet and wise kind to talk about MY struggle❤. I am 56, married, two adult kids (one at home) and two cats. We are living in a house with garden and unfortunatley I have to go to work for half time, because we need the money for our retirery in 9 years. I tried the FlyLady system so many times and never sticked to it. I read her book 4 times and it sounds so easy. BUT it drives me crazy when my home is cluttered, when I don't know what to cook, when to go shopping and so on. I need a plan. I always thought I can get a plan from others and use it for my situation, but that was wrong. I have to make my own plan. You cannot imagine what your words, your video today makes with me, really❤. I don't have Facebook, but to know there is a group with women who are talking the same speach would be great. I don't have anyone to talk to about my cleaning problems. I don't have a real best friend anyway. Never had it. I stopped looking for it, too. So I will listen to you and learn from you....of course while I tidy up. I thank you thousand times for this video and your prayer🙏❤! Greetings from Germany from Sabrina

I’m not religious (though I’m spiritual, nonetheless!), yet I really think you’re a blessing. Thank you for your transparency, and for being vulnerable by sharing your journey with us on this platform.
I started FlyLady back in July, and while I’m still not there with the decluttering habit or the zone cleaning, it has changed my life already. There are still many days when I feel the resistance building up, and I want to give up and go to bed without finishing my routine; but as you said, thinking forward to what I know these routines are going to save me in terms of stress and overwhelm, that’s usually what gets me back on my feet. Your channel has been a huge part of this success, as well. I love the FlyLady, and I see her lives on RUclips sometimes, but she can be difficult to listen to at times. Your content and experiences that you share, such as the fact that you’re ADHD, are far more relatable to me. :) I’m also ADHD-as well as autistic!
I strongly believe that laziness does not exist. Laziness is a concept that is too charged with negative moral value, and people who are deemed lazy are often shamed, sometimes to literal death. I do believe in challenges with executive function, chronic illness, burnout, limited support systems, and the list could go on. We all need support and encouragement, and we find that through community, art, faith… Which is why I’m glad you brought up the importance of finding community with people who are in a similar place as you, trying to achieve something in common.
Anyway, I’m getting rambly in the comments, now. :) If I would add one more thing, it’s that the most important thing I’ve learned from FlyLady, from reading her book Sink Reflections, is that taking care of your home is an act of love-of SELF LOVE, of all things. And that’s my main takeaway.
Thank you Terri for this wonderful pep talk! 💕

I never start out thinking I am going to get emotional but when I get real I am moved by how grateful I am that I found the FlyLady and God pushed me into doing RUclips. I felt so alone and so low and the small consistency that FlyLady teaches truly changed me. She drives me crazy sometimes but I will always love her for giving me the tools to finally take control over my own chaos. I don't care what plan you chose, I just want to pay it forward and help as many lost souls find their path as I can.
Thank you for rambling with me. You get me and that is the best gift you could give! That is exactly what I needed today. Thank you!

New to your channel! What an amazing video full of heart! ❤️ I have just started with Flylady, and I am so excited.
However, I do get down. When I was sitting in the temple yesterday, (I am a member of the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) I was praying and trying to ask God to have my cleaning not be such a problem anymore, and bring it to the point where I can do it efficiently. And Then go on and serve my family and others better.
He has helped me in the past for my dieting and body image and I am now complete intuitive eater and happy with myself and it is not a stressor anymore. It took years but it was a miracle.
that same thing I know can happen for the cleaning. God builds us one step at a time into a new creature through our savior! Thank you so much for the steps, and I love your personality!

