  • There are many nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for pelvic organ prolapse. No woman ever has to have surgery, but it is important if you want surgery to understand all options. Colpocleisis is a surgery in which the vaginal canal is closed as a way to provide support to prolapsing organs. Colpocleisis is one of the safest surgeries for POP, and is an option that mature women may want to explore if they are no longer engaging in vaginal sex.

Never heard of this before. I wonder.... the implications... sound scary... though a possible solution.

The colpocleisis option is one typically offered to women 70 and up, and is likely the safest surgical repair with the highest success rate and fastest heal curve. I know many women who've had this procedure who are thrilled with the result. While it means no more intercourse, it does not mean the end of intimacy, since there are other ways of being close to your partner. There is a little more info on APOPS website, or you can google colpocleisis to learn more.