Like you, I tried so much in so little time and ending up being overwhelmed.
This time I decided to go one step at the time without going too fast.
Month ago I had a surgery and my house is a mess. It was one before- a war zone. Now it's a nuclear disaster.
I can't do much because of my 26 time stitched belly, but i will try.
I was struggeling before because of my lack of will and self love.
I lost my morher, father, grandmother and an uncle in 2 years.
I am depressed and in a downward spiral.
    This video had me sobbing.
It was as if I was talking about myself...
My mother was a hardworking woman and I feel like I'm letting her down every day. My kids are happy, cause they don't know any better.
    ...and I'm sobbing again...
Thank you for this wakeup call.
I will get up now and shine my sink.
All the love from a little country in Europe called Croatia! Your voice came a long way! ❤️
P.S. you reminding me of my late mother is a bonus. ☺️

@TodaywithTerriK I've watched several of your videos on Fly Lady. I am working on customizing my own schedule because my family has a very strange system. We work and do homeschool on Friday thru Monday (and church on Sunday.) Our "weekend" is Tuesday thru Thursday, but we must do errands and sometimes some schoolwork, along with doing some fun things. It's an unorthodox schedule so my cleaning routine must fit me specifically. I've decluttered a lot, pretty much down to my clutter threshold now. Just struggling with the daily routine needed to keep a 5000 sq ft home clean when me, my 2 sons, and 3 dogs are always home and doing stuff. PLUS my husband works NIGHTS so he sleeps during the day. That really puts a kink in my daily routine! 😳 But I am working on getting the steps down in my own special way! Already, my husband has noticed an improvement! Certain areas are starting to make me smile. We moved into this house 2 years ago, and I think I just haven't gotten the hang of it yet. On the plus side, my husband and I are both "crickets" so we have harmony in how we organize stuff, except that his clutter threshold is higher than mine! He wants to keep too much, but it's a small thing since he keeps his stuff out of my way. It's getting better though, everyday! Thanks for making your videos! I am learning a lot! I appreciate your prayers at the end of each video! We certainly need the Lord to manage all that we do! God bless you!

I just listened to this again while getting started c on my zone Cleaning for the day. I know I've said before I am not a Fly Lady (or baby lol). I found another system that I used for a foundation to start on. And, I found the Clutter Bug for a foundation to learn how to start organising my home for me and my organisational style.
That being said, I have come to discover that I have had to adjust my cleaning routine many times to fit my home, my household's needs, and my own physical and mental capacity. I am still a work in progress. However, every bit of insight you give in this video, rings so true. I DO get dressed from head to socks (we don't wear shoes in our house) every morning, no matter what...no matter what time I get up, how I feel, or what. That means, that no matter what happens after that, I'm dressed for it lol. I don't have to worry about opening my door for any reason and have people drive by the house and see me in my pj's lol. Showing up imperfectly for my cleaning and other daily things is still showing up. And yes, even if 6 months or a year goes by and your house still has a long way to go, if you've been showing up every day and doing a little bit each day, you DO see big progress over time. I am now proud of my kitchen. It is now organised about 99% the way I want it. Even though I still have alot of things that I use on the counter (they have to be for me), they are logical, neatly arranged, and my counter space is compartalised. I have my beverage station, my washing station (sink, dishwasher. Etc), prep station and cooking/serving station. And for each station, the contents of the cabinets and drawers are associated with the purpose of that station. And I actually was able to create just enough space on my counters to actually work on. Getting rid of my microwave and a big multi function oven and replacing them with a multi function pressure cooker really created more space and eliminated tge need for alot of extra cooking appliances. Also, I discovered (finally in mid-life lol), that being left-handed means that I can't look at other people's kitchens and think that I need to arrange things the way they do in order to have things neat and organised. Nope. Most people arrange their things dor a nightie, because chances are, no one in their house is a lefty. But when it finally clicked in my brain that I am the boss of my kitchen and that I needed my kitchen to be functional for me and my scattered brain, I started arranging it for a lefty. And all of a sudden, not only does my kitchen stay tidy and organised, but I'm not scatter-brained or stressed out when I'm trying to cook, feed the animals, and clean up while I cook. And I'm less mssy and clumsy when I do prep work or cooking lol. After about the first week working in there the way It's set up now, I said to my husband, "So THIS is what normal feel like when you're cooking?" 😂
Anyway, I just rambled lol. My point is, all of your bits of advice are so true, no matter what cleaning and organising methods people are using. They apply to ANYONE who struggles with maintaining a clean and tidy home. And, sometimes, we need to hear a little hard truth. But it's better to be hit with a hard truth than kissed with a soothing lie. And when a hard truth is given in love and with a humble heart, it makes the truth so much easier to swallow. You do just that. You encourage me just as much now as you did when I started out about...ohmygosh; is it 1 year or 2 now? I can't remember how long ago I started out lol.

@@TodaywithTerriK yes! And, I just signed on to Fly Lady's free app! Well I’ve just kept it very simple, and adapted Fly Lady’s Zones to my needs.
    December 2023
    Zone 1: room A, room B, room C (1st to 6th December)
    Zone 2: room D, room E (7th to 12th December)
    Zone 3: room F, room G (13th to 18th December)
    Zone 4: room H, room I (19th to 24th December)
    Zone 5: room J, room K (25th to 30th December).
I’ve decided which rooms are allocated to a zone, and they stay in that zone, so every month the same rooms are tackled on the same days. If I want to take days off, I do, and if I want to do extra on a given day, I can. The only rule that I stick to is that I have to work on the appropriate Zone/set of rooms for today’s date, whatever that happens to be.
I already had a morning/evening routine for everyday tasks, so I don’t really bother with the other stuff on the Fly Lady website.

However, I am still trying to tweak Zone 2 cleaning the kitchen. It's just so much to do in the kitchen. I am thinking about assigning a day to it also. Not sure how I will do this. Thanks for watching! The kitchen is a beast and I usually end up doing a big "Push Day" which is how I phrase taking my 1st day Zone Cleaning and doing the worst things first. Usually that means I zone clean 30-60 min that day which helps knock a few big jobs out. Then if I don't get as much done the other days they are not the big tasks that I really needed to hit. You could also break up a few jobs to be done during a daily 15-minute declutter--sometimes I do the fridge quick clean out then so that it doesn't get so nasty. Maybe make a list of tasks that you never get to and include them on Anti-Procrastination Day?

I assign Tuesday to kitchen...it does make a huge difference if you have children. It needs daily dishes and basics, weekly solid clean, and a monthly project clean. The kitchen is the hardest working room in your house, plus everyone is not as orderly or clean as you...thus more messes.

I hate that you are in pain and struggling. Starting today try this. 1. No new messes. That means you wash any dishes you mess up and put them away. 2. Keep trash in the trash can and don’t let it lay around. 3. Anytime you get up, take 2 min to tidy the area your in if you can-it’s fine to sit to do this. You will not see immediate results but by the end of the week you could have the area around your chair tidy, the sink clean, and no new messes to deal with. Don’t focus on all that is wrong. Really just live 2 min at a time, look at the progress you can make in 2 minutes. Don’t try to get up and down. Deal with trash and things you can get rid of first. That will help I think. Really work on your mindset. 1% better every day. A win can be just a clean sink or seeing the top of an end table. I’m here to chat anytime!

I think you are right about the importance of following her baby steps. However I strongly disagree that all HER baby steps must be followed. I think the MOST important thing is BABY STEPS periodt! What I mean is the principle of baby steps is of the utmost importance and critical and the TRUST in it. I will say that 2 or 3 of the baby steps are a good anchor point starting point that will lay the foundation are SHINY SINK/ DISHES. Checking the website is useless to me and total waste of time. Dressing and looking nice and ready for the day, am & pm routines. Those are critical. There are many other baby steps of hers that can be helpful to some but useless and unecessary to others. Her system is amazing but you can customize and choose what is needed and throw out what you dont need.

Baby steps = 1-2 small habits. And being consistent and slowly building upon that foundation. BABY STEPS = HABITS. Habits are the building blocks of success or failure. Good habits will help you get what you want out of life.

      @TodaywithTerriK  6 месяцев назад +2

I agree. I think baby steps in general are critical to no getting overwhelmed and setting up good routines. I also feel several of the steps could be combined. For example: a physical routine + a mental habit so that everyday works on building the cleaning routine and the mental process to stick to it. I keep thinking I should make up my own or something. Ha ha, the TK Way.

You are seriously crushing it! Way to go. Paperwork can easily build up. I now have mine under control but my husband's office is total chaos. I can only lead by example there...and close his door.
